FREE MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: THE ORIGIN 5: CHAR & SAYLA PDF Yoshikazu Yasuhiko,Hajime Yatate,Yoshiyuki Tomin | 474 pages | 27 Mar 2014 | Vertical Inc. | 9781939130198 | English | New York, United States Mobile Suit Gundam: THE ORIGIN, Volume 5: Char & Sayla by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko Following the international success of Gundam: The Origin's manga, a 4-episode movie adaptation was announced into coincide with the Gundam franchise's 35th anniversary. The result is a detailed origin story focusing on the primary antagonist Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin 5: Char & Sayla the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Char Aznable. Addressing the events leading up to the One Year War in from Char and his sister Sayla's perspectives, it takes a humanistic, character-driven approach to Gundam's mecha-heavy tale. This movie collection has been brought to life by a star-studded production team any Gundam fan will recognize. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, the character designer and writer of the Origin manga—not to mention the original character designer of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin 5: Char & Sayla show—provides the screenplay adapted from his bestselling manga. Kunio Okawara, who produced the mechanical designs for nearly every Gundam show from the original to Zeta Gundam to Gundam Unicorn, reprises his role as the mechanical designer. While the combined staff has a lot of experience with mecha, it's Yasuhiko's character designs that steal the show. Yasuhiko has retained most elements of his designs for the original show, meaning the Origin's characters have a delightfully vintage feel while taking advantage of modern production values. It's delightful to recognize so many familiar faces: Char and Sayla as children, Ramba Ral as a much younger man, the Zabi family rendered with a full range of emotional expressions. -
The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise
The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise: a Case Study of Transmedia Storytelling Practices and the Role of Digital Games in Japan Akinori (Aki) Nakamura College of Image Arts and Sciences, Ritsumeikan University 56-1 Toji-in Kitamachi, Kita-ku, Kyoto 603-8577 [email protected] Susana Tosca Department of Arts and Communication, Roskilde University Universitetsvej 1, P.O. Box 260 DK-4000 Roskildess line 1 [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study looks at the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and the role of digital games from the conceptual frameworks of transmedia storytelling and the Japanese media mix. We offer a historical account of the development of “the Mobile Suit Gundam” series from a producer´s perspective and show how a combination of convergent and divergent strategies contributed to the success of the series, with a special focus on games. Our case can show some insight into underdeveloped aspects of the theory of transmedial storytelling and the Japanese media mix. Keywords Transmedia Storytelling, Media mix, Intellectual Property, Business Strategy INTRODUCTION The idea of transmediality is now more relevant than ever in the context of media production. Strong recognizable IPs take for example more and more space in the movie box office, and even the Producers Guild of America ratified a new title “transmedia producer” in 2010 1. This trend is by no means unique to the movie industry, as we also detect similar patterns in other media like television, documentaries, comics, games, publishing, music, journalism or sports, in diverse national and transnational contexts (Freeman & Gambarato, 2018). However, transmedia strategies do not always manage to successfully engage their intended audiences; as the problematic reception of a number of works can demonstrate. -

Haruhi in Usa: a Case Study of a Japanese Anime in the United States
HARUHI IN USA: A CASE STUDY OF A JAPANESE ANIME IN THE UNITED STATES A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Ryotaro Mihara August 2009 © 2009 Ryotaro Mihara ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Although it has been more than a decade since Japanese anime became a popular topic of conversation when discussing Japan, both within the United States and in other countries as well, few studies have empirically investigated how, and by whom, anime has been treated and consumed outside of Japan. This research thus tries to provide one possible answer to the following set of questions: What is the empirical transnationality of anime? How and by whom is anime made transnational? How is anime transnationally localized/consumed? In order to answer the questions, I investigated the trans-pacific licensing, localizing, and consuming process of the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi) from Japan to the United States by conducting fieldwork in the United States’ agencies which localized Haruhi as well as U.S. anime and Haruhi fans. The central focus of this research is the ethnography of agencies surrounding Haruhi in the United States and Japan. I assume that these agencies form a community with a distinctive culture and principles of behaviors and practices in the handling of the Haruhi anime texts. The research findings to the above questions could be briefly summarized as follows. The worldview, characters, and settings of Haruhi (i.e. a fictious world of Haruhi which is embodied and described through its anime episodes and other related products) “reduces” and “diffuses” as it is transferred on the official business track from the producers in Japan to the localizers in the United States (i.e. -

Moore iii THESIS ABSTRACT John D. Moore Master of Arts Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures September 2017 Title: Inside the Boy Inside the Robot: Mobile Suit Gundam and Interiority Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) is an iconic series in the genre of television anime featuring giant fighting robots, embedded in a system of conventions developed across decades of media aimed at boys that emphasizes action and combat. In this thesis, I argue that Gundam foregrounds the interiority of its main character Amuro, challenging conventions governing the boy protagonist. Using Peter Verstraten's principles of film narratology and Thomas Lamarre’s theory of limited animation, I find in Gundam's narrative strategies sophisticated techniques developed to portray his inner life.
