His gift is eventually augmented by public funding. 1886 David and Louse Boren Denny donate land for the civic hall. 1927 A public bond passes and construction begins on Civic Auditorium. Civic Field opens. 1928 Mayor Bertha K. Landis dedicates the Civic Center Complex. 1939 Washington National Guard Armory is dedicated. 1947 High School Memorial Stadium opens. 1948 Un-American Activities hearings on alleged communist acts take place in the Armory. 1951 Memorial Wall honoring Seattle high school students killed in WW II is dedicated. 1954 City Council member Al Rochester proposes the idea that Seattle host a world’s fair to mark the 50th anniversary of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909. 1956 World's Fair Commission votes unanimously to coordinate the World' Fair program with the city effort to develop a civic center at and around the Civic Auditorium. Seattle voters approve a $7.5 million bond issue for building and land acquisition in the vicinity of Civic Auditorium. 1957 World’s Fair Commission receives authorization from Washington Governor Albert Rosellini to hold a fair in Seattle in 1960, and Washington State Legislature approves $7.5 million in funding for the World's Fair. Swedish Pop Mafia: How a culturally conservative effort in the 1940s backfired to create the greatest engine of pop music in the world BY WHET MOSER • March 24, 2014 • At some point over the last 15 years—sometime, say, between the 1999 release of “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys and last year’s “Roar” by Katy Perry—it became an inescapable fact that if you want to understand American pop music, you pretty much have to understand Sweden. Songwriters and producers from Stockholm have buttressed the careers of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Usher, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Pitbull, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, and any number of other artists you’ve probably listened to while dancing, shopping, making out, or waiting on hold over the past decade. (And it’s not just American pop music that has Scandinavian fingerprints all over it: When Azerbaijan won the Eurovision contest in a 2011 upset, they did it with a song written for them by two Swedes.) If Americans are aware of this phenomenon, it is probably because they’ve heard about the legendary Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin. There are any number of ways to express Martin’s ubiquity, but here’s one: From 2010 to 2011, the pop idol Katy Perry spent an unprecedented 69 consecutive weeks in the Billboard top 10, surpassing the previous record-holder, the 1990s Swedish group Ace of Base, by four months. But the milestone was far more of a testament to Martin’s staying power than Perry’s: Not only did he help produce and write all but one of Perry’s record- breaking string of hits, but he began his career as a producer for Ace of Base. -

2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time. -
