This is pre-revolution France, as the big French Revolution started in 1789. France was, however, facing large tensions between the bourgeoisie (wealthy) and the proletariat (poor). We can assume the king of all France during this time is Louis XV, a highly unpopular king due to his affairs, losing the territory of Canada during the Seven Years’ War, and just being overall a weak king. -

She is admirable from the first for her loyalty to her eccentric father, her love of reading (even though it brands her as “different”), and her refusal to accept a proposal of marriage from an arrogant and boastful nobleman. Over the course of the play, she learns that love sometimes comes from the least likely and least romantic of sources, that the surface is not the whole truth, and that home is where the heart is. Her Beast learns that love cannot be forced, that love means freeing, not caging, your beloved, and that true power comes from giving it away. These two are surrounded by an entertaining collection of characters—some comic, some caring, some evil, some beastly, some silly—who add spice to the central story and help underscore the overall message about the unselfish generosity of love. Welcome to the heartwarming world of this wonderful tale! On Your Way to the Theatre… Beauty and the Beast is a story with which many, or even all, students are likely to be familiar, especially in the Disney animated film version, which is the basis for the WFT production. The idea of a beautiful woman falling in love with a man whom is hideous, or whom she is not allowed to look upon has stubbornly persisted into the twenty-first century, especially since Disney turned the story into an animated feature film in 1991. Both Beauty and the Beast take different forms in different cultures and evolve even more when the classic tales are compared to modern retellings. -

1 Beauty and Beastliness: Intertextuality, genre mutation, and utopian possibilities in paranormal romance Iona and Peter Opie claim that ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is ‘The most symbolic of the fairy tales after Cinderella, and the most intellectually satisfying’.1 It has spawned so many variants that they almost constitute a genre in itself. It’s a subset of what folklorists consider a specific type, of Animal-Bridegroom stories (there are also related Animal-Bride tales).2 The ur-text is that of Madame de Villeneuve’s epically digressive 1740 version (though a more general architext is Apuleius’ ‘Cupid and Psyche’ story, embedded in The Golden Ass).3 This was followed in 1756 by Madame de Beaumont’s much-condensed version, which has been the principle model for translations into English.4 Perhaps the tale lends itself more easily to allegory than most, with the polarised qualities of hero and heroine; the heroine’s abstract name, the hero’s name also standing in for a type; and also the presence of Apuleius’ fable of desire and the soul behind it. There are hundreds of variations, adaptations, and reworkings of the basic story alone.5 But the theme of human and monstrous lovers also lies behind the recently emerged genre of paranormal romance (most familiar through Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling Twilight (2005)). And there are thousands of paranormal romances, where the underlying structure of the folktale takes the narrative form and mood of romantic fiction. This is also modulated by other genres—principally Gothic—and enriched by a different (or perhaps parallel) tradition that takes Milton’s Satan, recast as Samuel Richardson’s Lovelace in Clarissa, and, encountering Lord Byron on the way, works through the Brontës and Daphne du Maurier. -

University of Iceland School of Humanities Department of English Tale as Old as Time Disenchanting the Beast B.A. Essay Karitas Marý Bjarnadóttir Kt.: 060297-2589 Leiðbeinandi: Dr. Jessica Murphy May 2020 ABSTRACT Representations of the beastly bridegroom have become entangled with their respective brides and female sexual desires. Modern stories of human brides and their animal grooms tend to favour the latter. This essay applies a feminist approach when exploring the evolution of the animal groom within the Beauty and Beast motif. It examines different representations of beastly grooms and brides and varying interpretations of female and male narrators and illustrators. The bear as the Beast is a common figure and evolving views towards the bear as a Beast over the centuries are explored. This essay discusses two exemplar stories for the Beauty and Beast motif, Apuleius’ “Cupid and Psyche” and Madame Leprince de Beaumont’s “Beauty and the Beast.” Comparisons are made between the two aforementioned works, as well as Disney’s 1991 and 2017 adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, the Nordic tale “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” and other works. This essay examines how and why the Beast’s character has transformed from a self-deprecating, gentlemanly creature to a complacent narcissist. In earlier versions the Beast is considered to be the other and a supporting character to a young girl’s maturation into womanhood. However, modern retellings have starred the Beast as the main protagonist. This essay explores these trends and their plausible causes by reflecting on the history of the animal bridegroom motif and the culture and time in which it was written. -
