Undermain Theatre presents The Black Monk April 4 –May 2, 2009

Undermain Theatre is pleased to announce its next show, The Black Monk by David Rabe, based on an Anton Chekhov story, will be performed April 4 –May 2, 2009 at Undermain’s Dallas location in historic Deep Ellum. Katherine Owens will direct.

David Rabe brings Anton Chekov’s spiritual mystery to vivid life. Tony and Obie award winning writer David Rabe is the author of such classic American contemporary plays as Stick and Bones, Hurlyburly, Streamers, In the Boom Boom Room and more. He’s also written screenplays for films such as I’m Dancing as fast as I can, The Firm and Casualties of War. Un- dermain returns to Rabe’s work after the acclaimed produc- tions of Rabe’s play Goose and Tom Tom, which Rabe at- tended in 1991. Kovrin, a young scholar exhausted to the point of madness by his studies decides to visit his childhood friend Tanya on her father's garden estate. The two fall in love and plan to marry. Kovrin tells Tanya the legend of the black monk whose image has been reflected in mirages for a thousand years and who will soon return in the flesh. One day in the garden, the black monk appears to the young man and holds the key to either enlightenment or total devastation. The cast for The Black Monk is: Garrett Schenck as Yegor Se- myonitch Pesotsky; Jonathan Brooks as Andrei Vasilich Kov- rin; Shannon Kearns-Simmons as Tanya; Newton Pittman as The Black Monk; Stefanie Tovar as Nadia; Richard Rollin as Orlov; Maryam Baig as Varvara Nikolaevna; Mikhail is to be announced; Parker Hornsby as Yakov; Ryan Lescalleet as ensemble. Musicians will be Ariana Cook and Reynaldo Patiño. Undermain Theatre performances are Wednesdays-Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Fridays-Saturdays at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are Thurs $15, Fri $20, and Sat $25. Undermain is located at 3200 Main Street at Murray Street in Deep Ellum. Discounts are available for seniors, students and KERA members. Call 214.747.5515 or visit www.undermain.org. “The late 19th-century storyteller and the contemporary playwright become one. The graceful flow from one to the other, and from the page to the stage, is remarkable. Mr. Rabe has heightened theatrical possibilities by extending descriptive passages into dramatic scenes that catch fire…The Black Monk is a heady event... Don't miss it.” -Alvin Klein, The New York Times

We are in the process of making our final selections and putting together the festival roster and schedule. This year is by far the most diversity we have had in our applicants both in discipline and distance.

Beginning on World Theatre Day (March 27th) and going through April 25th, 2009 the Dallas Hub Theater will be the Hub of performances, workshops, talk-backs and other exciting activi- ties featuring groups on the fringe in areas of theatre, dance, music, film, spoken word, comedy, and a few that have invented their own.

Many artists, groups and shows have experienced success, exposure and noteriety by being part of our previous three festivals. On a local level, the festival is a great way get new and fringy projects in front of new audiences. It is an ideal place to celebrate the wonderful arts in the Dallas, Fort Worth metroplex. The DFW Fringe Awards have proven an excellent bonus for the artists and groups that earn them as they take their projects around the world or to the next level.

BOX OFFICE AWARDS: One of the toughest challenges artists face is convincing producers, investors, venues that their idea is "bankable". Fringe Awards are given to the top three gross- ing box office groups.

AUDIENCE AWARDS: Most everybody involved in the arts understands it is not all about money, and some shows have higher priced tickets, but maybe not the highest audience atten- dance and feedback. Awards are presented to the three highest attended shows and presenta- tions.

PRODUCER PICKS: Every participant in the Fringe is invited to see all the shows for free, and vote on their favorite show or artist (other than their own). The top three receive the awards.

The Texas Voices, Collin County’s first professional chamber chorus, concludes its sixth season of public concerts with Old Music from the New World on May 17, 2009

Deeply rooted in the music of their homeland, our nation’s early immigrants brought their musical heritage with them as they forged new lives in the New World. Many American folk songs were inspired by these European and African traditions. This concert includes beloved folk songs such as Steven Sametz’s Shenandoah and Kirke Mechem’s Dan-u-el. And what folk-song celebration would be complete without a rousing rendition of David DaVenney’s The Drunken Sailor?

The 22-member chorus, directed by Alan Dyer, will perform Sunday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Royal Lane Baptist Church, 6707 Royal Lane, in Dallas. Tickets are $22 regular, $15 for seniors (65+), and $10 for students and may be purchased online at www.thetexasvoices.org, at the door, or at 214-384-6336.

2008–2009 Concert Schedule Old Music from the New World Saturday, May 17, 2009, 6:30 p.m. Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway, Mesquite

The Living Opera Commissioned Opera Completed World Premier in the 2009 Summer Season

In honor of Texas Independence Day, The Living Opera is proud to announce the completion of a commissioned opera based on the events that won that independ- ence, "The Legend of the Yellow Rose of Texas" which will receive a World Pre- mier in July. The cornerstone of The Living Opera's 2009 Myths & Legends Sea- son, "The Legend of the Yellow Rose of Texas" will open in the Countrywide Thea- ter at the Eisemann Center, Richardson Texas, on July 17, 2009 with subsequent performances on the19th, 25th, and 30th.

Pulitzer Prize nominee, Gregory Sullivan Isaacs, a Dallas resident and Music Di- rector of The Living Opera, has composed a score with a libretto by Jeffry Haddow, a New York based playwright. Haddow, best know for his Broadway-produced play "Chekhov at Yalta," has written numerous books, plays, and articles for major publications.

"The story of the Yellow Rose is an intriguing highlight in all of the histories of the decisive battle at San Jacinto" offers The Living Opera's Executive Artistic Director Adam Adolfo. "The facts of the aggressive move by the Texans against a Mexican army still in their tents are beyond question, but the truth of what happened in Gen- eral Santa Anna's tent that early morning and his rumored tryst with a young woman have faded into time and is now the stuff of legend" he added.

"There are a number of books that come to different conclusions about who the woman was and how she got there. From my research, I constructed one possible version of the story." Haddow commented. "That said, al- most all of the characters in the libretto are based on real people and the plot revolves around real historical events."

"A 'sneak peak', presented at the Park Cities Rotary and again at Neiman Marcus for their Armani & Opera Event, was most gratifying" said Adolfo. "The response was overwhelming, especially for a new unheard work. The audience loved the selections and all said they were eager to hear more."

However, the audience response was no surprise to Mr. Adolfo. "Isaacs has composed a lyrical and dramatic score, full of soaring melodies," he said. "Isaacs also incorporated a number of Mexican folk songs and other tunes popular at the time so the opera has a rich authentic and ethnic quality."

"It is my most romantic score", Isaacs said "but the subject matter seemed to demand it." "I used dance forms that were all the rage when these events took place; such as the waltz, polka, and tango. I had the advantage of having the cast close by and always willing to sing through passages as they were written. Their input was very helpful. "

Leading the cast is soprano Jacquelyn Langfelder as Emily de Zavala, with Bass Brandon Gibson as her hus- band, Vice President of the Republic of Texas, Lorenzo de Zavala. Baritone Blake Davidson takes the stage as the dashing General Santa Anna with Brooke Clark Gibson, mezzo, playing the servant Rosa. Tenor Elias Hendricks après as Joe (a freed slave and singular survivor of the Battle at the Alamo), and Billy Lawley por- trays Colonel Jason Briggs. Adam Adolfo directs with the composer conducting.

The design team includes sets by Clare Floyd DeVries, costumes by Maggie Baker, and Lighting by Carolyn Lloyd.

"To the best of our knowledge, the story of the Yellow Rose legend has never been treated dramatically, "said Haddow. 29 Return to Index Page

The 2008-2009 Robert T. Anderson Recital Series

The Dallas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is pleased to continue its tradition of bringing the very finest national and international artists to Dallas with this season’s Robert T. Anderson Recital Series. Four outstanding concerts are included in this exciting 2008-2009 Series. Each event is presented in a different venue, featuring outstanding instruments designed to showcase performers to their best advantage. Of note are this season’s opening events in October highlighting the American Guild of Organists “Inter-national Year of the Organ,” a year devoted to recognizing the historic and evolving roles of the organ as well as to entertain, inform, and engage new audiences for organ music. The series is named in honor of Dr. Robert T. Anderson, long-time resident of Dallas and former chairman of the organ department at Southern Methodist University. Dr. Anderson was very influential in furthering interest in and ap- preciation for organ performance. The series is a self-supporting entity and relies on tax-de-ductible contributions for its continuation. Ticket sales only cover a fraction of the costs. We eagerly look for friends who appreciate organ music to help underwrite this recital series. For further information on making a tax-deductible contri-bution or about the Series, contact Michael Shake, RTA Series coordinator at 214-525-4229 or [email protected].

The Living Opera Celebrates it’s 5th Anniversary with a season of MYTHS and LEGENDS

The Living Opera in its continuing mission to bring to the North Texas community the highest quality in opera that is both imaginative and theatrical is proud to announce the company's 2009 5th Anniversary Season celebrating MYTHS & LEGENDS.

The new season - programmed by Executive Director Adam Adolfo and Conductor Gregory Sullivan Isaacs - is an ambitious collection of works for the opera theatre and include a beloved classic, a family fairy tale, and a world premier! "Our goal," says Adolfo "was to collect Myths & Legends from the four corners of the Earth to celebrate music and capture the imagination."

In addition to its season repertoire, The Living Opera is proud to announce that it is converting to a repertory festi- val format, condensing its entire season into a three-week period in the late summer. "What we recognized," offers Adolfo, "was there was time where very little was happening musically, and our audiences were starving for more options. The season schedule is not that different then how other companies are producing. This allows a great opportunity to see multiple productions in a single weekend."

What is Cooperative Arts News?

The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list members with news of member organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest.

The Rules: 1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager. 2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list.

If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely manner.

As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area!
