Following the delivery of a number of pilots the plan is to develop the software as a tool and creative process that anyone can use to record tangible and intangible natural and cultural heritage knowledge and to record the special significance of this knowledge as determined by the traditional owners. -

This case was written by Saleem H. Ali for the purpose of entering the 2000 Aboriginal Management Case Writing Competition. TITLE: Cameco Corporation: Uranium Mining and Aboriginal Development in Saskatchewan[1] The Setting The topic of Bernard Michel's speech was general in nature, yet quite specific in substance: "Corporate Citizenship and the Saskatchewan Uranium Industry." He had been invited by the Uranium Institute in London, UK to share his company's experiences in negotiating agreements with Native communities in Northern Saskatchewan. As the President and Chief Executive Officer of Cameco, the world's largest uranium mining company, his speech was much anticipated by the audience. The Uranium mines of Saskatchewan are an interesting laboratory for the study of corporate community relations......The community relations programme's first action was to listen through public hearings to the communities' expressed concerns.......Today 80% of Saskatchewan's residents, compared with 65% in 1990, support continued uranium mining. This reflects the industry's community relations initiative. Cameco's shares also trade at 3.5 times their 1991 issue price. Only a small segment of anti-nuclear activists takes a negative view. Relationships with local communities, like uranium ore, are a valuable resource needing competent development.[2] Originally from France, and a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, Michel, had spent the past two decades in Canada working for various mining interests. Having served as Senior Vice President, Executive Vice President and President for a subsidiary of the French nuclear conglomerate Cogema, Amok Ltd, Michel had eminent credentials to join Cameco in 1988. -

OPIKINAWASOWIN: THE LIFE LONG PROCESS OF GROWING CREE AND METIS CHILDREN By LEAH MARIE DORION Integrated Studies Project submitted to Dr. Winona Wheeler in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts – Integrated Studies Athabasca, Alberta September 30, 2010 ABSTRACT This research project explores Cree and Metis Elders teachings about traditional child rearing and investigates how storytelling is used to facilitate the transfer of this culturally based knowledge. This project examines the concept of Opikinawasowin which contains the Cree philosophical framework for growing children. Opikinawasowin, translates into English as the „child rearing way‟ and is a highly valued aspect of traditional Cree life. For generations Cree and Metis people used storytelling to actualize the teachings of Opikinawasowin. The concept of Opikinawasowin in this study is defined and expressed through Cree and Metis Elders points of view and by the sharing of traditional teachings. Storytelling is used by Elders to impart core values and beliefs about parenting. Through stories Elders give specific teachings relating to how individuals, families, and communities are expected to practice traditional child rearing. Additionally, Opikinawasowin knowledge is often transmitted through the cultural context of prayer and ceremony so asking Elders about the spiritual foundation of Opikinawasowin is an important aspect within this research. This study documents thirteen traditional parenting teachings and identifies fifty four recommendations for further discussion regarding the revival of traditional parenting teachings and practices in our contemporary families and communities. Some issues raised in this study include the need to restore male and female balance in our families, communities, and nation so that our children will have this balance role modeled for them because it is an original feature of traditional society. -

Chair’s foreword The Australian film and television industry plays an important role in telling the stories that help to foster our cultural identity and also makes a significant economic contribution to the nation. There are however significant technological changes and other issues impacting on its future growth and sustainability. On-demand platforms such as Amazon and Netflix have transformed the way Australians access their screen content. Cinema and television are no longer as dominant due to this audience disruption although they remain an important part of this industry. This inquiry was a timely examination of the policy settings that underpin our domestic screen industry including tax incentives and Australian content quotas. Direct funding by Screen Australia, international co-production treaties, and the foreign actor certification scheme were also reviewed. The committee has made 13 recommendations to government to help secure the future growth and sustainability of Australia’s screen industry. Tax offsets The current tax incentives for film and television were devised 10 years ago and include the producer, location and post, digital and visual effects (PDV) offsets. -

Gibson III, Department of English Dr. Chris Keirstead, Department of English Dr. Rupali Mishra, Department of History Abstract The intersection of postcolonialism and historiographic metafiction can be seen in novels written over the last several decades by British and Antipodean authors concerning the British colonial era in Australia and its aftermath. Novels from this sub-group of writers of historiographic metafiction fit both Linda Hutcheon’s description of historiographic metafiction and some of the concerns of postcolonial writers and theorists, as they revisit the colonial era and critique or reassess the historiographic writings that helped galvanize pro-colonial perspectives and marginalize and dehumanize the Indigenous communities there. While there is much scholarship on historiographic metafiction and postcolonialism, this volume focuses on the specific nexus of those two concepts and its coalescence in contemporary Australian novels of the colonial and postcolonial experience. The novels covered in this volume—by Peter Carey, Matthew Kneale, Rachel Leary, Richard Flanagan, and Alexis Wright—share an interest in 19th Century Australia, the violence and injustice that were an inescapable part of the foundation of the country during that period, and the potential dubiousness of historical documentation. -
