    SURPRISINGLY UNEXPECTED: MOOSE JAW, METRONORMATIVITY AND LGBTQ ACTIVISM JOSEPH WICKENHAUSER A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO DECEMBER 2012 © JOSEPH WICKENHAUSER, 2012 ABSTRACT Through an attention to the experiences of middle-aged and older gay men living in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, this work explores how “metronormative” discourses of rural-urban gay migrations obscure the experiences of those living outside metropolitan centres. Using archival and ethnographic methods, this study critically reflects on metronormativity in the lesbian and gay archive and attempts to de-centre visibility from conceptions of LGBTQ activism through a focus on what I call “audibility tactics.” These tactics, deployed by LGBTQ activists in Moose Jaw from 1978 – 2012, minimize the individual and public declaration of sexual orientation while resisting homophobia and heterosexism. This study also identifies the scalar flexibility of metronormativity in LGBTQ lives and activism while tracing the complex migrations of middle-aged and older gay men. Finally, this work discusses the way space is not only sexualized but also “aged” and the role this plays in these men’s disidentifications with metronormativity. ii D E D I C A T I O N This work is dedicated to the generous people and unexpected places where I have found home. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis was researched, written and published on unceded native lands.     IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dec. 5, 2014 Education NEW K-12 SCHOOL BREAKING GROUND IN LANGENBURG Today Melville-Saltcoats MLA Bob Bjornerud, on behalf of Education Minister Don Morgan, joined students, dignitaries and representatives from the Good Spirit School Division to celebrate the start of construction on the brand new school in Langenburg. The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $23 million toward this project. “This new school will offer a modern learning environment for students in the growing community of Langenburg,” Bjornerud said. “The success of each and every Saskatchewan student is a high priority for our government, and we know that building schools and investing in education will positively impact the future of all students and early learners.” Designed with an innovative approach, the new school will be equipped with room for almost 400 students ranging from Pre- Kindergarten to Grade 12 and will feature open concept learning spaces allowing for more natural light, a large gymnasium and multi-purpose room that are connected to a large stage, a fitness room, practical and applied arts spaces and a science lab. “Any type of major construction in a community is a welcome addition but, sincerely, there can’t be anything more exciting than building an entirely new school from scratch,” Good Spirit School Division Board Chair Lois Smandych said. “If you close your eyes and imagine what will be standing here in less than two years, you can practically see and feel the profound difference this will have for our students.” Students Alanna Decorby and Breanna Popp represented the Langenburg High School student body as well as the graduating class of 2017, the first class that will graduate from the new school.

    Canadian eview V olume 39, No. 3 th 200 Anniversary of the Ontario Legislative Library p. 28 2 CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARY REVIEW/FALL 2016 Manitoba’s original Mace was carved out of the hub of a Red River cart wheel by a soldier with the Wolseley Expedition Force (sent out to deal with the Riel Rebellion in 1869). This Mace was used for a period of 13 years between March 15, 1871 and March 12, 1884. In December 1873, when a fire destroyed the first home of the Legislature, the Mace was the only object to survive the flames. It remains on display in the Speaker’s office to this day. Manitoba’s current gold-plated Mace debuted in 1884. Standing five feet tall and weighing 28 pounds, it repeats themes found on the original Mace. The head of the current Mace displays four emblems: the Rose, the Thistle, the Harp, and the Fleur-de-lis. These same emblems are found engraved on the staff of the Mace, with the exception of an Irish Shamrock replacing the Harp. On the top, a crown symbolizes the Monarch, while four beavers represent the province’s place as part of Canada. Finally, an orb and a cross represent the spiritual and religious aspects of Manitoba life. This Mace was made to celebrate the opening of the second Legislative building. The initials V.R., representing the reigning Monarch Queen Victoria, are engraved on its head. The Table Officers have a tradition of rubbing various symbols on the Mace with their robe sleeves while waiting for the Speaker’s Parade to start, in order to summon good luck for the sitting day.

    SaSkatcheWan EleCtIonS: A History DecemBer 13th, 1905 The Liberal Party formed Saskatchewan’s first elected government. The Liberals were led by Walter Scott, an MP representing the area of Saskatchewan in Wilfred Laurier’s federal government. Frederick Haultain, the former premier of the Northwest Territories, led the Provincial Rights Party. Haultain was linked to the Conservative Party and had advocated for Alberta and Saskatchewan to be one province named Buffalo. He begrudged Laurier for creating two provinces, and fought Saskatchewan’s first election by opposing federal interference in provincial areas of jurisdiction. RESultS: Party Leader Candidates elected Popular vote Liberal Walter Scott 25 16 52.25% Provincial Rights Frederick Haultain 24 9 47.47% Independent 1 - 0.28% Total Seats 25 AuguST 14th, 1908 The number of MLAs expanded to 41, reflecting the rapidly growing population. The Liberals ran 40 candidates in 41 constituencies: William Turgeon ran in both Prince Albert City and Duck Lake. He won Duck Lake but lost Prince Albert. At the time it was common for candidates to run in multiple constituencies to help ensure their election. If the candidate won in two or more constituencies, they would resign from all but one. By-elections would then be held to find representatives for the vacated constituencies. This practice is no longer allowed. RESultS: Party Leader Candidates elected Popular vote Liberal Walter Scott 41 27 50.79% Provincial Rights Frederick Haultain 40 14 47.88% Independent-Liberal 1 - 0.67% Independent 2 - 0.66% Total Seats 41 July 11th, 1912 The Provincial Rights Party morphed into the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan, and continued to campaign for expanding provincial jurisdiction.
