Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. Fourteen species of Parioglossus are recognized from the warm temperate to tropical western Pacific and Indian Oceans: P. aporos n. sp., P. dotui, P. jormosus, P. lineatus n. sp., P. marginalis n. sp., P. nudus n. sp., P. palustris, P. philippinus, P. rainjordi, P. raoi, P. taeniatus, P. triquetrus n. sp., P. verticalis n. sp., P. sp. Synonymies, general morphology and osteology of the genus are described, and a key for separating the species is included. Diagnoses, descriptions, distributions, comparisons, line drawings and photographs of each species are given as well as synonymies of previously described species. Notes on ecology and food preferences are included when known. Tables of meristics and morphometrics are included for the holotypes and for all other material. -

Due to their small size, cryptic ecology and ambiguous barcoding, gobiid fishes, nucleotide morphological characters, gobiids diversity was not documented completely. In this study, DNA diagnostic characters barcodes were generated for 11 species of gobiids, collected from the Ashtamudi Lake, India. The mitochondrial COI gene was amplified using universal primers and the resulted 650 bp History amplicon was sequenced. The COI barcodes clearly distinguished all the species with high inter- specific genetic distance values than intra-specific values based on K2P (Kimura 2 Parameter) Received 2 May 2013 model. The average genetic distance (K2P model) within species, genus and family was 1.2%, Revised 5 August 2013 22.2% and 25.3%, respectively. In addition to barcode-based species identification system, Accepted 10 August 2013 Nucleotide Diagnostic (ND) characters specific for species were identified. -

Although Stegastes rocasensis, endemic to the Rocas atoll and Fernando de Noronha archipelago, and S. sanctipauli, endemic to the São Pedro and São Paulo archipelago, differ in color pattern, they exhibit similar morphological characters and largely overlapping counts of fin rays and lateral-line scales. Another nominal insular species, S. trindadensis, has recently been synonymized with S. fuscus but retained as a valid subspecies by some authors. Counts and morphometric analyses and mitochondrial DNA (COI, 16SrRNA, CytB) and nuclear DNA (rag1 and rhodopsin) comparisons of three insular species (S. rocasensis, S. sanctipauli and S. trindadensis) and three other South Atlantic species (S. fuscus, S. variabilis and S. pictus) were carried out in the present study. Analyses of the principal components obtained by traditional multivariate morphometry indicate that the species in general have similar body morphology. Molecular analyses revealed conspicuous similarity between S. rocasensis and S. sanctipauli and between S. trindadensis and S. fuscus and a clear divergence between S. variabilis from Northeast Brazil and S. variabilis from the Caribbean region. -

It is distinguished from all other described species of Parioglossus as follows: dark lateral body stripe absent, 100 or more scales in longitudinal series from above pectoral-fin base to base of caudal fin, pectoral-fin rays 19-21, membrane of first dorsal fin attached to second dorsal fin in males and females, mature males with dorsal-fin spines 3-5 fila- mentous and about equal in length, fresh males with narrow yellow stripe running dorsolaterally along body from head to caudal fin. Key words: Gobioidei, Ptereleotridae, Parioglossus galzini, Rapa Island, French Polynesia Introduction The first expedition of a comprehensive survey of the marine biodiversity of the fauna and flora of French Polynesia was conducted at Rapa Island (Fig. 1), Austral Archipelago, in 2002, by an International group of scientists working with the French Polynesian Govern- ment.
