Directing Anton Chekhov's the Seagull Unlocking the Body, Finding the Heart: Directing Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull by KATHLEEN JOY DUBORG B.F.A., The University of British Columbia, 1990 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF FINE ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Theatre) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2014 © Kathleen Joy Duborg, 2014 Abstract Unlocking the Body, Finding the Heart: Directing Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull explores my directorial practice while staging Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Telus Studio Theatre, University of British Columbia from January 23 to February 8, 2014. As presented in the following pages, my primary objective was to find and deliver an immediate and unique interpretation of this exceptional play’s dramatization of romantic and artistic conflict in late 19th Century Russia. My practice centred upon an analysis and rehearsal process that investigated character through movement and an understanding of the connectedness between the body and emotional states. I also examine how I worked within the Telus Theatre thrust stage configuration, finding ways to not only overcome this challenge, but to use it to my advantage. Finally, I look at how The Seagull served as a crucible for me to expand and begin defining my practice and abilities as a director. In doing so, I also discovered a deep passion for teaching—a journey that should be evident in both my journal and directorial process pages. ARCHITECTURE Neoclassicism represented intelligence An example of 19th century and culture, so aristocrats of this time neoclassical architecture attempted to reflect this in their architecture. Features of neoclassical architecture include geometric forms, simplicity in structure, grand scales, dramatic use of Greek columns, Roman details, and French windows. Sorin’s estate includes French windows, and likely other elements of neoclassical style. The Seagull: From Disaster to Triumph I really do believe that no play can be set up by even the most talented producer without the author's personal guidance and directions ¼ There are different interpretations, but the author has the right to demand that his play is performed and the parts played wholly according to his own interpretation ¼ It is necessary that the particular atmosphere intended by the author is created. (Anton Chekhov)1 A conductor is entitled to his own interpretation of a score; a director is entitled to his own interpretation of a play. The question is, at what point does leeway become licence? (Michael Heim)2 Despite the fact that he felt that Ivanov (1887) had not been interpreted correctly by critics and theatrical practitioners alike, Chekhov had scored a minor theatrical success with that play. He was to endure the pain of seeing his next play, The Wood Demon (1889), fail miserably in its Moscow production. J. L. Styan is probably correct when he asserts that: The former was a success with the public because it was more closely modelled after the kind of melodrama which was common throughout Europe at that time; the latter was a failure because Chekhov had discarded too many of those theatrical conventions the audience expected.3 Chekhov was to wait six years before he again risked presenting a new play for production. The Seagull (1896) is a transitional play that only partially achieves his aim of showing `life as it is' in a realistic manner. The playwright did not totally avoid employing the dramatic clichés that he had inherited from the theatrical tradition of his day.

    THE CHERRY ORCHARD by Anton Chekhov THE AUTHOR Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was born into a poor family - his father was a shopkeeper and his grandfather had been a serf - a year before the emancipation of the serfs in 1861. He thus grew up in a country experiencing great changes, including the revolutionary movements that would eventually lead to the overthrow of the Romanov dynasty. At the age of nineteen, Chekhov traveled to Moscow to study medicine, and while he was there, supported himself by writing comic pieces for local magazines. Soon, his writing became so popular that he gave up any thought of a career in medicine. Most of his short stories - the works for which he is most famous - were written while he was in his twenties. As he grew older, however, he turned from comedy to more serious themes. Though his early plays had been dismal failures, he returned to writing for the theater in 1896, and in his final eight years wrote the four plays that established his reputation on the stage - The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. The last of these was written as he was suffering the final depredations of tuberculosis, from which he died only months after it first reached the stage. Chekhov’s plays were criticized in his own day for their lack of plot. His focus on characterization and atmosphere was little appreciated by his contemporaries, and he feared that his plays could never be produced outside Russia because they partook so strongly of the Russian spirit.

But not flashy, philosophical ennui. Open Preview See a Problem? His works have a certain freshness that transcends the period. That said I find the theme of provincial Russian boredom and backwardness a bit tedious especially in a big chunk. But it's fun to see what the translator has attempted. This volume simply enlarges that desire. This pretty much completes my inquiry into Chekhov; I will, of course, go back to reread his plays and stories and give The Three Sisters a second chance. But from there it goes in all kinds of unusual directions. His plays are so delicate, that you just know you're losing something due to the translations. And that, in my opinion, is the problem with Senelick. Chekhov wasn't a solidly middle-class Edwardian Englishman reflecting on a world I don't think that this translation is the one that I was familiar with and can't recommend any one translation in particular. With a heavy head and a sluggish mind, weary, used up, discouraged, without faith or love or an object in life, I wander like a shadow among other men, not knowing why I am alive or what it is that I want.

    The Seagull By Anton Chekhov The historical context of The Seagull is late 19th century Russia, teetering on the brink of massive social change. Within twenty years the Tzar would be dead and a revolution would create the world’s first Communist country. Radical groups were being formed against the Imperial State and the harsh conditions in factories. Additionally, in 1890, Chekhov, knew that he was dying from TB and there is a unique mood that overshadows The Seagull. It is infused with melancholy, originating in the haplessness of the characters whose destiny is to either wallow in self-pity or indifference, or consume themselves in thwarted passion. It is these plays, with their snapshots of Chekhov reading ‘The Seagull’ to the cast frustrations of the everyday, that has continued to enthral audiences over the years. The Seagull explores the human tendency to reject love that is freely given and seek it where it is not offered. Many of the characters are caught in destructive, triangular relationships that evoke both pity and humour. We are asked to ponder if this is self-afflicted or engraved upon our human nature? Our hope is that time will resolve these issues. But, in Act 4, Chekhov delivers a coup de grâce showing us the same picture 2 years later and the reality and trappings of time, which robs some, like Madame Arkadina, of beauty, and others, like her son (and perhaps the audience) Konstantin, of hope. With these themes under discussion, it is not surprising that, when first staged, in St. Petersburg in 1896, it was very badly received.
