Voorwoord Het was stil in de spelersbus van Feyenoord tijdens de kille tocht naar één van de Friese elf steden, waar een beker- wedstrijd wachtte. Achter het grote, gezamenlijke zwijgen scholen gedachten aan Carlo de Leeuw, de geboren Rotter- dammer die twintig jaar lang materiaalman was bij de club waar hij zelf ooit in het eerste speelde. Carlo was geliefd bij veel spelers. Vrolijk en altijd in voor een geintje. Vandaag overleed hij, op 13 februari 2020. Toen de bus in de buurt van Heerenveen kwam, wou Dick Advocaat zijn mannen nog even toespreken. De trainer zou nog even zeggen… De woorden die hij wilde meegeven, bleven steken in zijn keel. Dat gaf niet, want iedereen wist al voor wie we het vandaag deden. Geen woorden, dan maar daden. Het was stil op de vaderlandse sportvelden toen Eddy Pie- ters Graafland overleed. Dinsdag 28 april 2020, de dag na Koningsdag, dit jaar zo vreemd gevierd omdat een pande- mie Nederland platlegde.
