Giant Puppets Roam the Streets When the British motor industry was overseen by ‘The Prince of Darkness’ ~ See page 12 ~ Vol. 30 No. 2 May 2012 CARMAN PHIL Giant Puppets Roam The Streets R Good Weather, Fuel Panic Drive UK Retail Surge WARM WEATHER and a spate of panic-buying for car fuel caused retail sales in Britain to surge by 1.8 percent in March compared with a month earlier, official data showed last month. The figures released by the Office for National Statistics were well ahead of the market consensus of 0.5 percent growth. They contrasted with a drop of 0.7 percent in February, and encouraged hope that Britain’s economy returned to growth in the first quarter of the year. Government warnings to prepare for a possible strike by tanker drivers set off a wave of panic buying of petrol, contrib- uting to a 4.9 percent gain in petrol sales Continued on page 4 R Inflation Rises For First Time In Six Months INCREASES in the price of food and clothing pushed inflation in Britain to 3.5 percent in March, the first increase in the annual rate in six months, official figures showed last month. The Office for National Statistics said the rate was up from February’s 3.4 percent – still far above the Bank of Eng- land’s official target of two percent. Analysts, however, said the inflation rate, which had been falling steadily from a peak of 5.2 percent in September, is likely to soon resume its decline. “This should be only temporary,” said Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist at Capital Economics. A recent drop in oil prices should push inflation down in coming months, she said. TO COMMEMORATE the 100th the playful 9ft-tall steel and papier-mache him to rest. Its author was Bert Weedon, an unassuming dance- band musician whose unpatronising approach made him Britain's earliest expert on the instrumental niceties of rock'n'roll. Weedon, who has died aged 91, was among the first British musicians to incorporate into his style the innovations of American country and western, boogie and rock'n'roll guitarists. In the s, Weedon played on hundreds of recording sessions for most of the leading singers and bands of the era, including Alma Cogan, Dickie Valentine and Frankie Vaughan. He recalled that "you had to be so adaptable and flexible. For example, Winifred Atwell would want a honky-tonk approach, Russ Conway something light, while Frankie Vaughan would want something quite beaty and Ronnie Hilton something else again. He took part in more than 5, broadcasts during his career. It is difficult now to imagine the vehemence with which the musical establishment, from Sir Malcolm Sargent to Steve Raceexcoriated the records of Bill Haley and Elvis Presley and their effect on British youth. Weedon was one of the few experienced studio session players who wholeheartedly embraced rock, which he first heard when Stapleton procured a copy of Haley's Rock Around the Clock months before Bert Weedons Play in a Day: (Guitar) was issued in Britain.

DUNDEE UNITED ON THIS DAY JANUARY 11 Dundee United On This Day THURSDAY 1st JANUARY 2015 A great start to 2015 as United thump Dundee in the new year derby at Tannadice, in front of 13,000 fans. Stuart Armstrong deflects a Chris Erskine shot into the Dundee net in the first minute, and an Erskine strike and a Gary Mackay-Steven double make it 4-1 by half-time. Jaroslaw Fojut and Charlie Telfer add two more in the second half, and the 6-2 final score puts United third in the Premiership, just three points behind Aberdeen and two behind Celtic. WEDNESDAY 1st JANUARY 1913 Dumbarton are the new year’s day visitors at Tannadice, but, although a railway special brings 300 fans through from the west coast, The Dundee Evening Telegraph reports that very few of them make it to the game, presumably as a side effect of their new year celebrations. The Dumbarton players, on the other hand, show no sign of any hangover as they start brightly in a match full of chances, but Dundee Hibernian – as the club were called before changing their name to United – come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3. THURSDAY 2nd JANUARY 1958 United beat East Stirling 7-0. Jimmy Brown and Wilson Humphries both grab doubles, and Allan Garvie, Willie McDonald and Joe Roy score once each. Twenty-year-old Aberdonian defender Ron Yeats makes his debut in the match. He features prominently for United for four seasons, before, in 1961, he’s sold for £30,000 to Liverpool, where he becomes hugely influential and plays over 450 games.
