It aspires to offer accounts that cut across disciplinary and geographical boundaries, while being sensitive to how institutional circumstances and different scales of time shape the making of knowledge. Founded in 1990, EFF represents over 25,000 dues-paying members, including consumers, hobbyists, artists, writers, computer programmers, entrepreneurs, students, teachers, and researchers, who are united in their reliance on a balanced copyright system that ensures adequate incentives for creative work while promoting innovation, freedom of speech, and broad access to information in the digital age. Annual Report 2018
ANNUAL REPORT 2018 DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND GLOBAL HEALTH Annual Report 2018 DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND GLOBAL HEALTH Umeå International School of Public Health (UISPH) Umeå Centre for Global Health Research (UCGHR) Printed by Cityprint i Norr AB, Umeå, Sweden 2019 Prologue To all staff, students, collaborators and other colleagues, The year 2018 will be remembered as one of change and ongoing commitment! After more than three decades in our “old” house we moved to a new location. This was a big step to take and much of the hard work was done by our “Moving Group” to ensure as smooth a process as possible. In April we closed the doors of the old house and have since settled and started to feel at home in our new building. During the year we also paved the way to become a department in our own right, after previously being a unit and part of the larger department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine. In December the decision was taken by the University Board to form the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health from 1st of January 2019: “This change aims to create an interdisciplinary research and educational environment that contributes to a global and sustainable improvement regarding health and welfare.” We will continue to strengthen our activities involving collaboration in both teaching and research. We are located in the Region of Västerbotten and the wealth of experience and creative collaboration within the Region connects us to international collaborations around the world. Public health is based on the principles of equity, social justice, participation, and evidence-informed practice. -

Photograph by Mount Wilson and Los Campanas Observatories HORACE WELCOME BABCOCK September 13, 1912−August 29, 2003 BY GEORGE W . P RESTON ORACE BABCOCK’S CAREER at the Mount Wilson and Palomar H(later, Hale) Observatories spanned more than three decades. During the first 18 years, from 1946 to 1964, he pioneered the measurement of magnetic fields in stars more massive than the sun, produced a famously successful model of the 22-year cycle of solar activity, and invented important instruments and techniques that are employed throughout the world to this day. Upon assuming the directorship of the observatories, he devoted his last 14 years to creating one of the world’s premier astronomical observatories at Las Campanas in the foothills of the Chilean Andes. CHILDHOOD AND EDUCATION Horace Babcock was born in Pasadena, California, the only child of Harold and Mary Babcock. Harold met Horace’s mother, Mary Henderson, in Berkeley during his student days at the College of Electrical Engineering, University of California. After brief appointments as a laboratory assis- tant at the National Bureau of Standards in 1906 and as a physics teacher at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1907, Horace’s father was invited by George Ellery Hale in 1908 to join the staff of the Mount Wilson Observatory (MWO), where he remained for the rest of his career. -

A Pioneer in Quaternary Geology in Scandinavia
doi:10.5200/baltica.2012.25.01 BALTICA Volume 25 Number 1 June 2012 : 1–22 Gerard De Geer – a pioneer in Quaternary geology in Scandinavia Ingemar Cato, Rodney L. Stevens Cato, I., Stevens, R. L., 2011. Gerard De Geer – a pioneer in Quaternary geology in Scandinavia. Baltica 5 (1), 1–22. Vilnius. ISSN 0067–3064. Abstract The paper presents a pioneer in Quaternary geology, both internationally and in Scandinavia – the Swedish geologist and professor Gerard De Geer (1858–1943). This is done, first by highlighting one of his most important contributions to science – the varve chronology – a method he used to describe the Weichselian land–ice recession over Scandinavia, and secondly by the re–publication of a summary article on Gerard De Geer’s early scientific achievement in 1881–1906 related to the Baltic Sea geology, written by his wife, Ebba Hult De Geer. Keywords Gerard De Geer• Clay varves • Varve chronology • Glacial and Postglacial• Quaternary geology • Baltic Sea Ingemar Cato [[email protected]], Geological Survey of Sweden, PO Box 670, SE-751 28 Uppsala, and University of Gothenburg, Department of Earth Sciences, PO Box 460, SE-405 30 Göteborg, Sweden; Rodney Stevens [stevens@gvc. gu.se], University of Gothenburg, Department of Earth Sciences, PO Box 460, SE-405 30 Göteborg, Sweden. Manuscript submitted 11 November 2011. INTRODUCTION It is unfortunately becoming more common in scientific papers that authors do not cite original sources of the methodology, observations and interpretations that their studies are based on. In many cases, the references are to very recent articles dealing with similar issues, which at best have correct references to the original sources. -
