After more than three decades in our “old” house we moved to a new location. This was a big step to take and much of the hard work was done by our “Moving Group” to ensure as smooth a process as possible. In April we closed the doors of the old house and have since settled and started to feel at home in our new building. During the year we also paved the way to become a department in our own right, after previously being a unit and part of the larger department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine. In December the decision was taken by the University Board to form the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health from 1st of January 2019: “This change aims to create an interdisciplinary research and educational environment that contributes to a global and sustainable improvement regarding health and welfare.” We will continue to strengthen our activities involving collaboration in both teaching and research. We are located in the Region of Västerbotten and the wealth of experience and creative collaboration within the Region connects us to international collaborations around the world. Public health is based on the principles of equity, social justice, participation, and evidence-informed practice.

K-pop has experi- enced two decades of expansion from South-Korea to global markets, becoming one of the leading music industries in the world. The purpose of this thesis was to study the marketing activities of two case compa- nies, SM Entertainment and BigHit Entertainment, and two of their boy music groups, NCT and BTS respec- tively. The focus of this thesis was to showcase the groups’ promotional activities in the U.S. and to study the usage of marketing mix. The thesis is compiled of an empirical study of the K-pop industry and its international activities in the U.S., organized into 3 sections explaining different time periods and the market changes internationally. The mar- keting strategies of the case companies were explained to describe the key concepts the businesses focus on, and the 4Ps of the marketing mix were analyzed in the two groups of BTS and NCT.

Cultural workers in the restructuring of post-industrial cities. Geographica 14. 153 pp. Uppsala: Department of Social and Economic Geography. ISBN 978-91-506-2631-5. This research explores the agency and positioning of cultural workers in the restructuring of contemporary cities. This positioning is ambiguous. Cultural workers often lead precarious professional lives, yet their significant symbolic and cultural capital is widely mobilised in the service of neoliberal urban restructuring, including ‘creative city’ flagship developments and gentrification. But cultural workers’ actual agency, their reactions to urban processes that exploit their presence, and their relations to other urban social groups, are poorly understood and hard to decipher. This thesis addresses these issues through three articles. Paper I examines a process of artist-led gentrification ongoing in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York. It shows that artists, gallerists and other members of the local art scene contribute to sustaining gentrification through their everyday practices and discourses. The gentrification frontier is constructed on an everyday level as a transitional space and time in the scene members’ lives. Gentrification is de-politicised by discursively underplaying its conflictual components of class and racial struggle. Forms of resistance to gentrification amongst scene members are found, but they appear to be sector-specific and exclusive.

Katsaus helmikuussa 2018 klikkejä keränneisiin vumäärä otsikoihin 30 + 22 Tässä opinnäytetyössä tarkastellaan verkkomedioiden kannalta olennaista otsikointia. Tut- kimuskysymyksenä on, millainen otsikko vetää silmäileviä ja sivustolta toiseen pomppivia verkkolukijoita puoleensa. Tutkielmassa tarkistellaan viiden suurimman suomalaisen verkkomedian runsaasti luettuja verkko-otsikoita muun muassa niiden informatiivisuuden, objektiivisuuden sekä kieliopillis- ten ominaisuuksien avulla. Lisäksi vetäviä verkko-otsikoita lähestytään käytännön näkökulmasta otsikoita tekevien toi- mittajien haastattelujen avulla. Opinnäytetyöni valossa näyttää siltä, että helmikuussa 2018 verkko-otsikossa toimi kuvai- leva, rönsyileväkin kieli, jossa yksityiskohdat ja osin sisällön paljastava ilmaisutyyli houkut- televat lukijan klikkaamaan otsikkoa. Toimivan verkko-otsikon reseptin aineksia näyttävät olevan kysymys, jutun tapahtumapaikalle vievä kohtausotsikko, uutisen kierrellen ilmaiseva tyyli, sitaatti, ajatusviiva, ihmisen nimi sekä adjektiivit.
