In a society so culturally and religiously diverse as Canada, how does the United Church of Canada (UCC) build just relations with the Other without breaching the Other’s identity? In the context of Canada’s current multicultural policy and the Church’s vision to become an intercultural church, this study develops a missiology for the Church. This thesis claims that Canada’s Integrative Multiculturalism promotes religious conflicts through the assimilation and the integration of difference into the dominant culture by discarding unwelcomed differences in the public sphere: difference, rather, is a gift for building just community. In order to develop the philosophical foundation for an intercultural theology, the thesis employs key concepts from the work of three scholars – Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida and Homi Bhabha. Rather than relying on common beliefs to carry out God’s mission (missio Dei), the Church’s report World Mission (1966) provides an historical and theological resource for developing a mutuality model of missiology and mission practice in which the church works justly with Others, sharing a common concern. To develop the model, several components are offered: the Aboriginal philosophy “all my relations,” the Six Nations’ Two Row Wampum belt and Nam-dong Suh’s minjung theology. This thesis proposes “all my relations” as a metaphor for the model of becoming an intercultural church and ii its mission practice with Others whether they are the people of religious faith or not. While sustaining their own identities, participants create a safe, welcoming in-between third space where dialogical dialogue takes place in the solidarity of Others sharing their concern for justice. iii Acknowledgments During this journey of preparing this dissertation, I have been blessed with the help and encouragement of a great number of people. There was a time when the church followed a process of welcome based on “Behaving, Believing, Belonging.” Christians were told you had to behave a certain way, believe a set of doctrines, and then they were allowed to belong to the church community. According to this model, belonging is dependent on behaving and believing in line with what is deemed acceptable by the community. Is this truly welcoming in God’s eyes? Or are we distorting our understanding of God and God’s grace? Jesus calls his disciples – and us today – to welcome all. We are all agents in giving and receiving welcome. The process of welcome we at KHUC are striving to do is “Belonging, Believing, Becoming.” God welcomes us and we in turn welcome one another, especially those who are marginalized, or considered the least and the lost. This model of welcome allows people to come as they are. It allows people to be honest and vulnerable. It leaves room for grace. It acknowledges that we are not perfect, but God is. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done, how you believe – it doesn’t even matter if you are Christian.

What happened during these years transformed social and cultural developments for the rest of the century. Religious historians have described the period as a “watershed” and a “seedbed.” The most remarkable religious phenomenon in 1960s Canada was the rapid acceleration of a process of dechristianization that began to push the very denominational faith communities that had first evangelized Canada toward extinction. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine this “decade of ferment” through the lens of one of those denominations, the United Church of Canada. The saga of the United Church provides an important piece to the puzzle: “What happened to Christian Canada?” The era began well. Many new United Church congregations emerged in the suburbs while others embarked on ambitious building programmes. Exciting change was in the air.     Homiletic Vol. 44, No. 2 (2019) Unfinished and Unfolding Tasks of Preaching: Interdisciplinary, Intercultural, and Interreligious Approaches in the Postcolonial Context of Migration HyeRan Kim-Cragg Timothy Eaton Memorial Church Associate Professor in Preaching Emmanuel College, University of Toronto Abstract: Addressing the preacher’s need to identify their social locations as a preacher, this article explores three critical approaches for homiletics in the postcolonial context of migration: interdisciplinary, intercultural, and interreligious. The interdisciplinary approach to homiletics was sought in the New Homiletic movement but has yet to be fully pursued. Continued dialogue with other disciplines is urgent in a context where complicated postcolonial realities must be addressed. The intercultural issues of preaching are equally important in this context. This paper, therefore, sketches the changing ecclesial landscape where a monolingual homogeneous white congregation and preacher are no longer a norm. How can preaching reflect multivocality and prevent linguistic minority members from being tokenized? The power imbalance embedded in the language of the preacher needs consideration. The interreligious approach has only recently appeared on the horizon of homiletical thought, challenging the Christian-supremacist positions and interpretative practices. Overcoming Christian-centrism, the article argues, can happen once the fear of the other, the fear of difference, and the fear of mixing are acknowledged in the preaching event. Interreligious reality is unfolding and inevitable as a marker of our postcolonial migration context. It potentially ushers in an exciting opportunity for the study of Christian preaching, if we are willing to embrace it. It explores the ways in which progressive Christian churches in Canada adopt biblical criticism and popular theology. Contributing to the anthropology of Christianity, this study is primarily an ethnographic and linguistic analysis that juxtaposes contemporary conflicts over notions of the Christian self into the intersecting contexts of public discourse, contending notions of the secular and congregational dynamics. Methodologically, it is based upon two-and-a-half years of in-depth participant observation research at five churches and distinguishes itself as the first scholarly study of progressive Christianity in North America. I begin this study by outlining the historical context of skepticism in Canadian Protestantism and arguing that skepticism and doubt serve as profoundly religious experiences, which provide a fuller framework than secularization in understanding the experiences of Canadian Protestants in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In doing so, I draw parallels between the ways that historical and contemporary North American Christians negotiate the tensions between their faith and biblical criticism, scientific empiricism and ii liberal morality. Chapter Two seeks to describe the religious, cultural and socio-economic worlds inhabited by the progressive Christians featured in this study.
