BELDIE” HERBARIUM Emilia VECHIU¹, Lucian DINCĂ1 1 “Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry, Braşov, Romania email: [email protected] Abstract: ”Al. Beldie” Herbarium from ”Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry contains a rich collection of plants. Approximately 40.000 vouchers belong to this herbarium and are stored in 600 drawers. Herbariuns are important because they provide information about plants and their area of propagation during long periods that help to carry out studies in taxonomy, biodiversity, ecology, anatomy, morphology etc. As such, various investigations were carried out with the help of data from this herbarium concerning different families and types of plants. The purpose of this article is to morphologically and ecologicallycharacterize certain Cornus species that can be found in this herbarium. Cornus Genus contains approximately 55-58 species cares that are widespread in the northern hemisphere, with few in Africa and southern America. The species found in the herbarium are the following: Cornus alba L., Cornus amomum Mill., Cornus alternifolia L., Cornus asperifolia Michx., Cornus baileyi J.M. Coult. & W.H. Evans, Cornus canadensis L., Cornus candidissima Marshall., Cornus florida L., Cornus mas L., Cornus macrophylla Wall., Cornus obliqua Raf., Cornus paniculata L'Hér., Cornus pumila Koehne, Cornus sanguinea L., Cornus stolonifera Michx. Cornus stricta Lam. and Cornus suecica L . Each plants contains data referring to the name of the species, the harvesting place, the harvesting year, the person who has collected them as well as their conservation degree. -

2003SOUTHEASTERN NATURALIST 2(3):347–368 THE VASCULAR FLORA OF GUS ENGELING WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, ANDERSON COUNTY, TEXAS 1 2,3 2 JASON R. SINGHURST , JAMES C. CATHY , DALE PROCHASKA , 2 4 5 HAYDEN HAUCKE , GLENN C. KROH , AND WALTER C. HOLMES ABSTRACT - Field studies in the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area, which consists of approximately 4465.5 ha (11,034.1 acres) of the Post Oak Savannah of Anderson County, have resulted in an annotated checklist of the vascular flora corroborating its remarkable species richness. A total of 930 taxa (excluding family names), belonging to 485 genera and 145 families are re- corded. Asteraceae (124 species), Poaceae (114 species), Fabaceae (67 species), and Cyperaceae (61 species) represented the largest families. Six Texas endemic taxa occur on the site: Brazoria truncata var. pulcherrima (B. pulcherrima), Hymenopappus carrizoanus, Palafoxia reverchonii, Rhododon ciliatus, Trades- cantia humilis, and T. subacaulis. Within Texas, Zigadenus densus is known only from the study area. The area also has a large number of species that are endemic to the West Gulf Coastal Plain and Carrizo Sands phytogeographic distribution patterns. Eleven vegetation alliances occur on the property, with the most notable being sand post oak-bluejack oak, white oak-southern red oak-post oak, and beakrush-pitcher plant alliances. INTRODUCTION The Post Oak Savannah (Gould 1962) comprises about 4,000,000 ha of gently rolling to hilly lands that lie immediately west of the Pineywoods (Timber belt). Some (Allred and Mitchell 1955, Dyksterhuis 1948) consider the vegetation of the area as part of the deciduous forest; i.e., burned out forest that is presently regenerating. -

Rothrock, Ph.D. Taylor University Upland, IN 46989-1001 Introduction Since the early nineteenth century the Indiana landscape has undergone a massive transformation (Jackson 1997). In the pre-settlement period, Indiana was an almost unbroken blanket of forests, prairies, and wetlands. Much of the land was cleared, plowed, or drained for lumber, the raising of crops, and a range of urban and industrial activities. Indiana’s native biota is now restricted to relatively small and often isolated tracts across the State. This fragmentation and reduction of the State’s biological diversity has challenged Hoosiers to look carefully at how to monitor further changes within our remnant natural communities and how to effectively conserve and even restore many of these valuable places within our State. To meet this monitoring, conservation, and restoration challenge, one needs to develop a variety of appropriate analytical tools. Ideally these techniques should be simple to learn and apply, give consistent results between different observers, and be repeatable. Floristic Assessment, which includes metrics such as the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and Mean C values, has gained wide acceptance among environmental scientists and decision-makers, land stewards, and restoration ecologists in Indiana’s neighboring states and regions: Illinois (Taft et al. 1997), Michigan (Herman et al. 1996), Missouri (Ladd 1996), and Wisconsin (Bernthal 2003) as well as northern Ohio (Andreas 1993) and southern Ontario (Oldham et al. -

Tucker2 1Illinois State Museum, Springfield, IL 62706 2Department of Biological Sciences, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL 61920 3Illinois Department of Natural Resources 1660 West Polk Avenue, Charleston, IL 61920 *corresponding author ([email protected]) ABSTRACT The vascular flora of Capel Glacial Drift Hill Prairie Natural Area, Shelby County, Illi- nois was studied during the 2009 and 2010 growing seasons. The 1.10 ha glacial drift hill prairie is located on a southwest-facing slope associated with Lake Shelbyville, Wolf Creek State Park 4 km east of Findley, Illinois. Plant community structure was deter- mined using m2 square quadrats located at one-meter intervals along two randomly located transect lines. Frequency, mean cover, relative frequency, relative cover, and importance value (I. V. total = 200) were determined from the data collected. A total of 106 vascular plant taxa were observed on the site, with 39 encountered in the plots. Andropogon gerardii (big bluestem) had the highest importance value followed by Schi- zachyrium scoparium (little bluestem), Echinacea pallida (pale coneflower), and Dalea purpurea (purple prairie clover). Exotic species were represented by six taxa. Key Words: Andropogon gerardii, glacial hill prairie formation, soil slumping. Produced with financial assistance from The Couchiching Conservancy. The City of Kawartha Lakes Flora Project is sponsored by the Kawartha Field Naturalists based in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. In 2008, information about plants in CKL was scattered and scarce. At the urging of Michael Oldham, Biologist at the Natural Heritage Information Centre at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Dale Leadbeater and Anne Barbour formed a committee with goals to: • Generate a list of species found in CKL and their distribution, vouchered by specimens to be housed at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, making them available for future study by the scientific community; • Improve understanding of natural heritage systems in the CKL; • Provide insight into changes in the local plant communities as a result of pressures from introduced species, climate change and population growth; and, • Publish the findings of the project . Over eight years, more than 200 volunteers and landowners collected almost 2000 voucher specimens, with the permission of landowners. Over 10,000 observations and literature records have been databased. The project has documented 150 new species of which 60 are introduced, 90 are native and one species that had never been reported in Ontario to date.
