4 2016 SHAPE America Eastern District Conference Program Welcome From 2016-17 SHAPE America Eastern District President

elcome to beautiful Atlantic City and SHAPE America Eastern District’s 95th Annual Conference. I hope that this year’s conference will inspire, excite and motivate you to become the best physical Weducator, health educator and dance educator you can possibly be for your students. Together, as a district and as a national organization, we are working to make all our students strong, healthy and active. This year’s conference is full of sessions to help you improve your pedagogy, your assessment tech- niques and your creativity to reach our goal of 50 Million Strong by 2029.

This conference brings you 160 speakers, 125 presentations and 25 commer- cial presentations. Besides our plethora of sessions, on Sunday for our Open- ing Session, we are pleased to have Steve Jefferies, SHAPE America Past Presi- dent, give us a brief overview of what 50 Million Strong means and how you can become a champion for your students. Judy LoBianco, a SHAPE America Eastern District Past President and current member of the Board of Directors for SHAPE America, will deliver Sunday’s keynote address: 50 Million Strong: Unleash the Power of Your Inner Champion! It is sure to be uplifting. Monday’s General Session titled; Legitimized! “Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA) Now What? will feature another inspiring keynote speaker, Kymm Ballard, the Execu- tive Director for SPARK/Sportime.

We have a few new features this year running during our conference. First our Memorial Lecture has taken on a new design – Celebration of Life! We are hoping you will get a chance to stop in and take a moment to remember our Eastern District friends and leaders who have passed over the last year. We also added a student College Bowl Competition that resembles the game of Jeopardy. Students in teams of 4 will com- pete for the coveted title of Most Intelligent Students representing their college or university. We will also have a Job Fair where students graduating this spring, or in the near future, can meet with districts that may have job openings for the next school year. Informal interviews may take place so have your resume handy!

After you have fun at the College Bowl, make sure your team signs up for the SHAPE America Eastern Dis- trict Challenge! Teams of 6-8 students, faculty and friends compete in wacky relay style races to win the title of Eastern District Champions! Trophies and chocolate for all!

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with so many wonderful and passionate people who have worked very hard to bring this conference to our members. I hope you find the sessions informative, use- ful, and refreshing. And while you are here, please enjoy the beautiful destination of Atlantic City and all it has to offer.

Be Well, Ellen Benham President, SHAPE America Eastern District

shapeamerica.org/eastern2016 l #SHAPEeastern 5 Welcome From SHAPE America Past President

n behalf of the SHAPE America Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 2016 Eastern District Conference. You have an exciting program ahead of you. Most importantly however, I would Olike to invite you to personally commit to supporting SHAPE America’s bold new vision: To get all children in America’s public schools to be physically active and healthy within the next 14 years. This com- mitment, better known as 50 Million Strong by 2029, challenges all of us – in schools and colleges - to reconsider, reimagine, and redesign how we deliver physical education and health education to America’s 50 million students. It’s a significant professional change, but one that’s vital we all support to secure a great future for the health education and physical education professions.

Public awareness, interest, and support for improving the health and well-being of young people today continues’ to increase. There has been an explosive growth in organizations and programs targeted at changing the physical activity and health habits of school-aged children. For the health and physical education professions it is truly a time of great opportunity. But to succeed all of us will need new skills, knowledge, and the motivation to impact the learning and behavior of America’s students beyond our traditional role in classrooms and gymnasiums.

During your conference, you will have many opportunities to learn more about the central role that physical educators and health educators can play in succeed- ing with SHAPE America’s 50 Million Strong by 2029 commitment. It will also be a great time for you to share your own ideas so that we can learn from you. If you were able to attend the recent Minneapolis National Convention I hope you had a wonderful experience. I would also like to invite all of you to start planning NOW to join us next year in Boston, March 14-18. Held over St. Patrick’s Day we anticipate it will be a lifetime “bucket list” experience!

I hope you find this year’s Eastern District conference stimulating, thought provoking, and informative. I sincerely thank you for the time and financial commitment you’ve made coming to the conference. Finally, be sure to connect with any of us on the SHAPE America Board of Directors or national staff to share your thoughts and suggestions about the future of the health and physical education professions.

Have a great conference!

Sincerely, Steve Jefferies SHAPE America Past President
