Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat suomalaiset kanavointia tekevät henkilöt ja heidän asiakkaansa. Tutkimusongelmana on selvittää, millaista on kanavointia te- kevien henkilöiden elämä ja yrittäjyys henkimaailman, uskonnon ja yhteiskunnan rajoilla. Ensinnäkin tutkimuksessa käsitellään kanavointia tekevien henkilöiden ra- jankäyntiä erityisesti suhteessa henkiolentoihin, institutionaaliseen uskontoon ja asi- akkaisiin. Toiseksi siinä tarkastellaan tähän rajankäyntiin liittyviä tietoa koskevia kysymyksiä, kuten kanavoinnin tietämisen tapaa ja sen oppimista sekä siihen poh- jaavaa työtä ja yrittäjyyttä. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään etnografisia menetelmiä kuten osallistuvaa havain- nointia ja haastatteluja. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys painottaa suhteita, tiedol- lisia kysymyksiä ja aineellisuutta. Sen keskeiset käsitteet ovat rajatyö, semioottinen ideologia, kvalia, affektiivisuus ja affektiivinen työ. Käsitteiden avulla pureudutaan sosiaalisiin ja tiedollisiin erontekoihin, ihmisten ideoihin, toimintoihin, kokemuksiin ja ruumiillisuuteen. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu 33 teemahaastattelusta, osallistuvan ha- vainnoinnin avulla tuotetusta aineistosta, kyselyaineistosta ja kirjallisuudesta. Aineis- toa on analysoitu vertaamisen ja ristiinluennan sekä teoreettisten käsitteiden avulla. Tutkimus paikantuu uskontotieteen kenttään ja nykyuskonnollisuuden tutkimus- alueelle. Sen tarkoitus on tuottaa tietoa kanavointi-ilmiöstä, uushenkisyydestä ja sitä koskevasta yrittäjyydestä sekä uskonnollisuuden muutoksesta. Tutkimus tuo tietoa uushenkisyyden ja kanavoinnin tiedollisista ja aineellisista aspekteista ja uskonnol- lisuuden yksilökeskeistymisestä. Lisäksi se tarjoaa tietoa henkisen alan yrittäjien suhteista asiakkaisiin ja henkimaailman olentoihin, mikä uushenkisyyden tutkimuk- sessa on jäänyt vähälle. Kanavoinnin tapauksen avulla tutkimus tuo näkökulmia myös vaihtoehtoisista terapia- ja hoitomuodoista käytyihin keskusteluihin. Tutkimuksen mukaan ihmisten käsitykset kielestä ja erilaisista kehollisista mer- kityssuhteista sekä niiden tehtävistä ja toiminnasta vievät ihmisiä henkimaailman, uskonnon ja yhteiskunnan rajoille. Tutkimus näyttää, että kanavointi on tietämisen tapana aistillista ja affektiivista, ja se perustuu käsitykseen huokoisesta mielestä ja kehosta. Siinä osoitetaan, kuinka tietäminen ja tieto rakentuvat kanavoinnin ja uus- henkisyyden tapauksessa yhteisöllisesti ja kuinka alan yrittäjyydessä, palveluntarjo- ajien ja asiakkaiden välisen dynamiikan keskiössä ovat tiedolliset käsitykset ja eet- tiset näkökulmat. The subjects of the study are Finnish chan- neling practioners and their customers. The aim of the research is to examine what life and entrepreneurship of those practicing channeling is like on the boundaries of the spirit world, religion and society. Firstly, the study addresses the boundary-work of channeling practioners especially in relation to spirit beings, institutional religion, and customers. Secondly, within the framework of this boundary-work it examines epistemological questions, such as the nature of knowing in channeling and the ways of learning it, as well as channeling as entrepreneurship. Research methods employed include different ethnographic research methods such as participant observation and interviews. The theoretical framework builds on approaches emphazising relationality, questions of knowledge and materiality. The key concepts of the research are boundary-work, semiotic ideology, qualia, affectiv- ity, and affective labor. Through these concepts the research addresses questions of social and epistemological boundary-making, and the understandings, practices, ex- periences and views on the body related to channeling. The research data consists of 33 thematic interviews, material produced by participatory observation, and ques- tionnaires, and literature. The data analysis was conducted by comparison and cross- reading method guided by the key theoretical concepts. The research locates in the field of religious studies and the research area of mod- ern religiosity. Its purpose is to produce information about channeling phenomenon, new spirituality and new spiritual entrepreneurship, as well as the change in religiosity. The research provides information on the epistemological and material aspects of new spirituality and channeling and the individualization of religiosity. In addition, it pro- duces knowledge on the relationships spiritual entrepreneurs have to their customers and spirits, which has been lacking in research on new spirituality. The research also brings novel perspectives to discussions concerning alternative therapies. According to the study, people’s understandings of the nature of language and the human body push them toward the boundaries of the spirit world, religion, and society. The study points out that channeling as a means of knowing is sensual and affective in nature and is based on the perception of the mind and body as porous. The study demonstrates how knowing and knowledge in the fields of channeling and new spirituality are constructed communally, and how epistemological views and ethical perspectives are at the heart of spiritual entrepreneurship and the dynamics between service providers and customers.     9 THE END OF ‘NEW AGE’ The church dissatisfies me. I know all the things they teach. I want more, you know? (Alison, Unit of Service, 1997) We are trained to listen to experts in our culture and not to ourselves. The premise of the New Age is the other way around. (Spangler 1996: 184) The whole point is our journey,not our destination. (Edwards 1993: 63) Recapitulation In this book I have reconstructed the genealogy of a multivalent emblem,‘New Age’,within interconnected networks of ‘alternative’spirituality from the 1930s to the 1990s. In the first part, called ‘Emblem’, I examined Peter Caddy’s career in the Rosicrucian Order, the activities of Sheena Govan’s group and the early years of the Findhorn settlement. I found evidence of other networks active in England, New Zealand and the US in the late 1950s and early 1960s – George Trevelyan, the Heralds of the New Age, the North American ‘subculture’ delineated by David Spangler – for whom ‘New Age’ was an apocalyptic emblem within a cocktail of occult, psychic and spiritualistic ideas and practices. In this early period the expression had objective historical status among communicants: a ‘New Age’ was imminent, its apocalyptic harbingers were on the horizon and groups had to prepare themselves spiritually in response. In the second part, ‘Idiom’, I traced the diffusion and disintegration of this emblem in the 1970s and beyond under the influence of a youthful counter culture and a concomitant decline in the authority of grand narratives (Lyotard 1979) in the culture at large. ‘New Age’ became, as it were, adjectival, a loose ‘quality’ of a person, act or social process rather than a negotiated emblem.As a 195 IDIOM sign of this shift it became self-consciously problematised by both participants and observers – one informant in Lowe and Shaw (1993: 227) said vehemently ‘I hate that cliche “New Age” ’.

(WUSTO) Paper presented at the EDUCATION SUMMIT organised by the JUNIOR CHAMBER INTERNATIONAL (JCI), Adeyemi College of Education (ACE), Ondo Chapter on Tuesday July 16, 2013 at the Obasanjo Auditorium, ACE, Ondo. Ladies and gentlemen, When in April 2008 I was offered appointment by the Governing Council of Wesley University of Science and Technology, Ondo (WUSTO) to be the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, little did I know the enormity of the challenge before me. One of the mandates I was given is “moral regeneration” in the students which is central to the vision of the university. Moral regeneration! I exclaimed. All along in my career, I had concentrated formally on academic achievement of my students. I had handled moral regeneration informally at the individual level. My former students will bear me witness that I used to drive students who were not well-dressed out of my office or lecture room. I never condoned indecent exposure of body parts, untidy and non- conformist hairdos, lateness to class, sleeping in class, making noise on the corridor and engagement in open display of amorous relationship between students of the opposite sex. I also stood against and fought colleagues who engaged publicly in indecent behaviour e.g. Colleagues in the company of people with whom they do not have a formalized relationship in public places where people with formalized relationships also visit. One can go on listing different types of indecent behaviour arising from moral decadence that I, on my own, had little tolerance for.
