North-Bates Abstract of thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Sheffield Hallam University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2007 THE INFLUENCE OF COMPLEMENTARY PRACTICES AND SPIRITUALITY ON BRITISH DESIGN 1930-2005 ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the nature and role of spiritually-influenced approaches to design in Britain in the period 1930-2005. The role of spiritual factors in design is considered as a complement to the predominance of the Modernist rationalist- functionalist discourse prevalent in much twentieth century design history writing and theories of design. Non-rational and spiritual facets of Modernism in this period are also examined. The influence of ‘alternative’ lifestyles, the New Age movement, ecology, holism, complementary and alternative medical practices, and spirituality on design is presented as a complementary paradigm to the predominance of Modernism. The origins and development of these influences are explored in relation to design and material culture. In order to reveal a body of relevant exemplars, the particular areas selected for detailed examination are the domestic environment, gardens and landscape design, and the influence of Complementary and Alternative Medicine on the design of therapeutic environments. This material, arising from practices of consumption as well as those of designing, challenges some of the established methods of design history and to deal with this, insights from the academic disciplines of Archaeology and Pagan Studies, relating to Shamanic concepts of the object, are explored as useful adjuncts to Postmodernism and other approaches in theorising complementary and alternative design practices. The research demonstrates that during the period under consideration, what was once considered outlandish has now become part of the mainstream and has affected contemporary design practice, material culture and consumption. The pluralism of contemporary design ideologies and methods presents a complement to, and a transformation of the Modernist hegemony in design practice and writing. This study contributes to a more complete historical picture of British design in the twentieth century and indicates that the predominance of a Modernist interpretation of design and its history is both insufficient and inadequate to understand the rich texture and complexity of the design history of this period. His death in that conflict meant that this was a career that lasted barely twenty years; however it comprised a large range of creative endeavours. Although all these facets of Whistler’s career are touched upon, the main focus is on his work in murals and the fields of advertising and commercial design. The thesis goes beyond the remit of a purely biographical stance and places Whistler’s career in context by looking at the contemporary art world in which he worked, and the private, commercial and public commissions he secured. In doing so, it aims to provide a more comprehensive account of Whistler’s achievement than has been afforded in any of the existing literature or biographies. This deeper examination of the artist’s practice has been made possible by considerable amounts of new factual information derived from the Whistler Archive and other archival sources.

    CHAPTER SEVEN The Age of Aquarius Although the idea of a New Age was popularized by Alice Bailey in the early twentieth century, the term had been around at least since the American Rev- olution before it was used self-consciously by Theosophists like her who be- lieved a “master” would come to enlighten humanity and usher us into a new age. The concept picked up relevance as the s counterculture looked to- ward the Age of Aquarius as a utopian future of peace and equality. Move- ments aimed at social and personal transformation that emerged or were given new meaning in the s continue to shape New Age and Neopagan religions. Ideas about the expected new era vary among Neopagans and New Agers, just as they ranged in the s from social revolution to com- munal escape from society. But most agree that it will include a changed dy- namic between men and women, healthy diet, holistic healing practices, and peacefulness. Along with and related to holistic healing and feminist restructuring, en- vironmentalist concerns are seen as key in bringing about the transformation of society. Many New Agers and Neopagans believe that an ecologically vi- able relationship to the natural world will characterize the future age, when humans will live more harmoniously on earth. Some also believe the earth it- self, a living being that has been ill used by humanity, will bring about cata- clysmic changes, while others expect a gradual dawning of enlightened con- sciousness among large numbers of people to usher in the New Age. He spent a year at the University of Edinburgh, and then a year in California on a Fulbright Scholarship teaching in the Department of Art at UCLA and studying the Stowe Papers at the Huntington Library. From 1961-64 he practised as an architect in the Edinburgh office of Sir Robert Matthew, working on the development plan for Queen’s College, Dundee, the competition for St Paul’s Choir School in London, and other projects. In 1964-65 he held a Junior Fellowship in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, DC, returning to England to Newcastle University in 1965, where he was successively Lecturer in Architecture and Reader in the History of Architecture.
