Fish fauna survey on the Upper Maroni (French Guyana) between 2000 and 2002 with some ecological considerations by Yves FERMON* (1), Odile FOSSATI (2) & François J. MEUNIER (1) Abstract. – This paper presents data collected in the Upper Maroni, French Guiana during 5 field missions from 2000 to 2002. A total of 123 known species, classified into 34 families, was captured. Fish communities sampled vary during the year depending on the season. On a daily cycle, fish composition also clearly varies, with a pre- dominance of Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes during the night. Our results give a historical overview of the fish fauna in Upper Maroni 20 years ago. At this time, threatened fishes were already recorded due to overfishing and in certain areas, habitat alteration (turbidity and pollution). Résumé. – Données préliminaires recueillies dans le Haut-Maroni, en Guyane française, entre 2000 à 2002. Ce document présente les données préliminaires recueillies dans le Haut-Maroni, en Guyane française lors © SFI de 5 missions entre 2000 à 2002. Updated checklist of the freshwater and estuarine fishes of French Guiana by Pierre-Yves LE BAIL* (1), Raphaël COVAIN (2, 3, 4), Michel JÉGU (5, 6), Sonia FISCH-MULLER (2), Régis VIGOUROUX (7) & Philippe KEITH (6) ABSTRACT. - The fish fauna of French Guiana is among the best known of South America. Various fieldwork campaigns have been conducted since the publication of the “Atlas des poissons d’eau douce” de Guyane, particularly in poorly sur- veyed areas, leading to the discovery of new taxa, and numerous scientific publications have provided new insights con- cerning this fauna. An updated checklist of the fishes of French Guiana, including all of this new information, is therefore desirable. The list contains 416 species, 367 of which are strictly freshwater. Fish diversity is strongly correlated with catchment size and is, on average, higher in French Guiana than in Suriname. The largest groups are the Characiformes (41%), Siluriformes (33%) and Perciformes (13%). The relative abundance of taxonomic groups differs between catch- ments, probably reflecting the ecological character of the rivers. Eighty seven species, around a quarter of the ichthyofauna, are listed as endemic, but this may be an underestimate because a rather strict definition of endemism is used. The rate of endemism is strongly correlated with catchment size, with some families showing higher than average rates. Comparison of the number of species shared by the different catchments suggests a highly complex pattern of dispersal as a function of the catchment size, topography, and species. The Oyapock River seems to belong to a relatively distinct biogeographic zone influenced by the Amazon basin, but it is not possible to show a broader trend. -

Diversity of the Ancistrini (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Guianas: the Panaque group, a molecular appraisal with descriptions of new species by Sonia FISCH-MULLER* (1), Juan I. MONTOYA-BURGOS (2), Pierre-Yves LE BAIL (3) & Raphaël COVAIN (1, 2, 4) ABSTRACT. - DNA barcoding represents a reliable and powerful way to discriminate and identify species using a stand- ardized region of the mt COI gene. However, a correct identification requires two factors: differentiation and assignment. When one component is lacking, the barcode approach usually fails. To circumvent such problem, we developed a dual approach using a nuclear marker as complementary identifier. A first step consisted in characterizing the first intron of the F-RTN4 gene. This intron was found to be the longest, the most divergent and the most variable of the different introns con- stituting F-RTN4, making it a candidate of choice. This dual approach was applied to a group of closely related armoured catfishes constituting thePanaque group within the Guianas. Three groups were found: Pseudacanthicus, Hemiancistrus, and Peckoltia-Panaqolus, and four new species were highlighted. Within the latter group, Panaqolus koko n. sp. displayed a pattern of mitochondrial introgression with Peckoltia otali n. sp., while Peckoltia capitulata n. sp. and Peckoltia simulata n. sp. revealed cryptic species of Peckoltia oligospila. Hemiancistrus appeared significantly distinct fromPeckoltia . Its type species is redescribed and a neotype is designated to clarify its taxonomic status considering the loss of the holotype. Annotated Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of Suriname
Annotated checklist of the freshwater fishes of Suriname by Jan H. MOL* (1), Richard P. VARI (2), Raphaël COVAIN (3, 4, 5), Philip W. WILLINK (6) & Sonia FISCH-MULLER (3) ABSTRACT. - Data derived from the literature supplemented by examination of specimens in collections show that 481 species of fish live in the fresh and brackish inland waters of Suriname, with 394 of these restricted to fresh waters. These 481 species represent 16 orders and 64 families. Orders with the largest numbers of freshwater species in the Surinamese inland fish fauna are the Siluriformes (157 species), Characiformes (147 species), Perciformes (40 species), Gymnoti- formes (21 species) and Cyprinodontiformes (21 species). At the family level, the Characidae has the greatest number of freshwater species (83 species), followed by the Loricariidae (60 species), the Cichlidae (30 species), the Callichthyidae (23 species), the Heptapteridae (19 species) and the Anostomidae (17 species). Present data indicate that 25 of the species are known solely from locations within Suriname and 89 species solely in Surinamese river systems including the Maro wijne/Mana and Corantijn watersheds which in part extend into French Guiana and Guyana, respectively. Of 481 total spe- cies, 187 (38.9%) were based on type series that originated within Suriname. Continued descriptions of new species from the inland waters of Suriname demonstrate that the present total most likely distinctly underestimates the specieslevel diversity of the fish fauna. In terms of species per square kilometer, the presently documented richness of the Surinamese freshwater fish fauna is comparable to, or even greater than, the richness of fish faunas of several other tropical South American countries. -
