The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a small, naked area on snout tip; by having the abdomen covered with small platelets forming a shield which reaches the lateral mid-ventral plates; by the anterior profile of the head rounded in dorsal view; by the lower lip not reaching the transversal line of the pectoral girdle; and by the presence of 28 or 29 vertebrae. High genetic divergence in mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) further supports the validity of this new species. Our phylogenetic analysis shows a derived subclade in Corumbataia, herein named as the Corumbataia cuestae group, composed of the new species plus C. cuestae, C. tocantinensis, C. britskii, C. liliai, and C. lucianoi.     Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. G. de Brito and Érica P. Caramaschi We report here on an albino specimen of Schizolecis guntheri caught in the rio Bonito in the rio Macaé basin, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis that albinism is more common in fishes with cryptobiotic and/or nocturnal habits is strengthened by additional records of this chromatic anomaly. Lefebvre Masters of Science Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto 2014 Abstract The suckermouth armoured catfishes (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) are a diverse group of predominantly detritivorous fishes inhabiting rivers of South and Central America. Their distinct jaws are specialized for scraping a wide range of substrate. Though it is hypothesized that specialization of loricariid feeding morphology may have played a role in their diversification, little is known about the ecological and evolutionary processes involved. The present study quantifies variation in jaw functional traits and body morphology in a phylogenetic context. Morphological variation was compared to species’ relative position in assemblage isotope space (for both δ13C and δ15N) to test for correlations between diet and feeding morphology. Results show that although jaw functional traits are decoupled from body morphology, both are correlated with δ13C values. Partitioning of terrestrial and aquatic resources can be explained by both jaw functional traits and body morphology, however further partitioning of diet is only attributed to the former. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Nathan K. En este territorio se encuentra la mayor variedad de ambientes acuaticos´ y la mayor cantidad de especies de peces de Argentina, presentando un gran numero´ de endemismos. Sin embargo, los procesos evolutivos causales de esta gran riqueza biologica´ son aun´ poco conocidos y son escasas las hipotesis´ que actualmente dan cuenta de ella. Con el objetivo de comprender el origen de la diversificacion´ de especies dentro de la cuenca del Plata, se han realizado una serie de estudios filogeneticos´ de numerosos individuos de cuatro generos´ de la familia Loricariidae, Hypostomus, Loricariichthys, Rineloricaria y Ancistrus. Las filogenias moleculares basadas en marcadores mitocondriales y nucleares, y sobre datos con- catenados, han sido establecidas para cada grupo. Se utilizaron los arboles´ filogeneticos´ obtenidos para realizar la calibracion´ molecular y la reconstruccion´ de las areas´ ancestrales de cada genero.´ A partir de estos datos y de la distribucion´ actual de las especies, se evaluo´ una hipotesis´ que propone como causa de la diversificacion´ una incursion´ marina en la cuenca del Plata ocurrida hace 15-5 Ma.
