The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a small, naked area on snout tip; by having the abdomen covered with small platelets forming a shield which reaches the lateral mid-ventral plates; by the anterior profile of the head rounded in dorsal view; by the lower lip not reaching the transversal line of the pectoral girdle; and by the presence of 28 or 29 vertebrae. High genetic divergence in mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) further supports the validity of this new species. Our phylogenetic analysis shows a derived subclade in Corumbataia, herein named as the Corumbataia cuestae group, composed of the new species plus C. cuestae, C. tocantinensis, C. britskii, C. liliai, and C. lucianoi. Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. It would have been impossible to review al papers from the beginning of ichthyology, starting with authors as far back as Larrañaga or Jenyns, who worked the preserved fishes Darwin brought back home from his famous trip around the world. The publications of Nion et al. (2002) and Teixera de Mello et al. (2011) seemed to be a good basis where to start from. Both are not perfect for this purpose but still valuable sources and we highly recommend both as literature for the interested reader. Nion et al. (2002) published a list of both, the freshwater and marine species of Uruguay, only permitting the already knowledgeable to make the difference and recognize the freshwater fishes. Also, some time has passed since then and the systematic of this paper is outdated in many parts. Teixero de Mello et al. (2011) recently presented an excellent collection of the 100 most abundant species with all relevant information and colour pictures, allowing an easy approximate identification. The names used there are the ones currently considered valid. Uncountable papers have been published on the freshwater fishes of Uruguay, some with regional or local approaches, others treating with certain groups of fishes. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new Hypoptopomatinae, Corumbataia britskii, is described based on specimens recently collected in a tributary of the upper Rio Paraná basin, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Corumbataia britskii differs from its congeners by having a more depressed head profile (vs. a more rounded head profile in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis), by having a more developed and conspicuous tuft of enlarged odontodes on the tip of the supraoccipital (vs. its reduced condition found in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis), and by heaving a partially enclosed arrector fossae (vs. an almost completely enclosed arrector fossae in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis). Ambrose, Chair Since its initial passage in 1972, the Clean Water Act has attempted to restore and protect our Nation’s waters. The definition of ‘our Nation’s waters’ has undergone periodic debate and scrutiny as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Supreme Court have defined and redefined the standards for determining CWA jurisdiction. The Supreme Court’s most recent set of standards, including the “significant nexus” test, appear to both increase the uncertainty in what is regulated and increase the burden of proof for determining CWA jurisdiction. The Arid West was singled out in the most recent EPA and Corps joint jurisdictional guidance as a problematic area. Focusing on the Arid West, my dissertation evaluates the CWA jurisdiction process from three perspectives: law, policy, and ii science, and explores an understanding of the past, present, and potential future path of CWA jurisdiction. -

Otothyropsis is a genus of Hypoptopomatinae, recently described. Here, we provided the first cytogenetic information ofOtothyropsis . The specimens were collected from córrego Dourado, a small tributary of rio Iguatemi, which flows into rio Paraná. The specimens of Otothyropsis cf. polyodon were analyzed with respect to diploid number, C-Band and Ag-NOR patterns. The diploid number was 54 chromosomes, distributed in 18 metacentric, 28 submetacentric, and 8 subtelocentric chromosomes, with single Ag-NOR and conspicuous heterochromatic blocks on the short and long arms of the 24th pair of chromosomes. Our study highlights the conservation trend of the diploid number (2n=54) and fundamental number (FN = 108) among the species of Hypoptopomatinae. However, the karyotype formula (18m+28sm+8st) seems to be specific to O. cf. polyodon, considering the other Hypoptopomatinae species already analyzed. Hypoptopomatinae é uma subfamília monofilética que inclui 147 espécies distribuídas em 20 gêneros, sendo Otothyropsis um gênero recentemente descrito. Aqui, fornecemos a primeira informação citogenética do gênero Otothyropsis. Espécimes foram coletados no córrego Dourado, um pequeno tributário do rio Iguatemi, o qual deságua no rio Paraná. Espécimes de Otothyropsis cf. polyodon foram analisados em relação ao número diploide e padrões de Banda-C e Ag-NOR. -
