Everett B. Ward, Ph.D. - President

On April 10, 2015, the Saint Augustine’s University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to remove the interim status from Dr. Everett B. Ward’s title and name him the 11th president of Saint Augustine’s University.

Ward is the third alumnus to hold the post in the 150-year history of Saint Augustine’s University.

Dr. Ward was appointed interim president on April 23, 2014. Under his leadership, the university has identified and focused on four academic areas: Mass Communication and Journalism, Criminal Justice, Public Health and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Ward, of Raleigh, North Carolina, is a respected public administrator, political leader, and humanitarian with more than 30 years of national and statewide experiences. Professionally, Ward served as director of the Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU)/Minority Institutions of Higher Education (MIHE) Program for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). In this role, Ward worked with university chancellors and presidents, faculty and staff in the areas of transportation curriculum development, research initiatives and student development.

Ward served on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) HBCU/MIHE Workgroup. This workgroup is responsible for establishing and maintaining partnerships between FHWA and HBCU/MIHE universities.

Prior to his role with the HBCU/MIHE program, Ward served as the NCDOT’s director of Intergovernmental Affairs and special assistant to the deputy secretary for Environment, Planning and Local Government. In both roles, he worked with local elected officials and assisted with the implementation of the department’s Rural Planning Organizations (RPO) Program. In recognition of his service to the department’s diversity efforts, Ward received the NCDOT Extra Mile Award.

As a dedicated servant leader, he serves on several national, regional and statewide boards to advance opportunities for citizens throughout the nation. In 1983, he was named special assistant to the chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party and subsequently was named political director. As a result of his political achievements, Ward made history in 1989 as the first African-American executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party. In addition, Ward has served on and chaired two university advisory boards.

In recognition of his commitment to higher education, he was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of Saint Augustine’s College. From 2009-2011, Everett was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Saint Augustine’s College, his family’s beloved alma mater.

Ward continued his family’s tradition by receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Augustine’s College. He also earned a Master of Arts degree from North Carolina State University (NCSU). While a student at NCSU, he was invited by the Taiwanese government to study the political, educational and cultural institutions of the Republic of China (Taiwan). In recognition of his academic and humanitarian achievements, Ward received the Steve Grissom Humanitarian Award from NCSU. He maintains his connection with NCSU by serving as a visiting lecturer in the Department of History.

In 2013, Ward earned a Ph.D. in leadership studies from North Carolina A&T State University’s School of Education. As a result of his academic achievements, he was a North Carolina A&T State University Wardham Scholar and a member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Golden Key International Honour Society. He was a contributing writer to the publication, Lead the Way: Principles and Practices in Community and Civic Engagement. His research focus includes African American elected leadership, African-American history, civic engagement and leadership development.

George Williams - Director of Athletics

George Williams has built a national track & field power at Saint Augustine’s University and an international reputation as a head coach during his illustrious 41-year coaching career at his alma mater.

Under Williams’ brilliant guidance, Saint Augustine’s University has won 39 NCAA Division II national track and field championships including the last five men’s outdoor track and field titles. The latest victory occurred during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in Bradenton, Fla., on May 25- 27, 2017. Heading into the last event behind by two points, the Falcons won the 4x400 relay to win the title. The Falcons scored 58 points to beat Lincoln University (52 points), Ashland University (50 points) and Tiffin University (50 points).

Over his outstanding coaching career which began in 1976, Williams has won the most NCAA track & field championships as a coach, regardless of division, the most NCAA track & field championships at one school as a coach and the most NCAA Division II track & field championships as a coach. He is third in the NCAA with the most championships regardless of the sport.

Williams has coached over 40 Olympians, including three gold medalists. He has been the recipient of more than 150 track & field coach of the year honors, including the 2017 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Award, 2016 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Award, the 2015 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Award, the 2014 NCAA Division II National Indoor and Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Awards and the 2013 NCAA Division II National Indoor and Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Awards by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The legendary coach was also selected the 2014 CaptainU Indoor Track & Field Winter Coach of the Year. The legendary coach has also won numerous CIAA coaching awards, the latest being the 2016 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year award. He was also named 2014 CIAA Athletic Director of the Year. Under his leadership, the Falcons have amassed over 150 CIAA track and field and cross country conference championships. Additionally, his scholarship student-athletes have a 95 percent graduation rate.

Williams was the head coach of the 2004 U.S. Men’s Olympic Track and Field Team in Athens, Greece, and he also served as assistant coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team in Atlanta, Ga., where each athlete he was responsible for won a gold medal. He was the U.S. men’s head coach at the 1999 World Outdoor Championships in Seville, Spain, the 1993 World Indoor Championships in Toronto, Canada, and the 1992 IAAF World Cup in Havana, Cuba.

In 2016, Williams was a special guest on the nationally-syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show" and was quoted prominently in an ESPN.com article about participants from historically black colleges and universities in the Rio Olympics. In August 2016, an exhibit honoring Williams was displayed at the City of Raleigh (N.C.) Museum.

In addition to being the track and field and cross country head coach, Williams is also the athletic director at Saint Augustine’s University. A faithful Falcon, Williams has served his alma mater (graduated 1965) in a variety of roles since 1968 including director of alumni affairs, admissions counselor, director of student activities, head basketball coach and head bowling coach.

MarQus Johnson - Head Coach

MarQus Johnson enters his fourth season as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Saint Augustine’s University (SAU).

Under Johnson’s guidance, the Falcons have produced three All-CIAA student-athletes - Quincy January, Anthony Gaskins and Raheem Jolliffe. January was named CIAA Defensive Player of the Year the past two seasons and CIAA Rookie of the Year in 2015. In 2016, Johnson guided the Falcons to a second-place finish in the CIAA Southern Division and the quarterfinal round of the CIAA Tournament. The Falcons reached the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2010.

The Saint Augustine’s University athletic department officially named Johnson as head men’s basketball coach on July 1, 2014. Johnson was elevated to head coach after two seasons as assistant men’s basketball coach at Saint Augustine’s University from 2012 to 2014. Prior to returning to SAU, Johnson was head coach of the Cary Invasion, a semi-professional basketball team based in Cary, N.C.

Under his guidance, the Invasion was 22-5 in two seasons and won the Continental Basketball League (CBL) regular season and tournament championship. The Invasion was also runner-up in the Tobacco Road Basketball League (TRBL). Before heading to the Cary Invasion, Johnson was previously an assistant coach at Saint Augustine’s University from 2008 to 2010.

Johnson is well-known in the Triangle area. A Knightdale, N.C., native, he was an assistant coach at North Carolina Central University and in addition to Saint Augustine’s University. Johnson has a stellar reputation for developing positive relationships with the student-athletes. He was an assistant coach on the SAU men’s basketball team which captured its second CIAA championship in school history during the 2009-2010 season. That squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned a national top 25 ranking. Before coming to SAU the first time, Johnson was an assistant coach at North Carolina Central and Shaw. At NCCU, seven of Johnson's recruits earned All-CIAA honors including David Young, who was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2004 NBA Draft. At Shaw, Johnson coached one All-CIAA player.

Johnson was a standout basketball player at NCCU from 1996 to 2000 where he was team captain for three consecutive years. A prolific three-point shooter, Johnson helped lead the Eagles to three CIAA division titles. Johnson graduated from NCCU with a B.S. degree in recreational administration in 2000. As a prep player, Johnson starred at East Wake High School in Wendell, N.C., where he was an all-state basketball performer. He is the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,577 points.

Johnson and wife Shanetta are the proud parents of three sons - Jaylen, Jordan and Donovan.

Montel Jones - Assistant Coach

Montel Jones is in his second season as men’s assistant basketball coach at Saint Augustine’s University. Before coming to SAU, Jones held the same position at Virginia State University for two seasons. During his tenure, Virginia State won the CIAA Tournament title in 2016. After advancing to the second round of NCAA Atlantic Region playoffs, the Trojans rounded out the 2015-2016 season with a 24-6 overall record. In his first year at VSU, Jones helped lead the Trojans to a share of the CIAA Northern Division crown.

At VSU, Jones specialized in working with the post players. The Trojans led the league in block shots with Tyrece Little leading the way and becoming CIAA Defensive Player of the Year. In the summer of 2015, Tyrece Little and Alphonso Leary signed contracts to play basketball professionally overseas.

Before joining VSU, Jones was on the University of Mount Olive men’s basketball staff for one year and the Wingate University men’s basketball staff for three years. Mount Olive won the Conference Carolinas regular-season championship when he was there. Wingate won back-to-back South Atlantic Conference titles and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional during Jones' two years as an assistant coach. A Kinston, N.C. native, Jones graduated from Mount Olive in 2008 with a degree in criminal justice. As a freshman, he was part of the Trojans team which won the 2005 NCAA Division II East Regional championship and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight.
