Ward, Ph.D. - President On April 10, 2015, the Saint Augustine’s University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to remove the interim status from Dr. Everett B. Ward’s title and name him the 11th president of Saint Augustine’s University. Ward is the third alumnus to hold the post in the 150-year history of Saint Augustine’s University. Dr. Ward was appointed interim president on April 23, 2014. Under his leadership, the university has identified and focused on four academic areas: Mass Communication and Journalism, Criminal Justice, Public Health and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Ward, of Raleigh, North Carolina, is a respected public administrator, political leader, and humanitarian with more than 30 years of national and statewide experiences. Professionally, Ward served as director of the Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU)/Minority Institutions of Higher Education (MIHE) Program for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). In this role, Ward worked with university chancellors and presidents, faculty and staff in the areas of transportation curriculum development, research initiatives and student development. Ward served on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) HBCU/MIHE Workgroup. This workgroup is responsible for establishing and maintaining partnerships between FHWA and HBCU/MIHE universities. Prior to his role with the HBCU/MIHE program, Ward served as the NCDOT’s director of Intergovernmental Affairs and special assistant to the deputy secretary for Environment, Planning and Local Government. In both roles, he worked with local elected officials and assisted with the implementation of the department’s Rural Planning Organizations (RPO) Program. In recognition of his service to the department’s diversity efforts, Ward received the NCDOT Extra Mile Award. As a dedicated servant leader, he serves on several national, regional and statewide boards to advance opportunities for citizens throughout the nation. Ward is a member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) where he served as co- chairman of the Credentials Committee, vice chairman of the DNC Black Caucus and DNC Rules and By-Laws Committee member. In 1983, he was named special assistant to the chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party and subsequently was named political director. As a result of his political achievements, Ward made history in 1989 as the first African-American executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party. In addition, Ward has served on and chaired two university advisory boards. In recognition of his commitment to higher education, he was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of Saint Augustine’s College. From 2009-2011, Everett was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Saint Augustine’s College, his family’s beloved alma mater. Ward continued his family’s tradition by receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Augustine’s College. He also earned a Master of Arts degree from North Carolina State University (NCSU). While a student at NCSU, he was invited by the Taiwanese government to study the political, educational and cultural institutions of the Republic of China (Taiwan). In recognition of his academic and humanitarian achievements, Ward received the Steve Grissom Humanitarian Award from NCSU. He maintains his connection with NCSU by serving as a visiting lecturer in the Department of History. In 2013, Ward earned a Ph.D. in leadership studies from North Carolina A&T State University’s School of Education. As a result of his academic achievements, he was a North Carolina A&T State University Wardham Scholar and a member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Golden Key International Honour Society. He was a contributing writer to the publication, Lead the Way: Principles and Practices in Community and Civic Engagement. His research focus includes African American elected leadership, African-American history, civic engagement and leadership development. Ward is a lifelong member of Davie Street Presbyterian Church, USA where he serves as a Ruling Elder. In addition to his church activities, he holds membership and leadership positions in such organizations as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity; 100 Black Men, Inc. and the North Carolina State Capital Foundation. Saint Augustine’s University 2017-2018 Preseason Men’s Basketball Guide 2017-2018 Falcons Preseason Basketball Guide George Williams - Director of Athletics George Williams has built a national track & field power at Saint Augustine’s University and an international reputation as a head coach during his illustrious 41-year coaching career at his alma mater. Under Williams’ brilliant guidance, Saint Augustine’s University has won 39 NCAA Division II national track and field championships including the last five men’s outdoor track and field titles. The latest victory occurred during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in Bradenton, Fla., on May 25- 27, 2017. Heading into the last event behind by two points, the Falcons won the 4x400 relay to win the title. The Falcons scored 58 points to beat Lincoln University (52 points), Ashland University (50 points) and Tiffin University (50 points). Over his outstanding coaching career which began in 1976, Williams has won the most NCAA track & field championships as a coach, regardless of division, the most NCAA track & field championships at one school as a coach and the most NCAA Division II track & field championships as a coach. He is third in the NCAA with the most championships regardless of the sport. Williams has coached over 40 Olympians, including three gold medalists. He has been the recipient of more than 150 track & field coach of the year honors, including the 2017 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Award, 2016 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Award, the 2015 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Award, the 2014 NCAA Division II National Indoor and Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Awards and the 2013 NCAA Division II National Indoor and Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year Awards by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The legendary coach was also selected the 2014 CaptainU Indoor Track & Field Winter Coach of the Year. The legendary coach has also won numerous CIAA coaching awards, the latest being the 2016 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year award. He was also named 2014 CIAA Athletic Director of the Year. Under his leadership, the Falcons have amassed over 150 CIAA track and field and cross country conference championships. Additionally, his scholarship student-athletes have a 95 percent graduation rate. Williams was the head coach of the 2004 U.S. Men’s Olympic Track and Field Team in Athens, Greece, and he also served as assistant coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team in Atlanta, Ga., where each athlete he was responsible for won a gold medal. He was the U.S. men’s head coach at the 1999 World Outdoor Championships in Seville, Spain, the 1993 World Indoor Championships in Toronto, Canada, and the 1992 IAAF World Cup in Havana, Cuba. In 2016, Williams was a special guest on the nationally-syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show" and was quoted prominently in an ESPN.com article about participants from historically black colleges and universities in the Rio Olympics.
