Guerrilla urbana (1939-1957) El dia 26 de març de 2005 va morir a Perpinyà l’historiador i militant llibertari Antonio Téllez Solà, nascut a Tarragona el 18 de gener de 1921. Membre de la FIJL des de 1936, combatrà a l’exèrcit republicà fins al febrer de 1939. Amb 18 anys va haver d’exiliar-se a França, on va conèixer els camps de treball i on va lluitar amb el maquis, parti- cipant a l’alliberament de Rodez, i des d'on va participar a la invasió de la Vall d’Aran l'octubre de 1944. Col·labora des de 1944 amb la premsa anarquista, principalment amb les revistes Ruta i Solidaritat Obrera, i en els últims anys amb Polémica. Després de l’assassinat del seu amic José Lluís Facerías, el 30 d’a- gost de 1957 a Barcelona, funda amb altres companys la revista Ata- laya (desembre de 1957 a juliol de 1958). Comença a treballar com a periodista per l’agència France Press. The dissertation starts proposing a conceptual and analytical framework for the study of change along different dimensions of identification (self-categorization, content, salience and intensity). From here, the dissertation focuses on the study of change in the category of national identification in the Catalan context. The Catalan context is argued to be a suitable case study because it has two characteristics which render change in the category of national identification possible. These two characteristics are a center-periphery cleavage and the presence of a demographically important immigration population. The findings of my research are thus generalizable to other contexts which share these two characteristics with Catalonia. The dissertation offers an alternative explanation which complements the decentralization argument, and provides a better account for the periodic changes that are observed when identification with Spain and Catalonia is tracked over time. The dissertation contends that political parties’ mobilization of the center-periphery cleavage drives individual change in national identification. Although the cleavage structures competition between political parties in a permanent way, there are some periods during which a particular policy or issue sharpens conflict between national and regional parties and exacerbates the cleavage.

  • Essays in Anarchism and Religion: Volume II
    Representations of Catholicism in Contemporary Spanish Anarchist-themed Film (1995–2011) Pedro García-Guirao King’s College London This essay explores the portrayal of Catholicism in eight Spanish anarchist-themed films. The first part discusses negative representations of the Catholic religion rehearsed in these films, set as they are mainly in the context of the Spanish Civil War. Among those representations are: the political and economic purpose of the Catholic Church’s control of education in Spain; the breaking of the religious vows of poverty and chastity, and the recourse to praising the vow of obedience when under scrutiny; and the breaking of the seal of the confessional. In the second part, the essay shows that those films also portray a Christianity which can be more solidary, revolutionary and attached to a different idealization of Christ, unlike the Church consisting of high-ranking members of the clergy. This second part also considers the notion of “secularization” and the extent to which anarchism has become an alternative religion in these films. The essay also reflects on the reliability of films as historical sources. Like any work of history, a film must be judged in terms of the knowledge of the past that we already possess.     Anarchism in Spain Pedro García Guirao 2009 Contents References And Suggested Readings ............................ 6 2 It is commonly accepted that the history of Spanish anarchism started in the early nineteenth century with the economist and social reformer Ramón de la Sagra (1798–1871). In 1845, he launched the first anarchist periodical, El Porvenir, which introduced to Spain the ideas of Proud- hon, Fourier, and Saint-Simon. Between 1848 and 1849, de la Sagra and Proudhon founded the Banco Popular. Despite this, the Spanish anarchist movement did not properly get underway until after the International Workingmen’s Association (IWA) meeting in London in 1864, when the supporters of Bakunin sent the Italian Giuseppe Fanelli to Spain. His mission was to estab- lish the Spanish section of the First International (Sección Española de la Primera Internacional), which occurred in 1869. The triumph of Bakunin’s anarchosyndicalist theories was so great that when Pablo Lafargue arrived in Madrid in 1871 with the intention of founding a workers’ polit- ical party, he was told by the Catalan statesman Francisco Pi y Margall that a Marxist political party would never succeed in Spain. Francisco Pi y Margall (1824–1901) was one of the most influential thinkers who contributed to the popularization of anarchism in Spain. After emigrating to France in 1866, he came into irect contact with the theories of Proudhon, which he translated and analyzed in various books. He defended the principle of federalism against centralism and achieved wide popularity among anarchists. After the declaration of the First Spanish Republic in 1873 he became president, but resigned his position after just a week.
