'(()'+,)& The subject of my research pertains to the Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim. As composer and author, I have chosen an interdisciplinary approach, between music and musicology. There is an analysis of his musical language and his musical speech. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, during the period of the big cultural transformations in Brazil, and also in Europe. The main issue is connected to the brazilian popular music and the "modernity" of which Jobim is a representative. He is a composer bound to the brazilian popular music, and will be one of the main actors responsible for the profound evolutionary transformations of this music. My topic is connected with modernity, a specific feature of Jobim, and its impact over popular music. I have therefore analysed Jobim original themes, as well as its arrangements. From this, we have been able to characterize its style, and its influences. I have also chosen an interdisciplinary approach to analyse its musical language. The main interest of this research is that it deals with the erudite music from Europe and Brazil at the end of 19 th century and beginning of 20 th century, with some popular music and the way that they get intertwined. Indeed, the lack of university research work in this direction has motivated my research. Eventually, this musician appears as a key composer of its time, with a large international impact, in addition to his large synthesis capacity. A mes directeurs.

Introduction Considered the “turning point” (Medaglia, 1960, p. 79) in modern popular Brazi- lian music due to the representativeness and importance it reached in the Brazi- lian music scene in the subsequent years, João Gilberto’s LP, Chega de saudade (1959, Odeon, 3073), was released in 1959 and after only a short time received critical and public acclaim. The musicologist Brasil Rocha Brito published an im- portant study on Bossa Nova in 1960 affirming that “never before had a happe- ning in the scope of our popular music scene brought about such an incitement of controversy and polemic” (Brito, 1993, p. 17). Before the Chega de Saudade recording, however, in February of 1958, João Gilberto participated on the LP Can- ção do Amor Demais (Festa, FT 1801), featuring the singer Elizete Cardoso. The recording was considered a sort of presentation recording for Bossa Nova (Bollos, 2010), featuring pieces by Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim, including arrangements by Jobim. On the recording, João Gilberto interpreted two tracks on guitar: “Chega de Saudade” (Jobim/Moraes) and “Outra vez” (Jobim). The groove that would symbolize Bossa Nova was recorded for the first time on this LP with ¹ The first version of this article was published in the Anais do V Simpósio Internacional de Musicologia (Bollos, 2015), in which two versions of “Desafinado” were discussed.

American Music Review The H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLII, Number 2 Spring 2013 Invisible Woman: Vi Redd’s Contributions as a Jazz Saxophonist By Yoko Suzuki, University of Pittsburgh The story of alto saxophonist Vi Redd illustrates yet another way in which women jazz instrumentalists have been excluded from the dominant discourse on jazz history. Although she performed with such jazz greats as Count Basie, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, and Earl Hines, she is rarely discussed in jazz history books except for those focusing specifically on female jazz musicians. One reason for her omission is that jazz historiography has heavily relied on commercially produced recordings. Despite her active and successful career in the 1960s, Redd released only two recordings as a bandleader, in 1962 and 1964. Reviews of these recordings, along with published accounts of her live performances and memories of her fellow musicians illuminate how Redd’s career as a jazz instrumentalist was greatly shaped by the established gender norms of the jazz world. Elvira “Vi” Redd was born in Los Angeles in 1928. Her father, New Orleans drummer Alton Redd, worked with such jazz greats as Kid Ory, Dexter Gordon, and Wardell Gray. Redd began singing in church when she was five, and started on alto saxophone around the age of twelve, when her great aunt gave her a horn and taught her how to play. Around 1948 she formed a band with her first husband, trumpeter Nathaniel Meeks. She played the saxophone and sang, and began performing professionally.

O IMAGINÁRIO DE ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM: REPRESENTAÇÕES E DISCURSOS Patrícia Helena Fuentes Lima A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages (Portuguese). Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: Advisor: Monica Rector Reader: Teresa Chapa Reader: John Chasteen Reader: Fred Clark Reader: Richard Vernon © 2008 Patrícia Helena Fuentes Lima ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT PATRÍCIA HELENA FUENTES LIMA: Antonio Carlos Jobim: representações e discursos (Under the direction of Monica Rector) My aim with the present work is to describe the personal and creative trajectory of this artist that became known to his audience and people as a hero in the mythological sense—an individual that constructs a series of victories and defeats that continues until death, after which he is glorified by his community. Therefore, I approach the narratives that made him famous: the ones produced by the print press as well as those texts that negotiate meaning, memory, domain and identity created by his fans. I will place special emphasis on the fact that his public produced a definitive narrative about his figure, an account imbued with devotion, familiarity and creativity following his death. More specifically, I identify intertwined relations between the Brazilian audience and the media involved with creating the image of Antonio Carlos Jobim. My hypothesis is that Antonio Carlos Jobim’s image was exhaustively associated with the Brazilian musical movement Bossa Nova for ideological reasons. Specially, during a particular moment in Brazilian history—the Juscelino Kubitschek’s years (1955-1961).

Jon Hendricks By Leonard Feather ToJay the world is knocking at Jon Hendricks’ door. Less than two sears ago, it was the other way around. Possessed of a remark able talent, Jon paid heavy dues for many years, earning a bare living playing drums, writing unsuccessful songs, and singing when a gig was available. As anyone can tell you who has studied the records of Lambert- Hendricks-Ross (for most of which Jon supplies the words), he is not merely a lyricist but a poet and a philosopher. During the recent Jazz tor Moderns tour, I got to know Jon well and found in him an e tergizing, 200-volt A.C. personality, with strong and often infuriating views on every subject from Fascism and Communism to astrology and numerology. This automatically meant that the records for his first Blindfold Test, instead of being confined to vocals, had to cover as broad a range as possible. His comments were tape-recorded, as are all inter views for this feature, and he was given no information, either before or during the test, about the records played. of th«» ‘Yeah, Ming the Mercifull' 1, Mel Torme with the Mel-Tones.
