Sri Lanka The Enchanted Isle A Greentours Trip Report 17th February to 7th March 2014 Led by Paul Cardy Trip Report and Systematic Lists written by Paul Cardy Day 0/1 Monday February 17th & Tuesday February 18th Journey to Sri Lanka and to Kandy A rather unusual beginning to the tour this year, as I had been in the north checking out some new areas, and the two different flight arrivals were met by our excellent ground agents. I arrived at the Suisse in Kandy late morning to meet Geoff, Margaret, and Mary and before too long Rees and Carol arrived. Free time followed with lunch available if and when wanted. On the lake in front of the hotel were Indian Cormorants, Little Cormorants, Little and Great Egrets, and Black-crowned Night Herons. Basking on the same log was Indian Softshell Terrapin. Three-spot Grass Yellow, Psyche, and Zebra Blue flew in the hotel gardens, which supported a very large Flying Fox roost. We met up at 3.30 for an afternoon excursion. In three-wheelers we motored around the lake to a small guesthouse, the terrace of which overlooks the good forest of the Udawattakelle Sanctuary. White-bellied Sea Eagle was much in evidence throughout our stay, with two birds in the air over the forest. Yellow-fronted Barbet, Orange Minivets, Oriental White-eyes, Bar-winged Flycatcher Shrike, and Hill Mynas were all seen well. Sri Lanka Hanging Parrots regularly flew over, calling, which would be how we would most often see them during the tour, and Ceylon Swallows were in the air. -

Razafimandimbison, [email protected] Abstract Many monotypic genera with unique apomorphic characters have been difficult to place in the morphology-based classifications of the coffee family (Rubiaceae). We rigorously assessed the subfamilial phylogenetic position and generic status of three enigmatic genera, the Seychellois Glionnetia, the Southeast Asian Jackiopsis, and the Chinese Trailliaedoxa within Rubiaceae, using sequence data of four plastid markers (ndhF, rbcL, rps16, trnTF). The present study provides molecular phylogenetic support for positions of these genera in the subfamily Ixoroideae, and reveals the presence of a basal grade of morphologically distinct, monotypic genera (Crossopteryx, Jackiopsis, Scyphiphora, Trailliaedoxa, and Glionnetia, respectively) in the species-rich Vanguerieae alliance. These five genera may represent sole representatives of their respective lineages and therefore may carry unique genetic information. Their conservation status was assessed, applying the criteria set in IUCN Red List Categories. We consider Glionnetia and Jackiopsis Endangered. Scyphiphora is recognized as Near Threatened despite its extensive range and Crossopteryx as Least Concern. -

Sri Lanka The Enchanted Isle A Greentours Trip Report 18th February to 8th March 2013 Led by Paul Cardy Trip Report and Systematic Lists written by Paul Cardy Day 0/1 Monday February 18th, Tuesday February 19th Journey to Sri Lanka, and to Kandy Both flights arrived on schedule, and Mr Silva was at the airport early in the morning to meet first the group arriving from London, and shortly afterwards me coming from Italy via Abu Dhabi. Once aboard the spacious bus we drove through reasonably quiet streets in the dark although there was already quite a bit of traffic on the road. Once light, very common birds began with House and Jungle Crows; a selection of egrets; Red-vented Bulbul; White-throated Kingfisher; and Rose-ringed Parakeets. We also drove past a very large Flying Fox roost. After about two and a half hours we reached a bustling Kandy, and our hotel, The Suisse. Around the lake were Indian Cormorants, Spot-billed Pelican, Little and Great Egrets, and Black-crowned Night Herons. The staff at the hotel gave a warm welcome and it was impressive that they let us check in so early in the day, although there was a slight wait for some of the rooms. While we waited an excellent buffet breakfast was enjoyed. A Common Evening Brown perched on the walls of the hotel. Then it was time for sleep, and most of us managed a few hours, with lunch optional, and delicious for those who attended. We met up at 3.30 for an afternoon excursion. -

Full Length Research Paper Woody plant species used in urban forestry in West Africa: Case study in Lomé, capital town of Togo Radji Raoufou*, Kokou Kouami and Akpagana Koffi Laboratory of Plant Biology and Ecology, BP 1515 Lomé - Togo. Accepted 13 July, 2019 Many studies have been conducted on the flora of Togo. However, none of them is devoted to the ornamental flora horticulture. This survey aims to establish an inventory of the woody plant species in urban forests of Lomé, the capital town of Togo. It covers the trees planted along the avenues, in the gardens, courtyards, shady trees and trees used as fences for houses or trees at the seaside. In total, 297 plant species belong to 141 genera and 48 families were recorded. They are dominated by 79% of dicotyledonous, 13% of monocotyledonous and 8% of gymnosperms. Families that are best represented in terms of species are those of the Euphorbiaceae, Arecaceae and Acanthaceae. Alien species represent 69% and African species represent 31% out of which 6% are from Togo. According to the current threatening of the natural habitat by human activities, African native plant species could be more useful for ornamental purposes than exotic plants.
