Spring tour dates: 4/25 Austin, 4/26 Woodlands TX, 4/27 Irving TX, 5/1 Tuscaloosa, 5/2 Nashville More to come! Coming up for adds on March 12: Cold War Kids “Can We Hang On?” The Chicago Tribune takes a look at the new Tune-Yards album “On Tune-Yards’ latest album, “I Can Feel you Creep into my Private Life” (4AD), Merrill Garbus unflinchingly interrogates herself. As she pulls apart her contradictions and self-delusions, she calls upon her deepening understanding of dance music — drawing upon rhythms from her past life in Kenya to her current duties as a DJ in Oakland — to keep the air from getting too murky. The merger of a furrowed-brow intellect and hip-freeing rhythm has been a Tune-Yards constant since Garbus made her 2009 bedroom recording, “Bird-Brains.” “I Can Feel you Creep into my Private Life” is both more refined and yet more raw. Garbus is a powerhouse singer, but she’s also exploring more nuanced melodies and phrasing, even as she confronts big subjects: white privilege, cultural appropriation, the end of the world. It never sounds like heavy lifting because the music was built to be blasted through big speakers in a dance club. With bassist Nate Brenner sharing the songwriting and production and Mikaelin Bluespruce, coming off a triumphant collaboration with Solange, doing the mixing, Tune-Yards revels in rhythmic change-ups and unexpected juxtapositions. On “Heart Attack,” a hypnotic piano rhythm unfolds into a matrix of propulsive percussion. Garbus splits the difference between a cry of anguish and one of liberation, her voice hammering like a drum in the chorus, yet also swooning along the song’s edges. The towering “ABC 123” envisions the planet’s “sixth extinc- tion” over a rubbery bass line and typewriter rhythms. In the brutal interrogation of “Colonizer,” Garbus sneers her self-incrimination — “I smell the blood in my voice” — then allows that voice to be swallowed up by the bounding bass and glitchy electro-beats. The mind-body dialogue drives the album until coming to a midpoint rest on “Home,” in which the pulse slows and Garbus’ voice assumes an angelic tone as she sings: “She’s a fool.” The “fool” is the narrator herself, and she’s come to a conclusion: No progress without confrontation, and that includes those who hold themselves blameless while a community or a planet burns.

  • Place and Punk: the Heritage Significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West
Place and Punk: The heritage significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West William Kenneth Smith MA By Research University of York Archaeology May 2017 Abstract Academic institutions and the heritage industry are now actively seeking to understand the wider social, cultural and economic processes which surround the production and consumption of popular music histories. Music is a local creation; it is created through a flux of internal and external influences, and is bound up in questions of economy, networks, art, identity and technology. In the early 1990s the Pacific North West of the United States of America gave birth to what became known as the musical genre of ‘grunge’. It developed into a distinctive genre, presenting a style and sound which propagated within the confines of a specific time and place. As construction sites continue to emerge throughout the Pacific North West, the impact of music still provides an essential contribution to the regions character and culture. Despite this, countercultural pasts are vulnerable; not only to the passage of time but also the processes of development, gentrification and marginalization. This research explores the heritage significance of the Pacific North West punk scene. It presents a historiography of punk and an appraisal of the scholarly discourse surrounding place. This study utilizes artifacts, sites and oral histories to explore countercultural material and memories as well as the form and function of punk. Themes such as geography and environment are enfranchised into the discussion as ethnography and multidisciplinary approaches are applied to make a unique contribution to what is an essential and timely discussion regarding people, culture, heritage and place.

The History of Rock Music - The Nineties The History of Rock Music: 1989-1994 Raves, grunge, post-rock, trip-hop History of Rock Music | 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-75 | 1976-89 | The early 1990s | The late 1990s | The 2000s | Alpha index Musicians of 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-76 | 1977-89 | 1990s in the US | 1990s outside the US | 2000s Back to the main Music page (Copyright © 2009 Piero Scaruffi) Post-rock (These are excerpts from my book "A History of Rock and Dance Music") Louisville's post-rock 1989-92 The single most important regional school at the turn of the decade may well have been the one that came from one of the most unlikely of musical scenes and the one that sold the least records: Kentucky's "post- rock". Louisville's musicians introduced a convoluted, angular, cerebral style, that had little in common with rock'n'roll's hedonistic foundations. Basically, theirs was progressive-rock for an age that did not appreciate emphatic emotions anymore. The origins of this school go back to Squirrel Bait. From their ashes a number of bands were born: guitarist Brian McMahan formed Slint and For Carnation; guitarist David Grubbs formed Bastro, Bitch Magnet, and Gastr Del Sol; vocalist Peter Searcy formed Big Wheel. Slint (101), who also featured drummer Britt Walford, bassist Ethan Buckler and guitarist David Pajo, represented a major shift in musical purpose: they were more intimidating than exciting. The mostly- instrumental music of Tweez (fall 1987 - ? 1989) kept the tension and the neurosis of hardcore but lost the passion and the narrative logic.

ruises onon thethe fruitfruit B A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIRVANA & THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR MUSIC by Gary Vehar From the moment Nirvana’s landmark CD Nevermind was released, the world of rock music has never been the same. I for one will always be thankful that that album came out when it did, slightly over a week before my eighteenth birthday. I was a still-wet-behind-the-ears college freshman, away from home for the first time. Just as my life was changing drastically, so was the culture. Music, politics, fashion and art underwent an enormous change as the 90’s sloughed off the last vestiges of the 80’s. Concealed as I was in the quiet town of Ellensburg, Washington, within the tiny confines of my third-floor door room, it was the change in musical guard that first caught my attention. Friends from Seattle regularly brought over dubbed tapes to share with those of us here in college, and among one batch was an advance tape for a band called Nirvana. Nevermind was already causing excitement before its official release of September 24th, 1991. Leaving my friends for the night, I couldn’t get the songs, the sounds, out of my head. About a week later I was in yet another dorm room, listening to a brutish lout rave about the same album. Even at this early date it was obvious Nirvana was crossing all boundaries, even if the fellow who owned this copy (the real CD, this time) made fun of the over-the-top screams that so captivated me.
