The role of the public library, both as a major force in the educational process and as a social agent which canprovide a dynamic response to rapidly changingneeds of the community, has become of in- creasing concern to librar:r administrators, educators, and planners. New approaches to education involving independentstudy outside of educational institutions, on all academic levels, willmake new demands on library resources. Also, since public libraries are tax-supportedtnstitutions, there is a growing realization of the need torecogPize new responsibilities for a rapidly growing and more diversified userpopulation, as well as to stimulate public library use.

ERIC/CLIS has compiled this bibliography in aneffort to assist the members of the library community who areconcerned with these problems. Although unpolishedit is hoped that this tool will serve as ageneral reference source for those who wish to undertakethe Pr eparatton of critical review articles or substancive state-of-the-art surveys,to fill informational gaps existing in the field andprovide a firmer decision-making base on which the role of the public library canbe developed.

The items listed in the bibliography have beenarranged under broad topics in an effort to categorize the references;each reference has been cited only once. The references were collected by Miss AnneFinnan, and categorized by Alice Billingsley of ERIC/CLIS, withthe assistance of Miss Karen Emmons. .
