1 Peter I of Alexandria Coptic fragment Anthony Alcock The fragment in question was catalogued by É. Amélineau in his Catalogue des Mss coptes (1889) and first published by Carl Schmidt as 'Fragmente einer Schrift des Märtyerbischofes von Alexandrien' in Texte und Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der altchristlichen Literatur 20 (1901) fasc. 4 pp. 50ff. Peter I was the 17th Patriarch of the Egyptian Church from 300 to 311. He had held office for three years before the Great Persecution began. During his patriarchate there was an internal threat to the Church from Arius and Meletius, the former on doctrinal grounds, the latter on ecclesiastical political grounds1 and the external one known as the Diocletianic or Great Persecution, which broke out in 303 and came to an end in 311. Peter spent several of his patriarchal years hiding from the persecution and was finally executed in 311.2 The organization of the text does not make for easy reading, and I have decided to copy it as a continuous horizontally-oriented text, each page followed by the English version, so that anyone who wishes can consult both text and translation with ease. This after all is not a work of scholarship,3 but, I hope, one that will be useful to those with a casual interest in the language and church history. The text is from a 9th cent. White Monastery library codex and is now in Paris, where it bears the inventory number Paris copte 1305 fols. 123ff. NORTHERN CARIBBEAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF RELIGION AND THEOLOGY SUMMARY OF THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHURCH IN SOCIETY: GREEK PHILOSOPHICAL BACKGROUND An Assignment Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Course: THST 660: CHURCH AND SOCIETY by Lascelles James December 2015 Introduction Confrontation in the Near East where Christianity originated was abated by the iron might of the Roman Empire at its zenith in the 1st and 2nd centuries (96 to 180 CE). The religion came to prominence at a time when the Roman peace (Pax Romana) of Caesar Augustus brought a network of roads to the empire and formal religious toleration allowed religions to flourish. Christianity rode this crest of opportunity and its adherents multiplied exponentially. The atmosphere was rich with religious diversity including Judaism, Roman state religion, the mystery cults and the schools of Greek philosophy. It must be noted here that Greek philosophy provided the ideas that steered the minds of Roman citizens of the Empire and shaped their religion. Philip Curtin emphasizes that the growth of the Roman Empire provided an articulating framework for the cultural synthesis that Greek Philosophy generated. 1 This brief, reflective research looks analytically at the impact of Greek philosophy on Christianity from three perspectives. They are: 1) the challenge that it presented to Christianity, 2) the signs of syncretism, and 3) Christian differentiation despite assimilation of aspects of Greek philosophy. Though not exhaustive because of its brevity, the study may help with discussions on the backgrounds of Christianity, and also stimulate an interest in the religion, politics, and history of the Levant in the first century. -

Clement of Alexandria's Methodological Framework
Adam PRYOR Clement of Alexandria’s Methodological Framework and its Relation to the Biblical Virtues in Light of Concepts of Faith, Knowledge, and Gnosis P h i l o s o p h y ’s relation to theology has always been a topic of much debate. From the time of the Pre-Socratics to our current age, philosophers and theologians alike have contested the degree to which these two methodologically similar disciplines are related. In the tract of this long lineage of discussion, Titus Flavius Clemens, better known as Clement of Alexandria, has made a significant contribution. His conception of the relationship between philosophy and theology as taking different paths to a single conception of truth opens the door for a host of theological issues that conflict with some of the dogmatics and doctrines of the Church. More impor- t a n t l y, Clement’s attempt to incorporate philosophical thought as an aggrandizing principle in relation to the Biblical virtues resulted in a set of axiomatic statements and a methodological framework that is inexorably rooted in an anti-ecumenical paradigm, while simultaneously rooting itself in a solely faith-based perspective of Christianity that lays emphasis on the individual’s plight to act upon an ever- increasing understanding of God’s call in this world for each of us. Principles of Clement’s Theology Clement of Alexandria was born c. A.D. 150 to pagan parents. We know very lit- tle about the life of Clement beyond this. We know he had a thirst for knowledge and this led to him doing a great deal of traveling to places like Italy, Palestine and Syria, while searching for a satisfactory instructor. -

Cairo‘s Tahrir Square and the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (KDEC) continued to be the principle focal points up to and including the June 30 uprising some three years later. During this period of massive change in the history of Egypt, the Coptic church realized the need for political action in the face of persecution, and Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church was a focal example of leadership and service in this new Christian activism. For the first time in the history of Christianity in Egypt, Christians ventured out of the sanctuary of their churches to protest against the traditional oppression of government. (CE:2171b-2190a) SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, list of saints used in the Coptic church. [This entry consists of two articles, Editions of the Synaxarion and The List of Saints.] Editions of the Synaxarion This book, which has become a liturgical book, is very important for the history of the Coptic church. It appears in two forms: the recension from Lower Egypt, which is the quasi-official book of the Coptic church from Alexandria to Aswan, and the recension from Upper Egypt. Egypt has long preserved this separation into two Egypts, Upper and Lower, and this division was translated into daily life through different usages, and in particular through different religious books. This book is the result of various endeavors, of which the Synaxarion itself speaks, for it mentions different usages here or there. It poses several questions that we cannot answer with any certainty: Who compiled the Synaxarion, and who was the first to take the initiative? Who made the final revision, and where was it done? It seems evident that the intention was to compile this book for the Coptic church in imitation of the Greek list of saints, and that the author or authors drew their inspiration from that work, for several notices are obviously taken from the Synaxarion called that of Constantinople. The reader may have recourse to several editions or translations, each of which has its advantages and its disadvantages. Let us take them in chronological order. The oldest translation (German) is that of the great German Arabist F. Wüstenfeld, who produced the edition with a German translation of part of al-Maqrizi's Khitat, concerning the Coptic church, under the title Macrizi's Geschichte der Copten (Göttingen, 1845). -

Now Just Where Were We? It has been a long time since we were considering the Church Fathers in Unit 2. This is a “pick up session,” now that we have completed the 14 other sessions of this series on The History of the Early Christian Church. Some may remember that we were giving our attention to the early Church Fathers when the interruption of the Covid19 virus descended upon us, and we found ourselves under stay at home policies. Thanks to our pastor’s leadership ond our well equipped communications equipment and the skill of Pilip Muschke, we were able to be “on line` almost St. Jerome - Translator of Latin Vulgate instanetly. We missed only one session between our live class 4-5th Century and our first on line class. Today, we pick up the session we missed. We had covered two sessions of the three session Unit 2. The first of these sessions was on The Apostolic Fathers. These were those who had either known our Lord or known those who did. Among those would have been the former disciples of Jesus or the early first generation apostles. These were the primary sources to whom the ministry of our Lord was “handed off.” Saint Paul was among them. -

St. Demiana loved to pray and read the holy books in the seclusion of her room.2 Fleeing from the World: When Saint Demiana turned 15, her father wanted her to marry one Coptic orthodox icon of his noble friends, however, she refused to do so. 254 THE JOURNAL OF THEOLOGICAL STUDIES THE QUARTODECIMAN QUESTION. AN immense cloud of dust has been raised over the Paschal Question. Or rather, over the Paschal Questions : for one source of the bewilder ment has been the treatment of distinct questions as though they were one and the same. It is perhaps still necessary to repeat that in the ante-Nicene period there were at least three distinct Paschal Questions. Of the four familiar incidents-the conversation between St Polycarp and Anicetus of Rome in the middle of the 2nd cent. (Eus. H. E. iv 14 § 1, v 24 § 16 sq.); the discussion at Laodicea in the sixties of the century (ib. iv 26 § 3, vi 13 § 9); the serious dispute between the Asian and some neighbouring churches on the one side and the rest of the Church on the other in the last decade of the 2nd cent. (ib. v 23- 25); and the divergences in usage which the Nicene Council discussed and attempted to reconcile (Eus. V. C. iii 14, 18-20; Socr. H. E. i g) 1 -of these incidents, only the first and the third are concerned with the same question, and even that has lately been disputed. This is the 'Quartodeciman Question', the question, that is, as between the Asian observance of the Pascha on the 14th day of the first moon of the year, and the observance of it on the following Sunday, whioh was the usa,ge of the rest of the Church ; and it is this question only with which the present Note is concerned.
