It’s a sudden opening, but I’ll just launch right away into explaining this book (). People dreaming of becoming models! People dreaming of becoming idols! People with an interest in the world of television! People interested in what it’s like in the country! People who want to improve their physical constitution! People with an interest in health! People who have things they want to do but just can’t take the first step forward! People who want to know about the life of Koharu Kusumi from birth to the present! ese kinds of readers should read this book . I think! When I started writing this book, I was years old, but now, having finished writing it, I’ve turned . Because of that, the parts I wrote when I was came out of the -year-old Koharu, and the parts I wrote aer becoming are a product of the -year-old Koharu, so each piece of writing reflects the feelings I had at that point in time. My reason for just leaving everything unchanged is that I wanted to deliver it through the words of the real Koharu. e stories from when I was lile I wrote based on what I heard from my family, and I wrote while consulting with people at the office as well. I think there are some parts that are hard to read, but I thought, wouldn’t writing in Koharu’s own words best convey what I wanted to say?—so from the sentence writing style to the composition, to the paragraphs, to the arrangement of the table of contents, to the choice of words, everything was my own decision, and up through the last paragraph, was completed with my participation in the revision process. Since everything from the start to the end is wrien in Koharu’s own words, in- cluding some idiosyncratic Koharuisms that you won’t see in any regular book, I think everyone might find some parts a pain to read. I’d be happy if you think to yourself, “is is definitely Koharu’s book!” and have fun reading it. is is nonfiction of course (). F While writing this foreword, I was thinking . for a foreword, how much should I write, I wonder? Whenever I start to write something, I seem to keep going on forever, so I’ll go ahead and stop around here . (). at said, this is a book Koharu Kusumi wrote! So please knock on this door and look. Of course, this is designated an unrestricted-entry-and-exit zone. Please

  • Liner Notes: Aesthetics of Capitalism and Resistance in Contemporary
LINER NOTES: AESTHETICS OF CAPITALISM AND RESISTANCE IN CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE MUSIC A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Jillian Marshall December 2018 © 2018, Jillian Marshall LINER NOTES: AESTHETICS OF CAPITALISM AND RESISTANCE IN CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE MUSIC Jillian Marshall, Ph.D. Cornell University 2018 This dissertation hypothesizes that capitalism can be understood as an aesthetic through an examination and comparison of three music life worlds in contemporary Japan: traditional, popular, and underground. Through ethnographic fieldwork-based immersion in each musical world for nearly four years, the research presented here concludes that capitalism’s alienating aesthetic is naturally counteracted by aesthetics of community-based resistance, which blur and re-organize the generic boundaries typically associated with these three musics. By conceptualizing capitalism -- and socio-economics on whole – as an aesthetic, this dissertation ultimately claims an activist stance, showing by way of these rather dramatic case studies the self-destructive nature of capitalistic enterprise, and its effects on musical styles and performance, as well as community and identity in Japan and beyond. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Prior to undertaking doctoral studies in Musicology at Cornell in 2011, Jillian Marshall studied East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, where she graduated with double honors. Jillian has also studied with other institutions, notably Princeton University through the Princeton in Beijing Program (PiB, 2007), and Columbia University through the Kyoto Consortium of Japanese Studies at Doshisha University (KCJS, 2012). Her interest in the music of Japan was piqued during her initial two-year tenure in the country, when she worked as a middle school English teacher in a rural fishing village.

  • Lived Experiences of “Beautiful” Women: a Postmodern Feminist Exploration of Beauty Discourse and Identity
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Michelle Marie for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Design and Human Environment presented on June 9, 2016. Title: Lived Experiences of “Beautiful” Women: A Postmodern Feminist Exploration of Beauty Discourse and Identity Abstract Approved: Brigitte G. Cluver While a great deal is known about the benefits of being culturally identified as attractive, very little is known about the lived experiences of beautiful women. In this study, 21 adult women who are currently employed as models or represented by modeling agencies participated in open-ended interviews, and their responses were analyzed using a Foucauldian and postmodern feminist theoretical framework. Findings generally support and complicate the conclusions of extant research: Beautiful women are shown to have a complex definition of beauty, an awareness of being understood by society as beautiful, positive and negative experiences that are associated with being beautiful, feelings of confidence, and opportunities for creativity within modeling work. Interpretation of findings via a Foucauldian and postmodern feminist framework reveals ways in which power, knowledge, and subjectivation combine in participants’ lived experiences and problematizes beauty discourse and the identities of “beautiful” women subjects. Power deploys discourses of “beauty” and “modeling” and employs multiple strategies that conceal and simultaneously reinforce their existence. Knowledge is present in participants’ lives in several ways, and is applied by participants in service of power and to construct their identities as “beautiful” subjects. Subjectivation, or participants’ development of a relationship to themselves, occurs physically via beauty practices and mentally via the choices they make in how they view themselves and represent themselves to others.

  • Fall Issue of Pacific Bridge, the “Politics Issue,”
p page 1 acificibridge page 1 The Politics Issue Alumni Adventures in Japanese Politics We didn’t go over there to run for office or start a revolution, but sometimes politics had a way of finding us. Here are some of the best stories from fellow alums. “Like Arnold Schwarzenegger” On JET, I lived in a very small town in a very small prefecture, Nichinan-cho in Tottori-ken. One of those places where everybody knows everybody, and as the resident gaijin, everybody knew me. I knew the mayor, the council members, and all of the other politicians in town (along with the shop owners, garbage men, policemen, and little old ladies in their gardens). It wasn’t until I returned to America, however, that I really learned how close-knit Tottori-ken really is. A few years ago, I was at the JETAA Welcome Back Reception chatting with some JET alums new and old, when one of the staff pulled me over and said, “Kurara-san, you used to live in Tottori, right? There is someone else here from Tottori, you should meet him.” So I wandered over to this newcomer to say some “Yoroshikus.” The Japanese man I introduced myself to looked vaguely familiar, but I didn’t really pay much attention to it (he was, after all, another Japanese man in a suit; perhaps they were starting to blend together in my mind?). So I said I used to live in Nichinan-cho, expecting him to say “doko?” Which is the response I typically get when I mention my lovely town.
