Dictionary.com defines history as “a past notable for its important, unusual, or interest- ing events”. This perfectly describes historic Lunken Airport. No, it isn’t O’Hare, Kennedy, or LAX, but the role it has played for nearly one hundred years cannot be overlooked, or more importantly, it should not be forgotten. Lunken is located in the historic Columbia Tusculum neigh- borhood, which is notable in its own right as the first settlement in Cincinnati. In 1788, Hezekial Stites landed here at the con- fluence of the Little Miami River and the Ohio River. A veteran of the just-ended American Revolutionary War, he and others in his party were the first non-Native Americans to set foot on land in this region. He and many of these early settlers are buried just across the street from Lunken in the Pioneer Cem- etery and his gravestone touts him as “Pioneer of the West who landed in Columbia in 1788… In perilous times he ventured forth to tame the forest and till the earth.” A second cemetery, lost to the ravages of time but estimated to be just a couple hun- dred yards south, has an unmarked grave for William Brown, a sergeant in the American Revolution and the first recipient of a Purple Heart. The legend is that Martha Washington made the ribbon for the medal. This is a truly historic area and it seems appropriate that from this early settlement an airport of equally Photo courtesy cincinnati-transit.net. historic magnitude arose a century and a half later.
