  • Ceredigion Welsh District Council Elections Results 1973-1991
Ceredigion Welsh District Council Elections Results 1973-1991 Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher The Elections Centre Plymouth University The information contained in this report has been obtained from a number of sources. Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties. The grey line is the share obtained by Independent candidates while the purple line groups together the vote shares for all other parties. Rear cover: the top graph shows the percentage share of council seats for the main parties as well as those won by Independents and other parties. The lines take account of any by- election changes (but not those resulting from elected councillors switching party allegiance) as well as the transfers of seats during the main round of local election.

NB This publication was originally issued in the A4 format then used by the society. It has now been digitised and reformatted at A5. This has changed the original pagination of articles, which is given in square brackets. ISSN 0309-2199 GEORGE GREEN, ENGINEER & ENTREPRENEUR, 1824 - 1895 S.J.S. Hughes SYNOPSIS Mining districts such as Devon, Cornwall and North Wales have called into being manufacturing industries which, as part of the mining infrastructure, supplied commodities and services. The supply of foundry products was an integral part of this, and names like Perran, Haveys, Sandicroft and others are well known to the mining historian. To many, however, the name of George Green, whose Cambrian Foundry supplied mining equipment to mines in the hinterland of Aberystwyth and subsequently throughout the world, has been largely – and undeservedly – forgotten. This neglect is possibly due to an almost complete absence of records on the man, his business and family. The former were destroyed by fire in 1908. A clever and innovative engineer, Green was responsible for many interesting items of machinery which he manufactured at his works, and was also an adventurer in some of the mines which used them. From the scant references which do remain, the author has managed to assemble a fascinating cameo of this remarkable engineer and entrepreneur.

  • Post Medieval and Modern
A Research Framework for the Archaeology of Wales Select Bibliography, Southwest Wales Post Medieval and Modern A Research Framework for the Archaeology of Wales Southwest Wales – Post Medieval, bibliography 22/12/2003 This list is drawn from a number of sources : a small number derive from the original audit by Cambria Archaeology; more from a trawl through Ceredigion County Library, Aberystwyth; some from published bibliographies, but most from an incomplete search of current periodical literature. The compiler does not claim to have run all these to earth at first hand, so some page references, the names of publishers and some places of publication are missing. It should be noted that not all apparently authoritative published bibliographies - on the web and off it - are necessarily as complete as might be expected. Some may be biased by the interests or prejudices of their compilers. The Website on Mining Bilbiography is a good example. It excludes certain materials on processing and hydrology, and omits virtually everything the present writer has written on dating mines! The present writer regrets if his equally subjective selection inadvertently omits anything significant to the interests of its readers, but welcomes notification of it.
