    DYFED INVERTEBRATE GROUP NEWSLETTER N°. 2 June 1986 We have been gratified by the reception that the formation of the Dyfed Invertebrate Group has received amongst entomologists nationwide and there are now almost one hundred subscribers to the Newsletter. This is a sound base upon which to establish our contribution to invertebrate conservation in west Wales and the specialists involved cover a very wide range of groups. With the summer now upon us (or so I'm reliably informed) the impetus should be there for us all to get out 'in the field' and add to our knowledge of the distribution and ecological requirements of the county fauna. Do remember to send in your records to the relevant county recorders and keep us informed of any interesting observations. The Newsletter is here to ensure that significant records and accounts of methodical surveys find their way in to print. We would welcome more feed-back from subscribers, both in the form of articles for the Newsletter and suggestions for the improvement of DIG - do drop us a line from time to time and tell us how your invertebrate work is progressing. Which brings me to the thorny problem of subscriptions! The DIG Newsletter is produced entirely through the kindness of NCC Dyfed-Powys in allowing us access to secretarial and photo-copying facilities. However, we would appreciate assistance with postage and hence the subscription for 1986 will be four First Class Stamps. Please send your 'subscription' to the Editor during the course of the summer.     Leave the woods and skirt the field below Dolgamfa farm. Cross the stile on the top left hand corner of the field and follow the lane below the trees. Leave this field climbing more steeply up to a gateway beside a ruin. Follow the track up to the left and join the track leading down to Dolgamfa. Continue until you reach the tarmac road at Llwynteifi Isaf farm. Straight ahead is Spirit of the Miners Walks Devil€s Bridge, on the other side of the gorge and behind you is the summit of Pumlumon. The road turns to the right and just after the second gateway, by a ruin on your right, take a stile in the hedgebank to your left. Drop down to a footbridge and climb the bank ahead to a lane leading to Penrhiw farm. Turn left along a lane, passing by a well in the stone wall on your right, to meet a junction. Turn right here to drop steeply down into Cwm Rheidol. Entering the woodland, on your left there is a stand of fine Scots pine trees. These trees have an association with rights of way. Overnight stops for animals to rest and feed were often marked by small groups of them and they were often planted along difficult sections of routes. To the right a fine view unfolds of Cwm Rheidol with the track of the steam railway directly opposite passing underneath Tynycastell. This steep path is much shorter than the signposted Ä Janet Baxter Borth to Devil€s bridge path -though both lead to the same point.

    AN UNINTENDED COMMUNITY IN THE WELSH HINTERLAND Networks, Lifestyles, Relationships David Frost 2 An Unintended Community in the Welsh Hinterland - Networks, Lifestyles, Relationships Starting in the late 1970s, not long after I joined the urban exodus that saw significant inward migration to rural Wales, I kept a file of notes and observations on the situation and experiences of those around me who had moved to West Wales. Thirty years on, at the turn of the millennium, I made a summary and in this paper I discuss the main social trends that I identified at the time, adding additional and more recent material. Migration and social networks My earliest observation was that the migrants had come from many different, overwhelmingly urban, places and I pondered the reasons why they had moved to Wales; and whether, having assembled themselves in the hinterlands of Machynlleth, Aberystwyth, Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan, they had become a community, albeit a loose-knit and spatially dispersed one. One reason for their migration seemed to be the persistence of the rural idyll, a romantic yearning for an idealised countryside, which I examined in my article for the Organic Grower Magazine, “Mud on the Tracks” (2016). Part of the rural idyll is the notion of community, and many writers have contrasted the community life of rural society with the supposedly atomised life of urban society. My search of the literature on rural communities led me to the conclusion however, that our 1970s migration to West Wales was a variant of what sociologists call intentional communities, which are also known as utopian communities.

Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties.
