4 Definitions Age-specific fertility rate The age-specific fertility rate is the number of births to mothers of a given age group proportional to the average female population of that age group. See also General fertil- ity rate. Average permanent population The average permanent population is defined as the average of the permanent popula- tion of the reference year and that of the previous year. Birth surplus The birth surplus is calculated from the number of live births minus the number of deaths in the same year. Cause of death The cause of death is defined as the disease or injury which started the train (sequence) of morbid (disease-related) events which led directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury. Country of birth The country of birth is determined by the place where the newborn was delivered. Death A death is the permanent disappearance of all vital functions without possibility of re- suscitation at any time after a live birth has taken place; this definition therefore ex- cludes foetal deaths (stillbirths). Dissolved partnership Two persons of the same sex may dissolve their registered partnership at the Civil Regis- try Office. The Vital Statistics only include registered partnerships that were registered at the Liechtenstein Civil Registry Office and where at least one of the partners lived in Liechtenstein at the time of dissolution. Divorce A divorce is the act by which the legal relationship between two persons is dissolved. See also Note: Marriages and divorces. Divorcing person Persons that are at the time of divorce part of the permanent population. See also Note: Marriages and divorces. Divorce rate The divorce rate is defined as the number of male divorcing persons per male marrying person in the same year. See also Note: Marriages and divorces. Fertility See Age-specific fertility rate.

No. Item Description First marriage Marriage of a person that was single before the marriage. General fertility rate The general fertility rate is the number of live births per 1 000 women of the average female population in childbearing age. In the Vital Statistics, the childbearing age is de- fined as the age between 15 and 49. Gross reproduction rate The gross reproduction rate is defined as the mean number of daughters that would be born to a woman during her lifetime, if she were to spend her childbearing years con- forming to the age-specific fertility rates that have been measured in a given year. It is assumed that the woman survives all of her childbearing years. The gross reproduction rate is equal to the fertility rate multiplied with the share of female live births. Live births A live birth is the birth of a child who showed any sign of life; the number of live births refers to the number of births excluding stillbirths. The Vital Statistics include a live birth if the mother is part of the permanent or non-permanent population at the time of childbirth, or if the newborn is part of the permanent or non-permanent population at the time of birth. Marriage A marriage is the act by which the legal relationship between two persons is formed. See also Note: Marriages and divorces. Marrying person Persons that are at the time of marriage part of the permanent population. See also Note: Marriages and divorces. Mortality rate The mortality rate is the number of deaths per 1 000 persons of the average permanent population. Natural population growth See Birth surplus. Non‐permanent population The non‐permanent population consists of persons who are likely only temporarily resi- dent in Liechtenstein. These are: • Short‐term residents, who live at the due day less than 12 months in Liechtenstein • Asylum‐seekers • Provisionally admitted foreign nationals, who live at the due day less than 12 months in Liechtenstein • People in need of protection Permanent population The permanent population consists of persons who live at the due day 12 months or longer in Liechtenstein or who intend to stay 12 months or longer in Liechtenstein. These are: • Liechtenstein nationals living in Liechtenstein • Settled foreign nationals • Permanent residents • One‐year residents • Customs officers and family members • Short‐term residents, who live at the due day 12 months or longer in Liechtenstein • Provisionally admitted foreign nationals, who live at the due day 12 months or longer in Liechtenstein

No. Item Description Population Since 1999 the definition regarding the permanent population and the non-permanent population is applied. In accordance with Regulation (EU) No 1260/2013 on European demographic statistics the permanent population of a country consists of nationals and foreign nationals having their usual residence in the Member State at the reference time for a continuous period of at least 12 months or with the intention of staying there for at least 12 months. See also Permanent population and Non-permanent population. Registered partnership Two persons of the same sex may register their partnership at the Civil Registry Office. They thereby establish a legal relationship with mutual rights and obligations. The Vital Statistics only include registered partnerships that were registered at the Liechtenstein Civil Registry Office and where at least one of partners lived in Liechtenstein at the time of registration. The Registered Partnership Law of March 16 2011, Liechtenstein Law Gazette 2011 No. 350 stipulates the right to register the partnership as of September 1, 2011, where a subsequent registration for past years is also possible. Total fertility rate The total fertility rate is defined as the mean number of children that would be born to a woman during her lifetime, if she were to spend her childbearing years conforming to the age-specific fertility rates that have been measured in a given year. It is assumed that the woman survives all of her childbearing years. The birth rate shows whether the so-called replacement level of fertility is reached. In industrialised countries, this value must be 2.1 in order to replace a pair of parents in the next generation.

5 Statistical unit As statistical unit the live births of the permanent population and the non-permanent pop- ulation, the deaths, marriages, marrying persons, divorces, divorcing persons of the per- manent population are used. 6 Statistical popula- The statistical population are all persons of the permanent population and the non- tion permanent population. 7 Documentation Further information about methods and quality can be found in the publication Zi- vilstandsstistik in the chapter C Methodik und Qualität (available in German only). http://www.llv.li/#/11447/zivilstandsstatistik 8 Data revision No data revision was conducted. 9 Note Marriages and divorces The appropriate representation of the number of marriages and divorces in Liechten- stein poses a challenge. Due to its small size, the share of marriages and divorces, where one of the partners does not reside in the country, is comparatively higher than in larger countries. Counting all marriages, where one of partners resides in Liechtenstein, would lead to much higher numbers than when counting only the resident population. Follow- ing recommendations of Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, to de- termine the number of marriages per 1 000 inhabitants and the number of divorces per 100 marriages, only marriages and divorces are counted where the husband is part of the permanent population. This method reduces double counting of marriages and di- vorces in the international context. For the reasons mentioned, the divorce rate of Liechtenstein is only to a limited extent comparable with other countries. Marriages and divorces only refer to persons which are part of the permanent popula- tion. If one of the spouses is living abroad at the time of marriage/divorce, he or she will not be part of the Vital Statistics. Therefore, different values of men and women marry- ing/divorcing are observed.
