The Foundation also expanded delivery of mentoring programs including ParentsNext which aims to assist parents with young children to identify their education and employment goals. 2017-2018 also saw the commencement of ReSet which uses an integrated suite of tailored, culturally competent and evidence-based reintegration services to provide support to men and women after leaving prison, so that they can have a new beginning that is meaningful and breaks the cycle of offending. 2 Wirrpanda Foundation Board Members 2017/18 Alan Cransberg Trevor Nisbett Richard Godfrey Michael McNulty David Wirrpanda CHAIRMAN DEPUTY CHAIRMAN TREASURER DIRECTOR DIRECTOR It gives me great pleasure to again be recapping another wonderful year for the Wirrpanda Foundation. 2017-2018 was an exciting period in which we enjoyed continued growth, whilst also streamlining our service delivery as we work to lead the provision of education and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Key delivery continued across existing programs, including Plan 2day 4 2morrow™ (P242), Deadly Sista Girlz™, Wirra Schools RSAS, Wickham Wirra Club, Moorditj Ngoorndiak, Bunuru, Full Circle Partnership, the Vocational Training and Employment Centre (VTEC), Transition to Work and Bidi Waalitj. The 2017-2018 period also saw the introduction of new programs in ParentsNext and ReSet. An Australian Government Initiative delivered in partnership with Stirling Skills Training, ParentsNext aims to assist parents with young children to identify their education and employment goals and develop a pathway to achieve those goals. Supported by the WA Department of Justice, ReSet provides support to men and women after leaving prison, so that they can have a meaningful new beginning and works to break the cycle of offending. ReSet service is delivered by a consortium of four agencies, comprising the Foundation, Centrecare, St. Bartholomew’s House, and led by Wungening Aboriginal Corporation. We look forward to our upcoming move to our new facility alongside the West Coast Eagles at Lathlain Park. To have a facility that will be purpose-built for the Foundation and our needs is an incredible opportunity, one which will afford us the ability to continue to empower our people and continued growth. The West Coast Eagles provide financial, IT, insurance and media services under a shared service agreement that ensure the Foundation’s administration and staffing costs are kept to a minimum.

The Foundation is a dream come true for me. I made my debut with the West Coast Eagles in Round 5 of the 1996 AFL Season, at the age of 16 years, and played in the 2006 premiership team. My first passion isn’t sport however, its community work in helping to improve the lives of young Indigenous Australians. But using sport as a magnet to attract our young Aboriginal people into positive activities to improve their education and wellbeing is an amazing tool that must be utilised.     SPECIAL AIR SERVICE RESOURCES FUND 5 SAS RESOURCES FUND HISTORY 1996-2016 November 2016 SPECIAL AIR SERVICE RESOURCES FUND 6 FOREWORD If there was one single glimmer of light to emerge from the ashes of the 1996 Blackhawk disaster, it would certainly be the creation of the Special Air Service Resources Fund. While the unit was understandably reeling from its worst ever loss, and rightfully focused on rebuilding the short notice Counter Terrorism capability that Australia relies upon it to provide, a selfless group of individuals coalesced, unprompted, and set about creating this amazing institution. In doing so, they reacted swiftly, decisively and generously; and have continued to ever since. The 20 years since the Blackhawk tragedy represents about a “generation” within the Special Air Service Regiment; the unit’s most senior soldiers today were young troopers or lance corporals back in 1996 when the accident occurred. Sadly, during that generation, almost every single member of the unit has experienced the loss of a friend in training or combat. But on each occasion, in the midst of their grief, our men and women have also seen the Fund immediately step into action. As a result, we have witnessed the children of our fallen mates grow up, being cared for by the Fund. No one can replace a lost father or husband but through its financial support and empathy, the Fund provides a backbone of solace in this darkest of situations. By virtue of this fact, every time our soldiers step forward into the breach, they do so confident in the knowledge that should they fall in the service of this country, the Fund has their back, and will continue to take care of that which is most precious to them.

We have grown substantially over the last 10 years and continue to focus on education, employment and business opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. We do this by working together to empower and build capacity amongst individuals, their families and their communities. We have established a number of successful programs in Perth, regional Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, and Queensland. The Wirrpanda Foundation has now reached over 35,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people nationally. We continue to prioritise employing strong and passionate Indigenous mentors to deliver our programs with 101 staff employed nationally, 74% of whom are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The Foundation’s suite of culturally appropriate programs is designed and delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our programs increase the retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in school; assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander jobseekers into sustainable meaningful employment or further vocational training and/or study; work to sustain employment opportunities through cross-cultural training and individualised support for employers; provide support and mentoring to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in touch with the youth justice system; cultivate competitive, sustainable and resilient Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses; provide employment services to assist in the reintegration of individuals back into the community after leaving prison; and improve the overall health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
