PINEAPPLE HOTEL CUP E-FOOTY RECORD ROUND 8 E-Footy RECORD 24th May 2008 Issue 8 Editorial with Marty King AFL celebrates Indigenous Round The AFL this weekend will celebrate Indigenous Round and the unique contribution of members of the Indigenous community have made to Australian football. It’s a wonderful event on the football calendar and focuses on what has become a key element in the growth and development of our game right throughout the country. There are now 87,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people participating in Australian football programs and a record 72 Indigenous players currently on AFL club lists. Moreover, the educational programs that are part of football’s relationship with Indigenous peo- ple have been truly outstanding – and none more so than those in Queensland. It was fantastic this week to see the work of AFL Cape York recognized via nomination for a reconciliation award, that will be presented shortly at Parliament House. We’ll celebrate Indigenous Round in fi ne style at on Sunday when 96 children from Cherbourg, Woorabinda, Palm Island, Badu Island, Mornington Island, Aurukun, Lockhart River and Kowanyama will be fl own to Brisbane for the game against St.Kilda. Aged 10 and 11, the children are all members of the Qantas AFL KickStart program and will participate in the halftime grid games. Sunday will also see Aunty Valda Coolwell from the Brisbane Council of Elders perform a ‘Wel- come to Country’ ceremony, as will be the practice at each of the eight AFL games in Round 9.

She will acknowledge the relationship between AFL and Aboriginal people, the role AFL plays in promoting indigenous sportsman, and will acknowledge Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for his apology to the Stolen Generation and his commitment to reconciliation. Gilbert McAdam, former Brisbane and St.Kilda player, will be the on-ground MC for the cer- emony.

And in the curtain-raisers, an Indigenous invitational team of girls will play Narrangba College, and Djarragun College in Cairns will play St Peters College, coached by ex-Lions ace Chris Johnson.

It’ll be a fantastic day as AFL celebrates the enormous role Indigenous people play in our great game.
