Eléments financiers RAPPORT DU DIRECTEUR RAPPORT DU DIRECTEUR L’EFEO – MISSIONS DE La mission scientifique de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient est L’ÉTABLISSEMENT l’étude des grandes civilisations classiques de l’Asie, au travers des sciences humaines et sociales avec une ouverture importante sur le monde contemporain. L’EFEO déploie aujourd’hui son activité de recherche à travers l’une des régions du monde les plus dynami- ques non seulement dans le domaine économique mais aussi sur le plan scientifique : création de nouvelles institutions, émergence de nouvelles disciplines, investissements technologiques considé- rables. La méthodologie de l’EFEO est caractérisée par la recherche pluridisciplinaire et comparatiste, associant archéologie, histoire, anthropologie, philologie, et sciences religieuses. Le corps des membres scientifiques de l’EFEO, composé actuellement de qua- rante-deux directeurs d’études et maîtres de conférences, ainsi que de nombreux chercheurs associés, est organisé en huit unités de recherche déployées dans dix-sept centres en Asie et plusieurs antennes en France. Le réseau asiatique de l’EFEO est mis à la disposition des institu- tions françaises et internationales de recherche et d’enseignement. Les partenaires traditionnels de l’EFEO en France sont l’EPHE, l’EHESS, le CNRS, l’INALCO et les universités de Paris. Le nou- veau statut des membres de l’EFEO comme enseignants-cher- cheurs permet de renforcer les liens avec ces institutions, ainsi qu’avec les universités de Lille, Lyon et Toulouse, lesquelles accueillent l’enseignement des membres de l’EFEO. Par ailleurs, l’EFEO fait partie intégrante du dispositif scientifique français à l’é- tranger géré par les Ministères de la Recherche et des Affaires étrangères, ainsi que par l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles- lettres. Grâce à sa vocation pour l’enquête de terrain, l’École française d’Extrême-Orient joue un rôle unique en Asie. Le réseau dense des implantations permanentes de l’EFEO dans douze pays lui permet de traiter de sujets embrassant le monde asiatique dans son ensemble, par exemple la propagation du bouddhisme à travers la région, en étroite collaboration avec des spécialistes locaux. Par ailleurs, des programmes reliant les centres appartenant à des aires culturelles différentes encouragent les études transversales. Si ce n’est pas une thématique commune, les disciplines, par exemple l’anthropologie, l’archéologie, l’épigraphie ou l’étude des manus- crits fournissent des liens entre programmes de recherches et implantations locales. 2 ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE D’EXTRÊME-ORIENT L’École française d’Extrême-Orient reste avant tout un institut de recherche. Compte tenu de la mobilité des membres de l’EFEO, l’enseignement est envisagé par détachement temporaire des membres métropolitains aux formations de l’enseignement supérieur, ou par la validation au sein de ces formations de cours proposés à l’EFEO. La mise en place progressive du cursus LMD (licence – mastère – doctorat) en Europe facilitera non seulement la mobilité des étudiants mais permettra aussi aux membres de l’EFEO de dispenser leur enseignement dans le cadre plus large de la coopération scientifique en Europe. Dans certains pays d’Asie – Chine, Japon, Inde – l’EFEO pro- pose des enseignements dans le cadre de la coopération universi- taire ou de programmes internationaux de formation. Ce type de coopération est à même de constituer une extension non négli- geable de l’influence de la tradition scientifique française en Asie. En même temps, il permet aux membres de l’EFEO de poursuivre leur mission de recherche en Asie. Des doctorants français ou étrangers peuvent être accueillis plus formellement dans ce cadre pour effectuer des séjours de recherche en Asie sous la direction des spécialistes de l’EFEO. L’ANNÉE 2004-2005 Objectifs Cette année, l’École a mis l’accent sur le développement de la communication externe et interne, dans le souci de donner plus de cohérence à l’institution et de créer une culture de dialogue et de confiance à tous les niveaux de son organisation hiérarchique et géographique. Le nouveau corps d’enseignants-chercheurs titulari- sés sera désormais appelé à participer plus activement aux délibéra- tions concernant l’avenir de l’établissement, notamment pour ce qui concerne le recrutement des futurs membres scientifiques. Une nouvelle commission d’experts, avec une forte représentation des deux collèges des maîtres de conférences et des directeurs d’é- tudes à l’EFEO, est en cours de création. Afin de tirer le meilleur parti possible d’une plus grande participation des membres, il est indispensable de diffuser au plus grand nombre une information claire et transparente sur les missions et le fonctionnement de l’EFEO, afin de renforcer l’esprit de corps, professionnel et toujours plus responsable, au sein de l’établissement. La loi organique relative aux lois de finances (LOLF), votée en 2001 par l’ensemble des grandes formations politiques de notre pays comme élément clé de la réforme de l’État, entrera en vigueur – pour ce qui concerne notre établissement – au 1er jan- vier 2006. Cette nouvelle approche dans la gestion budgétaire va conduire les administrations à « passer d'une logique de moyens à une logique de résultats ». En l’occurrence, l’obtention dans le futur de financement public pour la recherche scientifique exigera une adéquation, moyennant des indicateurs à convenir, entre les ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE D’EXTRÊME-ORIENT 3 choix stratégiques de l’établissement et le déploiement de ses res- sources d’une part, et la finalité déclarée des programmes et les résultats obtenus d’autre part. Pour rendre opératoire cette démarche, la direction a décidé d’instituer une auto évaluation en continu, fondée sur des experti- ses externes – françaises et internationales – des programmes de recherche de l’EFEO. Par ailleurs, des mesures ont été prises pour augmenter l’impact des travaux de l’établissement : développe- ment de nouveaux réseaux de diffusion après résiliation des con- trats d’exclusivité ; publication avec large diffusion internationale d’éditions anglaises ou en langues locales des contributions majeu- res de l’EFEO aux études asiatiques ; organisation de colloques, panels et expositions EFEO à grande visibilité internationale. La direction met par ailleurs en place une comptabilité analytique et de nouveaux outils de contrôle de gestion, avec tableaux de bord trimestriels, accroissant la réactivité de l’administration de l’École. La modernisation des moyens de la recherche demeure un enjeu de taille. La numérisation des catalogues des bibliothèques de l’EFEO et de fonds importants de documentation est en cours. Le résultat en sera une meilleure visibilité, sans compter l’accessibi- lité, des ressources scientifiques de l’EFEO, indépendamment de leur localisation. Dans un monde qui intègre aussi rapidement que l’Asie les nouvelles technologies de l’information, l’EFEO ne peut pas se permettre de prendre du retard. A ce jour, l’EFEO a entamé une coopération et des échanges avec l’Université de Kyôto, l’Université chinoise de Hongkong et l’Academia sinica à Taipei, trois institutions qui sont à la pointe du développement de nouveaux outils électroniques pour la recherche dans les sciences humaines, ainsi qu’avec les Universités de Californie et de Sydney pour la mise en ligne de fonds numérisés de l’EFEO. This study is survey and qualitative research. The findings show that the impact of this case on local community is that the increasing number of visitors who believe in superstition is causing garbage problems and destructing the ecosystem of Kamchanod forest. The area of Wat Kamchanod is a small island with peat swamp forest whose floor rises upon being seasonally flooded. This type of landscape is called “Sa Nom” by locals and Kamchanod is a spring area where taraw palms densely grow. Therefore, the researchers are interested in studying the tourism situation at Wat Kamchanod in terms of the impact on economy, society and environment. The results are expected to be utilized as a guideline to manage and improve local tourism, increase incomes of locals and conserve environment to meet the concept of sustainable tourism.     About the Assessment of Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Corridors The transformation of transport corridors into economic corridors has been at the center of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program since 1998. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) conducted this Assessment to guide future investments and provide benchmarks for improving the GMS economic corridors. This Assessment reviews the state of the GMS economic corridors, focusing on transport infrastructure, particularly road transport, cross-border transport and trade, and economic potential. This assessment consists of six country reports and an integrative report initially presented in June 2018 at the GMS Subregional Transport Forum. About the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program The GMS consists of Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, the People’s Republic of China (specifically Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region), Thailand, and Viet Nam. In 1992, with assistance from the Asian Development Bank and building on their shared histories and cultures, the six countries of the GMS launched the GMS Program, a program of subregional economic cooperation. My work builds on the recent revisions of the secularization theory, which demonstrates the alternative and hybrid ways people seek out religion in modernity. To this end, my project examines the emerging popularity and phenomenon of international meditation centers in Thailand, focusing on encounters between international meditation center teachers and their international students. Through participant observation and in-depth interviews at these sites throughout Thailand, my project explores the social processes of religious change and adaptation, and the construction of religious meaning. I detail the historical conditions that led to the formation of persisting ideas of Buddhism by tracing the continuities between Orientalist interpretations and modern-day spiritual seekers. He chose, and was accepted by, Venerable Acharn Mahā Boowa, who was relatively unknown at that time. His monastery, Wat Pa Baan Taad, was in the north-eastern province of Udon Thani. In those days, it was an area scarcely developed where traveling was done on foot or by bullock cart. The Monastery grounds were partly forested, surrounded by paddy fields and connected to the village by a sandy track lined with tall trees. There was a plentiful supply of water provided from wells and huge rainwater tanks, but beyond that there was little in the way of any other facility. Life in that region was sparse and comfortless and it was there that Jane, in company with her friend Freda Wint, took herself at a time when the notion of two educated and refined middle class ladies going on such an adventure would have been almost unthinkable. When reading the letters it should be remembered that Bhikkhu Paññāvaḍḍho, at the outset of his training under Venerable Acharn Mahā Boowa, was a beginner who had had little more than an intellectual grasp of the teachings of the Buddha. As the letters progress one becomes aware of Bhikkhu Paññāvaḍḍho’s growing insight and wisdom.

This is an open access article licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 License The Cultural Identity Construction of Temples for Tourism Puttharak Prabnok Department of Humanity, Faculty of Humanity and Social Science, Khon Kaen University, Thailand Abstract This study presents Buddhist temples’ cultural identify construction to serve a tourism purpose in Thailand. Qualitative data were collected by in-depth interviews with 20 key informants who represented the temples and the tourism organizations. Research findings: The Buddhist temples, which are considered to be the main religious organization, had changed their role to fit the new social trend. In the past, temples were the heart of community lifestyles and the center of religious activity practice. In this present time, however, Buddhist temples become religious tourist places. Carrying such new role, it appears that temples have been trying to establish five cultural identifies with the aim to best serve the tourism. Those five cultural identities are increasing cultural capital value, capturing the tourists’ faith through the presentation of respected monk or abbot, combining Buddhist beliefs to the local faiths, setting up the temple’ tourism landmark, and building a unique tradition of the temple and the community.
