    Troubadours, trouvères. Lyric poets or poet-musicians of France in the 12th and 13th centuries. It is customary to describe as troubadours those poets who worked in the south of France and wrote in Provençal, the langue d’oc , whereas the trouvères worked in the north of France and wrote in French, the langue d’oil . I. Troubadour poetry 1. Introduction. The troubadours were the earliest and most significant exponents of the arts of music and poetry in medieval Western vernacular culture. Their influence spread throughout the Middle Ages and beyond into French (the trouvères, see §II below), German, Italian, Spanish, English and other European languages. The first centre of troubadour song seems to have been Poitiers, but the main area extended from the Atlantic coast south of Bordeaux in the west, to the Alps bordering on Italy in the east. There were also ‘schools’ of troubadours in northern Italy itself and in Catalonia. Their influence, of course, spread much more widely. Pillet and Carstens (1933) named 460 troubadours; about 2600 of their poems survive, with melodies for roughly one in ten.     NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS Karen G. Casebier is an Assistant Professor of Modern Languages at Saint Francis University. She received her Ph.D. in French from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a dissertation entitled “The Conflation of the Sacred and the Profane in Thirteenth-Century Devotional Literature: Generic Fluidity in Old French Vernacular Hagiography and Manuscripts of La Vie des Pères.” Her research focuses on the intersection of the sacred and profane in Old French literature, including hagiography, the fabliaux, and Old French romance. In addition, she maintains a strong interest in the translatio studii. More recently, she has begun to explore bestiary symbolism in Old French hagiography and courtly romance, and she is particularly interested in the use of imaginary animals in Old French literature. She has published articles on Chrétien de Troyes, Christine de Pizan, and Antoine de la Sale. Tania M. Colwell is a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University, Canberra. She received her Ph.D. in Medieval Studies (history and litera- ture) at the Australian National University in 2009. Her dissertation, entitled “Reading Mélusine: Romance Manuscripts and their Audiences, c.1380– c.1530),” explores the reception of the prose and poetic Mélusine romances in the later Middle Ages and the relationship between the manuscripts and the political and cultural lives of their patrons, owners, and audiences. She has published articles on Mélusine, Richard III, Robin Hood, and depictions of anomalous masculine bodies in Middle English romances; her current research interests include female lordship and constructions of dynastic identity with particular reference to cognatic lineage. Alcune caratteristiche del suo stile poetico ne fanno supporre un ruolo rilevante, benché ancora ine- splorato, nella fissazione e diffusione di formule e immagini che dan- no consistenza all’ideale della fin’amor. More narrowly, this thesis argues that in Madame Bovary, Flaubert attaches a specifically twelfth-century understanding of passion to Emma Bovary, one that is at the heart of troubadour lyric poetry. What is more, I argue that Emma finds in this vision of love, whose structure is built upon a Neoplatonist dialectic and expressed through a paradoxical antithesis, an Ideal—an ideal world, life, and vision of herself—to which she devotes her entire life. An understanding of passion in this way, I believe, changes the light in which Emma Bovary is too often cast. Rather than advancing a point of view that perpetuates interpretations of Emma as naive, hopelessly sentimental, and at the complete mercy of (dis)illusion, this thesis argues that conceptualizing passion as an end in itself reveals in Emma a purposeful quest for transcendence as well as a nonpareil level of agency and self-actualization, the likes of which there is no equal in nineteenth-century French fiction.
