Volume. 2 Issue. 15 Tuesday 22nd July

Bolingbroke Academy is proud to be green. The Courageous Hound will be emailed unless otherwise requested. A few newsletters will be available at reception.

Dear Parent/Carer,

I can’t quite believe this is the final issue of the Courageous Hound for this academic year. What a year it has been and I am looking forward to reviewing our achievements at the Annual Speech Day and Prize Giving in September and seeing lots of you there.

In this issue of the Courageous Hound we have lots of information about new staff members and how departments will look for the Academic Year 2014-2015. Whilst we are looking forward to welcoming lots of new teachers as our Academy grows we are saying goodbye to some familiar faces who will be greatly missed.

Hound We would like to wish Miss Harvey all the best as she embarks on a fantastic opportunity. She has really inspired all pupils to take a keen interest in different types of sport and has encouraged their competitive side, particularly in cricket.

We would also like to wish Mr Constable all the best as he begins a new challenge. He has done a wonderful job to help all the pupils, especially those who need that extra support, to grow in confidence. Ms Bergin from the Humanities Department will also be sorely missed as she embarks on an exciting challenge in New York.

For more details on Who’s Who for 2014-2015 please see pages 3 & 4

On Monday 7th July we launched our new website. We hope you will all be able to navigate your way around it easily. It’s a lot easier and simpler than our previous site and we hope to keep making changes over the summer period to improve the calendar and other information. On page 7 you will find an introduction to the new Courageous www.arkbolingbrokeacademy.org.

Please remember these very important dates for your diary.

 Wednesday 23rd & Thursday 24th July - Uniform Pop-Up Shop Days  Friday 19th September - Annual Speech Day & Prize Giving

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing you on Monday 8th September.

MODEL UN DEBATE TRIP Hound By Ms Brown On Wednesday 2nd July, a team of year eight debaters consisting of James Wilson, Rae Madoc Jones, Salma Awale, Ruth Parkman-Eason, Isi Leather and Jack Jenkin, competed in a Model United Nations debate against sev- en other teams. The day started off with a poster presentation, where Ruth spoke about an A2 poster that she

Courageous Courageous had made with Rae on article 27 of the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child); the post- er went on to be specially commended for its detail and decoration. Next, James, Salma and Rae debated with another competing school, the motion being ‘this house believes that the government should take responsibility to make sure that no child goes hungry’ – Salma was specially commended at the end for giving one of the best speeches. After a pleasant lunch on the sunny grass outside, the day continued with a speech made on Ghana by Jack, and ended with a general assembly debate in which the team made huge contributions towards resolutions on the Millennium Development Goals.

SCIENCE EXPERIMENT GETS MESSY By Ms Westcott

Year 7 pupils have been learning about the rock cycle on our planet this term. We’ve been making fossils, experimenting with model lava, avoid- ing volcanic eruptions and weathering model rocks. Pupils have been getting messy but the enthusiasm they have for learning has been very commendable! Keep up the good work year 7 scientists and your end of year science results will be great!

ARK MUSIC GALA

Hound On Monday 7 July, Bolingbroke Academy joined 750 pupils from 25 academies in the ARK Schools network. They came together to perform in the sixth ARK Schools Music Gala held at the world-renowned Barbican Centre in London.

A packed audience of around 1000 supporters celebrated the achievements of students from throughout the net-

Courageous Courageous work. The Barbican Centre, which is normally home to the likes of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Shakespeare Company, hosted ARK Schools children who performed a range of music from John Williams to Pharrell Williams.

The event involved pupils of all musical abilities and ages, in a bid to prove that everyone has the ability to be a musician, given the opportunity. Performances included the Eurovision Anthem ‘We write the story’ written by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and , ‘Skyfall’ by Adele as well as Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’.

Pupils also performed ‘Hymn to the Fallen’ by John Williams, a moving tribute to those killed or wounded in battle, as this year marks both the 70th anniversary of D Day and the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.

Bryan Welton, Director of Music at ARK Schools, said: “Our pupils and teachers should feel very proud of what they have achieved this evening. The dedication, inclusion and diversity of musicianship displayed on stage captured the spirit of this event perfectly. It is clear from the audience reaction and the smiles on performers’ faces that their talent has been recognised and memories have been created that will last for years to come.

At ARK we know that music plays an extraordinary part in our pupil’s lives. It allows them to develop skills and attributes that will set them up for future success. We believe every child can be a musician, and that through music, pupils become curious for all the world has to offer; they discover a life of spiritual and emotional fulfilment. This is why music continues to be a priority for our children.”

Fawwaz N’Diaye from Year 8 said: “I loved listening to the Primary children singing – they sounded great! Being on stage at the Barbican was incredible – the lighting, the audience, and everyone performing together was an amazing experience”

Dilan Polat was also very impressed: “It was really fun to meet and sing with other singers. I especially liked the SPARK choir, who sounded angelic.”

6 ENGLISH TRIPS SUMMER 2014 By Ms Kelly

Year 7 and 8 have been enjoying trips to the theatre this half term, as part of their study of Shakespeare. The year 7s went to see the Royal National Ballet perform 'Romeo and Juliet' at the Royal Albert Hall. The performance was very dramatic and emotive music and fantastic costumes helped to bring the story for life. For many pupils it was their first time at the ballet and they had not been sure what to expect. Daniel Ford said 'It was amazing. I could easily understand the story.' and ballet fan Alliyah Johnson said 'Ballet really helps you to understand how the characters are feeling even though there are no words.'

Regent's Park Open Air Theatre was the venue for our second Shakespeare trip, to see 'Twelfth Night'. The performance was aimed at young people and had only 6 actors playing all the different parts which lead to a lot of quick and often comical costume changes. This was no ordinary production: it included songs, a 'love-o -meter' and water fights which even featured our very own Ariana Farmanfarmaian up on stage. The Bolingbroke pupils were also up on their feet taking part in a mass dance routine, and as the photos show, enjoying every minute.

These two very different productions helped to give the pupils a greater understanding of Shakespeare's work and the great stories he tells. Look out for more theatre trips next year.

Hound Hound BOYS CRICKET By Miss Harvey

Courageous Courageous Courageous Courageous

Year 7 Boys vs. Emmanuel

th On Friday 20 June 2014 the year 7 boy’s cricket team travelled to Emmanuel school to play in what is now an annu- al local derby. Bolingbroke, led by Captain Daniel Newman, lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. In an eventful first over, wicketkeeper Daniel Ford, took an amazing catch behind the stumps off the bowling of Newman. Emmanu- el batted steadily during their 20 overs setting a target of 127. The Emmanuel staff were particularly impressed with out fielding, especially the boundary fielders. In reply, our batting looked under pressure in the beginning but New- man with the support of Luke Cheeseman stuck around for a while and tried to set a platform for getting the runs required. Unfortunately Bolingbroke were narrowly defeated in the end as Emmanuel’s bowlers stuck to their line and length consistently claiming all of our 10 wickets. Well done boys on completing your first competitive match as a year group.

Year 8 Boys vs. Emmanuel On Tuesday 24th July 2014 the year 8 boy’s cricket team travelled to Emmaunel school seeking to deliver revenge for the very narrow defeat they suffered last year. Bolingbroke, led by captain Ethan Riley, won the toss and chose to bowl first. Riley set an attacking field for the first over and this paid fruitful as he took a prized wicket of Emmanuel’s opener. This set the tone for the rest of Bolingbroke’s fielding and bowling display which was 1st class. Mikey Wilson struck in his first over almost taking a hatrick, he took 3 wickets in the game. This was supported by his brother James Wilson who chipped in with 2 wickets of his own. Nick Whyte and Michael Law took a wicket a piece – Whytes victim was clean bowled. Emmanuel finished on 101 -9. In reply Bolingbroke’s batting got off to a flying start with Riley hitting the opening bowler for successive boundaries. This was supported by Harry Siddle and the Wil- sons. Unfortunately whilst Bolingbroke were quickly chipping off the runs we also were quickly running out of wick- ets and it was heart-breaking that we came up 14 runs short in the end. It was a magnificent display of the year 8s excellence and commitment to practise that we came so close.

GIRLS CRICKET

By Miss Harvey

KS3 Girls vs. Emmanuel

On Friday 20th June the KS3 girl’s cricket team travelled the short distance to Emmaunel to play in pairs 8 a side game un- der the leadership of Hannah Cheeseman. The girl’s cricket team has been developing across the year practising in striking and fielding enrichment alongside their rounder’s skills. Cheeseman won the toss and chose to bowl. In pairs cricket the batting team always starts on 200 runs and loses 5 runs every time their team loses a wicket. After 10 overs Emmanuel scored 298 having lost several wickets through an amazing run out by India Nam and a good catching display shown by the majority of the team as well. In reply Bolingbroke valiantly scored 197 having lost the majority of their runs through poor shot selection, choosing to be aggressive in the run chase when a more defensive shot was applicable. The game enabled the girls to practise in match conditions in preparation for the Surrey plate competition.

KS3 Girls @ Surrey Schools Plate Competition On Monday 23rd June 2014 the KS3 girl’s cricket team travelled to Sheen Cricket club to compete in the Surrey schools girls’ plate competition. When Bolingbroke originally signed up to compete in this tournament it was meant to be a tournament for emerging

schools that had just begun to play girls cricket. Unfortunately all of the girls’ schools pulled out or entered mixed teams. Miss Harvey decided it would be an excellent oppor- tunity for the girls to develop their cricket skills against some boy’s teams who had just begun playing as well. Bolingbroke never looked out of place in the 4 matches we played and were highly commended by the boy’s schools for giving all of their opponents some tough games. There were a few standout moments- India’s batting and bowling was fantas- tic she took 4 wickets in her 4 overs and scored 40 runs overall. Leila Suma took one of the best catches I have ever seen at backward square leg in the boundary. I was very proud of them holding own against the boys- well done. Girls Rugby

On Monday 16th June 2014 the year 7 rugby team travelled to the Surrey emerging schools rugby tournament in New Malden. It was time for year 7s to put into practise all the expert coaching they have received this year from RFU coach Alex Fieldhouse and England player La Toya Mason. The tourna- ment wasn’t about winning it was about development of skills and gaining ex- perience of playing in lots of competitive rugby matches. IN the fantastic sun- shine Bolingbroke held their own against teams who had vastly more experi- ence than them and consistently scored tries and linked passages of play to- gether with fantastic passes and movement. I am very proud of the develop- ment they have made this year and hope many of them attend the girl’s rugby team at Battersea Ironsides in September.

KS3 Girls Rounders vs BTGS On Wednesday 25th June 2014 Bolingbroke hosted a KS3 rounders match against Bishop Thomas Grant school on Wandsworth Common. Under the leadership of Kaydena Smith Bolingbroke lost the toss and were asked to bat first. All of the girl’s commitment to practise at striking and fielding club was seen in their batting. Bolingbroke used a variety of different striking techniques placing the ball all over the outfield making it very difficult for BTGS to set a field. This meant preventing Bolingbroke them from scoring was very difficult. Bolingbroke’s great form continued in their fielding innings running a number of the opponents out at 1st and 2nd base and taken numerous catches to place BTGS under a lot of pres- sure. The final score after 2 innings was 8 ½ to BTGS and 9 ½ to Bolingbroke resulting in a close but exciting win for Bolingbroke. Congratulations girls!
