OP2021/2011) and in Greyton, Western Cape (permit no. AAA007-00373-0035). Bats were captured during emergence from roof roosts or cave entrances using a harp trap, hand-net or mist nets. Animal handling and sample collection was done in accordance with accepted international guidelines for mammals as set out in Sikes et al. (1). Individuals were then placed in individual cloth bags for up to 3 hours to collect faecal pellets. Faecal pellets were removed from each bag using sterile forceps and suspended in 1.0ml of RNAlater in a 2ml cryovial before transport to the laboratory in Tygerberg and virological testing under institutional clearance (ref. SU-ACUM12-00001). In the Western Cape, all bats were released unharmed. In Phinda, they were euthanized with halothane and retained as accessioned voucher specimens in the mammal collection of the Durban Natural Science Museum. Associated specimen derivatives (e.g. faecal pellets) were obtained through a museum loan (loan no. M201011_1). Species were determined based on morphological features following current systematics (2). -

Neoromicia zuluensis – Zulu Pipistrelle Bat recommends that zuluensis is specifically distinct from somalicus (Rautenbach et al. 1993). Assessment Rationale Listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution (estimated extent of occurrence within the assessment region is 246,518 km²), presumed large population, and because there are no major identified threats that could cause widespread population decline. It occurs in many protected areas across its range and appears to have a degree of tolerance for human modified habitats. Savannah woodlands are generally well protected in the assessment region. However, more research is needed into the roosting behaviour of this species to identify key roost sites and monitor subpopulation trends. Regional population effects: Its range is continuous with Zimbabwe and Mozambique through transfrontier parks, Trevor Morgan and thus dispersal is assumed to be occurring. However, it has relatively low wing loading (Norberg & Rayner 1987; Schoeman & Jacobs 2008), so significant rescue effects Regional Red List status (2016) Least Concern are uncertain. Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. Africa’s large mammals are certainly a big attraction that one never tires of, but it’s often the smaller mammals, diverse birdlife and incredible reptiles that draw one back again and again for another unparalleled visit. Seeing a breeding herd of elephant for instance will always be special but there is a certain thrill in seeing a Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, cheetah or a Lilian’s lovebird – to name but a few. As a globally discerning traveller, look beyond the obvious, and challenge yourself to learn as much about all wildlife aspects and the ecosystems through which you will travel on your safari. -
