  • Jan Sedivka Memorial Lecture 2015
TASMANIAN MUSIC TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION STATE CONFERENCE FEBRUARY 28TH 2015 AT THE HUTCHINS SCHOOL. SEDIVKA LECTURE TO BE PRESENTED BY MRS FRANCES UNDERWOOD PATRON OF THE TASMANIAN MUSIC TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION A Question of Musical Genius. Genius is a gift that has its own force; you can’t make it or fake it. But what if your pupil is not only a genius, with exceptional intellectual and creative power and natural ability, but also your own son? How do you teach such a person? How, as a teacher, do you create the circumstances that allow genius to show itself and flourish? This was the question that Verna Tozer, mother of Geoffrey Tozer, had to grapple with. At the launch, in Melbourne, of Geoffrey Tozer’s compositions on 11 December 2014 former Prime Minister, the Hon. Paul Keating, described the late Geoffrey Tozer as “ a man of humble greatness; an Australian genius who can rightfully take his place alongside the three Australian greats; Melba, Grainger and Sutherland.” Apart from his international prize winning performing prowess, his ability to improvise, transpose at sight or create on the piano a richly textured reduction of an orchestral score at sight was legendary. He was also a composer. According to Schumann a genius can only by understood by another genius. In delivering the Jan Sedivka memorial lecture, Frances Underwood will explore the genius of Verna Tozer, through her teaching of her son, Geoffrey up to the age of ten when he became a pupil of Eileen Ralph. Pamela Freeman, music curator of the Geoffrey Tozer Estate, will explore the genius of Geoffrey Tozer, particularly his compositional legacy in Pieces from Childhood, written between the ages of seven and fourteen.

  • Inspiring Women Speech Mrs Underwood
A SPEECH DELIVERED AT THE INSPIRING WOMEN SYMPOSIUM ST MICHAEL’S COLLEGIATE, HOBART, SATURDAY 28 APRIL 2012 BY MRS FRANCES UNDERWOOD Teaching is a most rewarding job, especially if you want to make a positive difference for good in the world and at the same time develop a valuable and highly transferable skill set. That is my experience. My story began in Kashmir India, where I was conceived in January 1947. India was then in the throes of the struggle for independence. My father, a British, Sandhurst-trained military officer, was a Colonel in the 16th Punjab Regiment of the British/ Indian Army. My mother had lived in, what was then, India, since the age of three when her father had been reported missing in action. Amidst the violence and rioting, and under cover of the darkness of night my mother, pregnant with me and with 3 other children under the age of nine, made the perilous trip first by train and then on board the Empress of Scotland back to England where I was born in Temple Combe, Wincanton Somerset in October 1947. In 1948 the decision was made to immigrate to Tasmania where my mother’s sister, Veronica Tozer had settled on a farm on the North West Coast. My mother, her three children and baby Frances accompanied by a governess made the long voyage by sea to Hobart. My father stayed in India and joined us a couple of years later. 1 After this rather perilous beginning to life, it was my good fortune as a child to live within easy access to Veronica Tozer, my mother’s sister.

SHORT SYNOPSIS The Eulogy is a feature documentary, which for the first time unravels the truths and myths behind the life and career of one of Australia’s most brilliant, prolific and least understood concert pianists, Geoffrey Tozer. LONG SYNOPSIS ‘Geoffrey Tozer’s death is a national tragedy.’ - The Hon. Paul Keating ‘Geoffrey was a great ambassador for his nation’s culture. Much of the time it must have felt to him as if his nation didn’t care.’- Norman Lebrecht, French Music Critic The Eulogy is a feature documentary, which for the first time unravels the truths and myths behind the life and career of one of Australia’s most brilliant, prolific and least understood concert pianists, Geoffrey Tozer. As an 8-year-old child prodigy the world was Geoffrey Tozer’s oyster. From the time that he was the youngest ever semi-finalist at the famous Leeds Piano Competition, he dazzled audiences around the world. As an adult Geoffrey Tozer continued to perform in Australia and internationally but for a career that promised and delivered so much, Tozer’s end was shocking. At his memorial service in 2009, Tozer’s friend and former Prime Minister, Paul Keating delivered a searing eulogy, painting a haunting picture of a lonely genius shunned by the Australian musical establishment during the final years of his life.
