Catholic Saints Heroes and Believers of Faith Dru Garza October 29, 2019 The USCCB.org states that all Christians are called to be saints. Saints are persons in heaven (officially canonized or not) who lived vitreous lives in a heroic way or were martyred for the faith and who are worthy of imitation. The Saints lived on earth and experienced joy, pain, war, peace, love and hate. They committed sins, had bad habits and did stupid stuff. They did not lead spotless lives but with a singular focus became closer to God. We can learn from their experiences and let them help us on our journey. Three official steps to sainthood-the process can start 5 years after the death of a candidate Venerable: The title given to a candidate for sainthood whose cause has not yet reached the beatification stage but whose heroic virtue has been declared by the pope Blessed: To be recognized as a Blessed one miracle through the candidate's intercession is required Saint: Canonization requires a second miracle after beatification. In the case of the martyred a miracle is not required prior to beatification but one is required before canonization. CATHOLIC TERMS Beatification: The second stage in the process of proclaiming a person a saint. Canonization: The formal process by which the Church declares a person to be a saint and worthy of universal veneration. Miracle: Something that has occurred by the grace of God through the intercession of a Venerable or Blessed which is scientifically inexplicable. Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. -Proverbs 28:13 "Saints are only sinners who keep trying" - Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Saint Augustine of Hippo Died 430 Feast Day August 28 • The son of Saint Monica but spent many years of his life in wicked living and in false beliefs, partying and drinking • Sins of impurity and pride darkened his mind so much that he could not see or understand the Divine truth • Came to see that Christianity was the one true religion, yet did not feel worthy enough because he did not think he could live a pure life • He heard a child singing "Take up and read" so he picked up the book of Letters of St. Paul and read the first passage his eyes fell upon. • The passage said to put away all impurity and to live in imitation of Jesus. From then on, he began a new life devoted to God. • He was baptized, became a priest, a bishop, a famous Catholic writer, founder of religious priests and one of the greatest saints. Fun Fact Saint Augustine of Hippo practiced poverty and supported the poor. His writings influenced the development of the Western Church and philosophy and indirectly all Western Christianity. He is the patron saint of brewers "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." -John 15:13 What Saint comes to mind when you read this? Saint Maximilian Kolbe Saint and Martyr of the Immaculate Born 8 January 1894 Died 14 August 1941 Beatified 17 October 1971 Canonized 10 October 1982 Feast Day August 14 • At 12 had a vision of Mary holding two crowns; one white for purity and one red for martyrdom. She asked him if he would accept either of them and he told her that he would accept both • Ordained in 1918 and founded monasteries in Japan and India. • Active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary • Hid over 2,000 Jews from Nazi persecution, after his second arrest he was sent to Auschwitz • Ten men were chosen to die by starvation to warn against escape-he volunteered in a heroic act of charity to take the place of one, the father of a family. • After a two-week ordeal in the starvation bunker, he was the last to die, killed by a lethal injection of carbolic acid • Last thing he did was to forgive those that had killed him At Father Maximilian's canonization, Pope John Paul II said: "Maximilian did not die but gave his life … for his brother." Amazing Fun Fact While on a mission to Japan he built a monastery on the side of a mountain and according to Shinto beliefs this was not the side to be best suited with the harmony of nature. Even with opposition he did not change the placement of the monastery. You may ask why is this amazing? The monastery he built in 1930 still stands today. In Nagasaki, Japan. Because of where he chose to build, it withstood the atomic bomb that was dropped on August 9, 1945. The Saints are not made up and they aren't used to trick us. They are here to help us on our faith journey. And who couldn't use a little help? From usccb.org- "The saints, the members of the Church who have arrived at perfect union with Christ, join their wills to the will of God in praying for those in the Church who are still on their pilgrimage of faith." I know that I can use all the help I can get for I am a sinner, but I hope to be with God and the saints in heaven one day. When it comes to your confirmation saint you may already have one in mind. For me I had no clue and didn't know where to start. Here are a few ideas on getting started. 1. Using a special date in your life search for saints that have that as their feast day 2. Search by specific Patron saint of … (i.e. Saint Helena is the patron saint of archeologists) 3. Search by name, country, etc. There are lots of websites to research saints. Here are a few that I have found and used. Saintsresource.com Catholic.org Loyolapress.com For the process to become a saint you find more detailed information at www.usccb.org/prayer-and- worship/prayers-and-devotions/saints/ On October 13, 2019 Pope Francis declared 5 new saints.
