  • Two Notes on the Exceptional Shalshelet
TWO NOTES ON THE EXCEPTIONAL SHALSHELET GILAD J. GEVARYAHU THE FOUR INSTANCES OF SHALSHELET IN THE TORAH The cantillation mark shalshelet appears only four times in the Torah. The root of this word is shin-lamed-shin, meaning three, and, in the Ashkenazic tradition as well as in many Sephardic traditions, the melody ascends and descends three times. It appears three times in the book of Genesis and one time in the book of Leviticus. In the Mesorah it is referred to as Mar’imin u’Mafsikin (Mesorah Gedolah, Lev. 8:23). Mar’imin means thunderous, and Mafsikin means pausing, terms that appear to describe the sound of its melody.1 In this article, we will see how all four shalshelot in the Torah consistently relate to the texts in which they are used. These are the four instances of the shalshelet in the Torah: 1. Genesis 19:16: Shalshelet appears in the story of Lot in Sodom, when the angels tell Lot that he must leave the city, for God is about to destroy it. The word with the shalshelet is the first word in the verse, Still he delayed [vayitmahameha]. So the men [angels] seized his hand . Although not directly mentioning the shalshelet, many commentators note here that Lot hesitated to leave and responded in an unusually slow manner. This approach is found for example in Pseudo-Jonathan, Rashi, Ibn-Ezra, and Radak on this verse. This is based in Genesis Rabbah 50:11, that Lot was concerned about losing all the property he had accumulated and was hesitant to leave Sodom.

Parashat HaShavuah r;hB Vayikra (Leviticus) Understanding the Parsha 25:1-26:2 B’har Leviticus 25:1-26:2 (On Mount (Sinai) We will Learn how to 1) interpret the main theme (subject)of a Parsha (weekly reading from the Torah), 2) make thematic connections to that Parsha (study the Scriptures related by a common theme [subject], line upon line and precept upon precept) 3) learn how to gain greater understanding of the Parsha we are looking at through its thematic connections to other portions of Scripture. Chiastic Structures Within the Torah Back in Parashat Mishpatim, we saw an example of achiastic structure in the Torah. A chiastic structure is a thematic method of organizing the stories of the Torah. Some believe, the Scriptures are a hodge-podge of stories hooked together in a book; but, they couldn’t be further from the truth. The Scriptures (and the Torah in particular) are a VERY organized and structured document. In fact, they are so well organized, once you understand how to uncover their organizational principles you will definitely fall on your knees and give glory to Adonai, knowing that only an all-knowing, all-powerful Elohim (God) could have developed such highly structured approach. In this lesson, we will uncover another chiastic structure woven through the stories found in the books of Exodus and Leviticus. Thematic analysis is THE primary method and model we should be using to understand and interpret the Scriptures. Adonai intended for us to study the Scripturesthematically. This will become even more evident to you becausethe themes will naturally lead you to profound truths and patterns found in the Torah that would otherwise remain hidden! http://www.restorationoftorah.org http://restorationoftorah.org/WeeklyParsha/MBMBehar.htm 1 The "Problems" With the Sidra Read Leviticus 25:1.What seems "strange" about this verse? 3-Year The Torah Portion | Parashat #80 Torah Cycle Tzav (Reading 2 of 3) Parashat #80 April 18, 2020 w;c I) Reading the Torah Portion Tzav Now it’s time to read the Torah portion. You will get the most out of the Torah portion if you have Leviticus 6:12-7:38 (E) a disciplined plan for approaching it each week. I suggest the following (although you may want to Leviticus 6:5 – 7:38 (H) develop your own plan of attack). Prepare by having a pen and paper ready to take notes or by having your computer ready. Read the Torah portion quickly just to get a bird’s-eye view of it and Malachi 3:4-12 to gain a general understanding of its contents. Then read it again slowly and more I Corinthians 10:1-33 contemplatively. As you read it, you should keep track of 1) changes in the main storyline (plots and subplots) of the text, 2) the introduction of new major themes you have not encountered and 11:17-34 heretofore and 3) connections to the main themes developed in the Torah portion. Keeping track of the major themes will provide you with thoughts to help you outline the passage later on. Recording changes in the storyline (subplots) will 1) help you more accurately interpret Scripture and 2) see connections to themes that may be repeated in the Haftarah and Apostolic readings. I strongly recommend that when you study these lessons you have the following tools available. 1) A Bible [all references are based on the NKJV], 2) a printed copy of this lesson, 3) pen and paper [notebook preferred] where you can either write extra notes or complete answers to questions where the lines in this lesson are not enough space to write on, 4) an on-line version of the Bible.

  • Tetzaveh - Rabbi Lerner - February 6 ,2011
Tetzaveh - Rabbi Lerner - February 6 ,2011 27:20-21: Ve'atah Tetzaveh - you should command Bnei Yisrael to take pure olive oil, pressed for lighting, to light the Menorah continually. In the Ohel outside the Paroches near the Luchos, Aharon and his sons should arrange it from evening to morning before Hashem; it is an eternal Chok for their generations from Bnei Yisrael. There are obvious questions to be asked here: Why is this topic even found here in the middle of the description of the building of the mishkan? Furthermore, it is totally unnecessary at any rate, as it appears later in Emor 24:1-3 - with very similar wording; the gist is similar to what we have here; the only difference is that the formulation in Emor is the typical one beginning with Veyedaber Hashem el Moshe, as opposed to our parsha. Abarbanel: The Torah should say Tzav and not Ve'Atah Tetzaveh? And furthermore, as asked above, this whole topic is said in Emor, except for the fact that there is no preceding Veyadaber - Hashem just jumps right into it here with no introduction? Furthermore, there in Emir it is the right place for it; here we are discussing Binyan Hamishkan, not the day-to-day operation of the mishkan? It doesn't belong here - it is totally out of place. Rabbeinu Bachya: the Torah says that the oil should be pressed, Kasis Lama'or, as opposed to oil dripping out naturally - you must take some action for this oil. Also, it cannot be from grinding and pounding the olives - it must be pressed; otherwise, there will particles of the olive - the oil must be pure, with none of the skin or other parts.

  • Sermon Slam- Cantor Linda Sue Sohn
Temple Aliyah Shavuot 2016 Sermon Slam Cantor Linda Sue Sohn In Parashat Vayeishev in Genesis chapter 39, Joseph is sold to Potiphar in Egypt. All goes well for Joseph until Potiphar’s wife casts her eye on him and tries to seduce him. ”.He refused“ וַיְמָא ֵ֓ ן ׀The text continues When we hear the unmistakably different sound of the Shalshelet trop, it’s definitely an attention-getter. Dr. Joshua Jacobson, the pre-eminent authority on cantillation with whom I studied at Hebrew College, writes in his book “Chanting the Hebrew Bible - The Art of Cantillation” that Shalshelet means “chain” and seems to describe both its shape - “a chain of three arrowheads piled on top of one another” - as well as the coutour of its melody. When found, it always appears on the first word of a verse. Dr. Jacobson insists that as part of the system of punctuation that trop plays, the Shalshelet trop is merely a place holder for another trop - Segol - which is never found on the first word as it must always be preceded by a Zarka trop. He sees no reason to associate the Shalshelet’s appearance with the dramatic context of the text. In other words, “Nothing here to see, folks - move along - move along!” However, much as I revere and respect Dr. Jacobson’s work, the fact remains that the elaborate musical tradition for chanting Shalshelet gets one’s attention and seem to invite the listener to look at what’s going on in the text. The Talmud and other respected sources give us midrashim that emphasize the repetitive nature of the action taking place.
