    Parashat HaShavuah r;hB Vayikra (Leviticus) Understanding the Parsha 25:1-26:2 B’har Leviticus 25:1-26:2 (On Mount (Sinai) We will Learn how to 1) interpret the main theme (subject)of a Parsha (weekly reading from the Torah), 2) make thematic connections to that Parsha (study the Scriptures related by a common theme [subject], line upon line and precept upon precept) 3) learn how to gain greater understanding of the Parsha we are looking at through its thematic connections to other portions of Scripture. Chiastic Structures Within the Torah Back in Parashat Mishpatim, we saw an example of achiastic structure in the Torah. A chiastic structure is a thematic method of organizing the stories of the Torah. Some believe, the Scriptures are a hodge-podge of stories hooked together in a book; but, they couldn’t be further from the truth. The Scriptures (and the Torah in particular) are a VERY organized and structured document. In fact, they are so well organized, once you understand how to uncover their organizational principles you will definitely fall on your knees and give glory to Adonai, knowing that only an all-knowing, all-powerful Elohim (God) could have developed such highly structured approach. In this lesson, we will uncover another chiastic structure woven through the stories found in the books of Exodus and Leviticus. Thematic analysis is THE primary method and model we should be using to understand and interpret the Scriptures. Adonai intended for us to study the Scripturesthematically.     3-Year The Torah Portion | Parashat #80 Torah Cycle Tzav (Reading 2 of 3) Parashat #80 April 18, 2020 w;c I) Reading the Torah Portion Tzav Now it’s time to read the Torah portion. You will get the most out of the Torah portion if you have Leviticus 6:12-7:38 (E) a disciplined plan for approaching it each week. I suggest the following (although you may want to Leviticus 6:5 – 7:38 (H) develop your own plan of attack). Prepare by having a pen and paper ready to take notes or by having your computer ready. Read the Torah portion quickly just to get a bird’s-eye view of it and Malachi 3:4-12 to gain a general understanding of its contents. Then read it again slowly and more I Corinthians 10:1-33 contemplatively. As you read it, you should keep track of 1) changes in the main storyline (plots and subplots) of the text, 2) the introduction of new major themes you have not encountered and 11:17-34 heretofore and 3) connections to the main themes developed in the Torah portion. Keeping track of the major themes will provide you with thoughts to help you outline the passage later on. Recording changes in the storyline (subplots) will 1) help you more accurately interpret Scripture and 2) see connections to themes that may be repeated in the Haftarah and Apostolic readings. I strongly recommend that when you study these lessons you have the following tools available. 1) A Bible [all references are based on the NKJV], 2) a printed copy of this lesson, 3) pen and paper [notebook preferred] where you can either write extra notes or complete answers to questions where the lines in this lesson are not enough space to write on, 4) an on-line version of the Bible.

In the Ohel outside the Paroches near the Luchos, Aharon and his sons should arrange it from evening to morning before Hashem; it is an eternal Chok for their generations from Bnei Yisrael. There are obvious questions to be asked here: Why is this topic even found here in the middle of the description of the building of the mishkan? Furthermore, it is totally unnecessary at any rate, as it appears later in Emor 24:1-3 - with very similar wording; the gist is similar to what we have here; the only difference is that the formulation in Emor is the typical one beginning with Veyedaber Hashem el Moshe, as opposed to our parsha. Abarbanel: The Torah should say Tzav and not Ve'Atah Tetzaveh? And furthermore, as asked above, this whole topic is said in Emor, except for the fact that there is no preceding Veyadaber - Hashem just jumps right into it here with no introduction? Furthermore, there in Emir it is the right place for it; here we are discussing Binyan Hamishkan, not the day-to-day operation of the mishkan? It doesn't belong here - it is totally out of place. Rabbeinu Bachya: the Torah says that the oil should be pressed, Kasis Lama'or, as opposed to oil dripping out naturally - you must take some action for this oil. Also, it cannot be from grinding and pounding the olives - it must be pressed; otherwise, there will particles of the olive - the oil must be pure, with none of the skin or other parts.

    Tetzaveh Tetzaveh, Adar 11, 5772 For Now and for Generations Harav Shaul Yisraeli - from Siach Shaul, pg. 279-280 In the context of the oil used for the Mishkan , the Torah writes, “tzav (command).” Chazal tell us that this implies a commandment that was to be carried out immediately but was also to apply for generations to come and that it is also a term that is used when there is a need to deal with an outlay of money (Sifrei, Bamidbar 1). The connection between Hashem and His Torah and Bnei Yisrael is a natural one. “I will never forget Your instructions, for through them You have given me life” (Tehillim 119:93). They are natural for us. As the Mahari Mintz says on the pasuk , “For it is not an empty matter for you,” it is not something that can be emptied out of you. This is the idea behind the commandment for now and for future generations. This is a sign that it is not something external, but something that flows from our essence. The nations of the world complained to Hashem over the fact that He did not hold Mt. Sinai over their head and force them to accept the Torah, as he did for Bnei Yisrael (Avoda Zara 2b). The Yalkut (Bamidbar 684) adds to the midrashic account that Hashem responded that they should show Him their genealogical records. How does that respond to their complaint? Hashem was telling them that based on their predecessors, it would have not helped to hold the mountain over their heads because they were not linked to the Torah in a natural way.

Suddenly the LORD called to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the Tent of Meeting.” Tzippora Spurned Rashi AND MIRIAM AND AARON SPAKE — She opened the conversation, therefore Scripture mentions her first. And whence did Miriam know that Moses had separated himself from his wife (for this was the statement she made; cf. Rashi below)? R. Nathan answered: “Miriam was beside Zipporah When it was told to Moses, ‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp’ (Numbers 11:27). When Zipporah heard this, she exclaimed, Woe to the wives of these if they have anything to do with prophecy, for they will separate from their wives just has my husband has separated from me!” It was from this that Miriam knew about it, and she told it to Aaron. Now what was the case with Miriam who had no intention to disparage him? She was punished thus severely!     Parshat HaShavua Yeshivat Har Etzion PARASHAT TETZAVE Tamid by Rav Ezra Bick The usual understanding of the division of Teruma from Tetzave is that the former deals with the building of the mishkan proper, with all its elements and utensils, the latter (except for the first two verses) deals with the kohanim, first the preparation of their garments and then the preparation of themselves as priests. At the end of the parasha there is a glaring exception to this rule, the construction of the incense altar (30,1-4), which was discussed in last year's VBM shiur by Rav Elchanan Samet (http://www.vbm-torah.org/parsha.60/20tetzav.htm). The section of the kohanim itself is divided into two parts, the garments of the kohanim (ch. 28), and the sanctification of the kohanim (ch. 29). The end of this section has a distinct conclusion (before the section on the incense altar mentioned above): And I shall sanctify the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and Aharon and his sons shall I sanctify to serve Me. And I shall dwell within the children of Israel, and shall be their God. And they shall know that I am HaShem their God, who has taken them out of Egypt in order to dwell in their midst, I am HaShem their God. (29,44-46). These verses serve as the parallel conclusion to the opening of the "construction parshiot," which we read at the beginning of last week's parasha: "And they shall make for Me a mishkan, and I shall dwell in their midst" (25,8).
