LUKACS* Department of Anthropology University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-1218, USA ABSTRACT Differential diagnosis of the aetiology of antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) may yield important insights regarding patterns of behaviour in prehistoric peoples. Variation in the consistency of food due to its toughness and to food preparation methods is a primary factor in AMTL, with dental wear or caries a significant precipitating factor. Nutritional deficiency diseases, dental ablation for aesthetic or ritual reasons, and traumatic injury may also contribute to the frequency of AMTL. Systematic observations of dental pathology were conducted on crania and mandibles at the Museo Arqueologico de Tenerife. Observations of AMTL revealed elevated frequencies and remarkable aspects of tooth crown evulsion. This report documents a 9.0% overall rate of AMTL among the ancient inhabitants of the island of Tenerife in the Canary Archipelago. Sex-specific tooth count rates of AMTL are 9.8% for males and 8.1% for females, and maxillary AMTL rates (10.2%) are higher than mandibular tooth loss rates (7.8%) Dental trauma makes a small but noticeable contribution to tooth loss among the Guanches, especially among males. In several cases of tooth crown evulsion, the dental root was retained in the alveolus, without periapical infection, and alveolar bone was in the initial stages of sequestering the dental root. In Tenerife, antemortem loss of maxillary anterior teeth is consistent with two potential causal factors: (a) accidental falls while traversing volcanic terrain; and (b) interpersonal combat, including traditional wrestling, stick-fighting and ritual combat.

Son el tema del presente estudio algunas consideraciones en torno al origen del Juego del Palo, manifestación cuyo número de participantes y estilos ha crecido de manera importante recientemente, por lo que parece necesario un poco de orden -cuando menos- en el ámbito historiográfico de estas tradiciones. Abordamos el estudio de uno de los supuestos orígenes del Juego del Palo, analizando una teoría que ha tenido evidente calado entre ciertos 2017 sectores. Universidad de La Laguna Resumen Este trabajo, elaborado sobre los juegos y deportes tradicionales de Canarias (juegos aborígenes, juegos motores tradicionales y deportes tradicionales) trata de encontrar, a partir de la comparación de sus rasgos caracterizadores, las claves praxiológicas y socioculturales que permitan entender las semejanzas o diferencias existentes entre los tres grupos estudiados y la interpretación que comporta, y todo ello hecho de manera diacrónica y sincrónica. Se presenta una breve descripción de las diversas prácticas motrices de Canarias de carácter tradicional, se justifica su proceso de catalogación, y finalmente se analizan, de forma comparada, cinco rasgos (interacción motriz, red de comunicación motriz, grado de estandarización del espacio, temporalidad y sistema de tanteo) pertenecientes a un análisis más amplio que se ha desarrollado para la catalogación de estas prácticas. Niebla Piñero Universidad de La Laguna El acompañamiento con canciones populares de las labores propias del campo, de la mar y del hogar es un hecho extendido desde tiempos inmemoriales y por múltiples culturas, en algunas de las cuales ha gozado el fenómeno, además, de un importante valor simbólico y ritual1. Convertir esta realidad histórica y antropológica en un hermoso espectáculo dramático-musical fue el objetivo del director de escena y percusionista canario Jonatan Rodríguez al coordinar el trabajo de los integrantes del grupo Pieles, compuesto por músicos, cantantes y actores, para la creación de Canto al trabajo, obra a través de la que se ha venido a reivindicar y a poner en valor la tradición folclórica de las Islas Canarias2. Y ello, precisamente, mediante la actualización de nuestros cantos vernáculos vinculados al trabajo y su fusión con sonidos de procedencias diversas: “Pieles 1. Este espectáculo titulado Canto al trabajo de la compañía Pieles se estrenó en el Teatro Guimerá de Santa Cruz de Tenerife el día 26 de mayo de 2015.
