Essential for Early Summer

In order to achieve colour in the garden once Spring has passed, we recommend the following popular garden shrubs. In most cases, there are other forms available, offering you the widest choice of and foliage colour. Be sure to bring a copy of this article along to Smeaton Nursery for reference!

1 plicatum Sterile (Japanese Snowball)

One of the most stunning of all ornamental shrubs. Pure white rounded flower clusters are formed in late May, in a double row along the length of each arching branch and often fade to pink as they age. A large up to 2m across.

2 Philadelphus Frosty Morn (Mock Orange)

Deciduous, bushy, compact shrub. The dark-green foliage helps show-off the sweetly fragrant, double, pure-white borne in profusion from early to mid-Summer.

3 Deutzia Strawberry Fields

Deciduous, upright, bushy shrub. Clusters of red buds produce striking deep crimson flowers, striped pink and white inside, from late Spring to early Summer.

4 Escallonia macrantha rubra

Bushy, evergreen shrub with glossy, deep-green . Bears light carmine-red flowers in Jun/Jul. Thrives in any reasonable soil, is ideal for hedging and tolerates coastal conditions.

5 Cistus Snow Fire (Sun Rose)

Stunning white, rich red-blotched flowers in early-mid Summer. Rounded, evergreen bush ideal for borders and containers.

6 Phygelius rectus (Cape Figwort)

This showy sub-shrub from South Africa is available in a stunning array of colours. Its upright stems produce hanging clusters of tubular flowers over the Summer in shades of pink, salmon, yellow, orange and red.

7 Cornus kousa (Flowering Dogwood)

A large, elegant deciduous shrub. Abundant flowers with showy, creamy-white bracts appear in early Summer, followed by red, strawberry-like and excellent Autumn foliage colour.

8 Weigela Red Prince

This bushy, deciduous shrub produces masses of deep-red trumpet- shaped flowers throughout the Summer, thriving in any reasonable soil, in sun or shade.

9 Exochorda x macrantha The Bride

Deciduous, arching, dense shrub with abundant large white flowers amid dark- green foliage from late-Spring to early-Summer.

10 arborescens Annabelle

Upright, bushy deciduous shrub that produces amazing, large, rounded heads of creamy-white flowers from mid-Summer. Has broad, pointed bright-green foliage and prefers a moist, shady position.

Successful Planting Tips…

*Shrubs can be planted all year round providing they are given ample water during the growing-season.

*Incorporating our Tree & Shrub compost into the soil when planting, will ensure a strong root-system.

*Applying a general fertiliser then mulch with a layer of bark-chippings around your shrubs will help to increase moisture retention and minimise competition from weeds.
