Pond and Lake Ecosystems A pond or lake ecosystem includes biotic (living) plants, animals and micro-organisms, as well as abiotic (nonliving) physical and chemical interactions. Pond and lake ecosystems are a prime example of lentic ecosystems. Lentic refers to stationary or relatively still water, from the Latin lentus, which means sluggish. A typical lake has distinct zones of biological communities linked to the physical structure of the lake. (Figure below) The littoral zone is the near shore area where sunlight penetrates all the way to the sediment and allows aquatic plants (macrophytes) to grow. Light levels of about 1% or less of surface values usually define this depth. The 1% light level also defines the euphotic zone of the lake, which is the layer from the surface down to the depth where light levels become too low for photosynthesizers. In most lakes, the sunlit euphotic zone occurs within the epilimnion. However, in unusually transparent lakes, photosynthesis may occur well below the thermocline into the perennially cold hypolimnion. For example, in western Lake Superior near Duluth, MN, summertime algal photosynthesis and growth can persist to depths of at least 25 meters, while the mixed layer, or epilimnion, only extends down to about 10 meters. Ultra-oligotrophic Lake Tahoe, CA/NV, is so transparent that algal growth historically extended to over 100 meters, though its mixed layer only extends to about 10 meters in summer. Unfortunately, inadequate management of the Lake Tahoe basin since about 1960 has led to a significant loss of transparency due to increased algal growth and increased sediment inputs from stream and shoreline erosion. -

We present for the frst time a model that identifes conditions responsible for the constrained fow of vitamin B1 from unicellular organisms to planktivorous fshes. The fow of vitamin B1 through the food web is constrained under anthropogenic pressures of increased nutrient input and, driven by climatic change, increased light attenuation by dissolved substances transported to marine coastal systems. Fishing pressure on piscivorous fsh, through increased abundance of planktivorous fsh that overexploit mesozooplankton, may further constrain vitamin B1 fow from producers to consumers. We also found that key ecological contributors to the constrained fow of vitamin B1 are a low mesozooplankton biomass, picoalgae prevailing among primary producers and low fuctuations of population numbers of planktonic organisms. Vitamin B1 (thiamin) is necessary for the proper functioning of the majority of organisms because it serves as a cofactor that associates with a number of enzymes involved in primary carbohydrate and amino acid metabo- 1 2 lism . Vitamin B1 defciency compromises mitochondrial functioning and causes nerve signaling malfunction 3 in animals . On a systemic level, low vitamin B1 levels translate into impaired health, immunosuppression and 4 reproductive failures . -

Holmlund *, Monica Hammer Natural Resources Management, Department of Systems Ecology, Stockholm University, S-106 91, Stockholm, Sweden Abstract In this paper, we review the role of fish populations in generating ecosystem services based on documented ecological functions and human demands of fish. The ongoing overexploitation of global fish resources concerns our societies, not only in terms of decreasing fish populations important for consumption and recreational activities. Rather, a number of ecosystem services generated by fish populations are also at risk, with consequences for biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and ultimately human welfare. Examples are provided from marine and freshwater ecosystems, in various parts of the world, and include all life-stages of fish. Ecosystem services are here defined as fundamental services for maintaining ecosystem functioning and resilience, or demand-derived services based on human values. To secure the generation of ecosystem services from fish populations, management approaches need to address the fact that fish are embedded in ecosystems and that substitutions for declining populations and habitat losses, such as fish stocking and nature reserves, rarely replace losses of all services. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Meyers Developments in aquatic Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences, Louisiana State University, microbiology Baton Rouge, LA, USA Received 30 August 2000 Accepted 29 September 2000 Summary Major discoveries in marine microbiology over the past 4-5 decades have resulted in the recognition of bacteria as a major biomass component of marine food webs. Such discoveries include chemosynthetic activities in deep-ocean ecosystems, survival processes in oligotrophic waters, and the role of microorganisms in food webs coupled with symbiotic relationships and energy flow. Many discoveries can be attributed to innovative methodologies, including radioisotopes, immunofluores- cent-epifluorescent analysis, and flow cytometry. The latter has shown the key role of marine viruses in marine system energetics. Studies of the components of the “microbial loop” have shown the significance of various phagotrophic processes involved in grazing by microinvertebrates. Microbial activities and dissolved organic carbon are closely coupled with the dynamics of fluctuating water masses. New biotechnological approaches and the use of molecular biology techniques still provide new and relevant information on the role of microorganisms in oceanic and estuarine environments. International interdisciplinary studies have explored ecological aspects of marine microorganisms and their significance in biocomplexity. INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ORGANISMS . AND ENVIRONMENT 2·1 FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS An understanding of the relationships between an organism and its environment can be attained only when the environmental factors that can be experienced by the organism are considered. This is difficult because it is first necessary for the ecologist to have some knowledge of the neurological and physiological detection abilities of the organism. Sound, for example, should be measured with an instrument that responds to sound energy in the same way that the organism being studied does. Snow depths should be measured in a manner that reflects their effect on the animal. If six inches of snow has no more effect on an animal than three inches, a distinction between the two depths is meaningless. Six inches is not twice three inches in terms of its effect on the animal! Lower animals differ from man in their response to environmental stimuli. Color vision, for example, is characteristic of man, monkeys, apes, most birds, some domesticated animals, squirrels, and, undoubtedly, others. Deer and other wild ungulates probably detect only shades of grey. Until definite data are ob tained on the nature of color vision in an animal, any measurement based on color distinctions could be misleading. Infrared energy given off by any object warmer than absolute zero (-273°C) is detected by thermal receptors on some animals. Ticks are sensitive to infrared radiation, and pit vipers detect warm prey with thermal receptors located on the anterior dorsal portion of the skull. Man can detect different levels of infrared radiation with receptors on the skin, but they are not directional nor are they as sensitive as those of ticks and vipers. -
