Johnson Author: Te Ipukarea Society Te Ipukarea Society, PO Box 649, Rarotonga Cook Islands Funded with the support of: The Ridge to Reef Project through the National Environment Service, funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and facilitated by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Species status report – Kopeka, Atiu Swiftlet (Aerodramus sawtelli) Summary The Atiu swiftlet (Aerodramus sawtelli), known locally as the kopeka, is endemic to the island of Atiu within the Cook Islands and is listed under the IUCN Red List as ‘Vulnerable’ (BirdLife International, 2016; IUCN 2020). Under the Ridge to Reef project (R2R), the Atiu Swiftlet was listed as a key terrestrial species for conservation activities (UNDP Project document, undated). Projects relevant to the kopeka that were initially planned to be implemented under R2R included: support for the kopeka conservation effort; support collaborative work amongst key stakeholders such as National Environment Service (NES), National Heritage Trust (NHT), the Atiu Island Council and Traditional Leaders to create and implement a Species Conservation Plan for this species; and to measure the population at the end of the project to gauge the overall results of the species conservation plan. The R2R baseline figures for the kopeka were recorded at 420 individuals in 2015. Species target goals upon completion of the R2R project were for ‘no net decline in population numbers’. We saw all but a few of the endemic birds we were seeking (and the ones missed are mostly rarely seen), and had good weather throughout, with little rain hampering proceedings for any significant length of time. Among the avian highlights were five pitta species seen, with the Blue-banded, Blue-headed, and Black-and-crimson Pittas in particular putting on fantastic shows for all birders present. The Blue-banded was so spectacular it was an obvious shoe-in for one of the top trip birds of the tour from the moment we walked away. Amazingly, despite absolutely stunning views of a male Blue-headed Pitta showing his shimmering cerulean blue cap and deep purple underside to spectacular effect, he never even got a mention in the final highlights of the tour, which completely baffled me; he simply could not have been seen better, and birds simply cannot look any better! However, to mention only the endemics is to miss the mark, as some of the, other, less local birds create as much of a stir, and can bring with them as much fanfare.

    Does evolution of plumage patterns and of migratory behaviour in Apodini swifts (Aves: Apodiformes) follow distributional range shifts? Dieter Thomas Tietze, Martin Päckert, Michael Wink The Apodini swifts in the Old World serve as an example for a recent radiation on an intercontinental scale on the one hand. On the other hand they provide a model for the interplay of trait and distributional range evolution with speciation, extinction and trait s t transition rates on a low taxonomic level (23 extant taxa). Swifts are well adapted to a life n i mostly in the air and to long-distance movements. Their overall colouration is dull, but r P lighter feather patches of chin and rump stand out as visual signals. Only few Apodini taxa e r breed outside the tropics; they are the only species in the study group that migrate long P distances to wintering grounds in the tropics and subtropics. We reconstructed a dated molecular phylogeny including all species, numerous outgroups and fossil constraints. Several methods were used for historical biogeography and two models for the study of trait evolution. We finally correlated trait expression with geographic status. The differentiation of the Apodini took place in less than 9 Ma. Their ancestral range most likely comprised large parts of the Old-World tropics, although the majority of extant taxa breed in the Afrotropic and the closest relatives occur in the Indomalayan. The expression of all three investigated traits increased speciation rates and the traits were more likely lost than gained. Chin patches are found in almost all species, so that no association with phylogeny or range could be found.

It holds many widespread Asian birds, plus a diverse set of birds that are restricted to the Sunda region (southern Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo), and dozens of its own endemic birds and mammals. For family listing birders, the Bornean Bristlehead, which makes up its own family, and is endemic to the island, is the top target. For most other visitors, Orangutan, the only great ape found in Asia, is the creature that they most want to see. But those two species just hint at the wonders held by this mysterious island, which is rich in bulbuls, babblers, treeshrews, squirrels, kingfishers, hornbills, pittas, and much more. Although there has been rampant environmental destruction on Borneo, mainly due to the creation of oil palm plantations, there are still extensive forested areas left, and the Malaysian state of Sabah, at the northern end of the island, seems to be trying hard to preserve its biological heritage. Ecotourism is a big part of this conservation effort, and Sabah has developed an excellent tourist infrastructure, with comfortable lodges, efficient transport companies, many protected areas, and decent roads and airports. So with good infrastructure, and remarkable biological diversity, including many marquee species like Orangutan, several pittas and a whole Borneo: Bristleheads and Broadbills July 1-16, 2018 range of hornbills, Sabah stands out as one of the most attractive destinations on Earth for a travelling birder or naturalist.

White- throatedSwifts fed their nestlingson bolusesof insectsmore taxonomicallydiverse, on average(over 50 arthropodfamilies represented), than did BlackSwifts (seven arthropodfamilies, primarfiy ants). In some casesWhite-throated Swift boluses containedprimarily one species,while other bolusesshowed more variation.In contrast,all BlackSwift samplescontained high numbersof wingedants with few individualsof other taxa. Our resultsprovide new informationon the White-throated Swift'sdiet and supportprevious studies of the BlackSwift. The food habitsof a numberof speciesof swifts have been recorded(Collins 1968, Hespenheide1975, Lack and Owen 1955, Marfn 1999, Tarburton 1986, 1993), but there is stilllittle informa- tion availablefor others, even for some speciesthat are widespreadand common.Here we providedata on the prey sizeand compositionof food broughtto nestlingsof the White-throated(Aerona u tes saxa talis) and Black (Cypseloidesniger) Swifts in southernCalifornia. The White-throatedSwift is a commonresident that nestswidely in southernCalifornia, while the Black Swift is a local summerresident, migrating south in late August (Garrettand Dunn 1981, Foersterand Collins 1990). METHODS When feedingyoung, swifts of the subfamiliesApodinae and Chaeturinae return to the nest with a bolusof food in their mouths(Collins 1998).

Gesamteindruck Eine unserer schönsten Reisen mit Albatros Tours. Dies ist vor allem Sophoan Sanh zu danken, die die Reise touristisch organisiert und ornithologisch durchgeführt hat. Mit ihrer herzlichen Art hat sie sofort unsere Herzen erobert. Unterbringung und Verpflegung waren sorgfältig ausgewählt, die Tagesabläufe gut geplant. Notwendige Anpassungen an die physischen Möglichkeiten der immerhin älteren Teilnehmer und an die örtlichen Gegebenheiten wurden von Sophoan umsichtig und geräuschlos vorgenommen. Das Essen war sehr gut, ortstypisch, schmackhaft und verträglich. Die Früchte der Saison wurden probiert. Sophoan hat sie immer wieder auf den lokalen Märkten gekauft und herbeigeschleppt. Die abendliche Diskussion der Beobachtungsliste war stets mit der Übergabe der Ziel- Arten für den nächsten Tag verbunden. Wir konnten uns also noch einmal darauf vorbereiten, wonach am nächsten Beobachtungsort Ausschau zu halten war. Sophoan hat in jahrelanger praktischer Tätigkeit ein umfangreiches ornithologisches Wissen und Beobachtungstaktik aufgebaut. Ihre Kenntnisse der Vogelstimmen sind exzellent. Sie bringt eine umfassende Stimmensammlung zum Einsatz, was die Voraussetzung dafür war, dass sich manche Vögel überhaupt zeigten.
