Among the other sounds transliterated here c represents the voiceless palato-alveolar affricate (as sounded in the English church ) and ś the palatal sibilant (as sounded in English sh ow ). The lingual which will be found occurring in Sanskrit words is similar in pronunciation to the palatal . -

Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) Dr. Prabhakar Machwe (1917-1991) Prolific writer, linguist and an authority on Indian literature, Dr. Prabhakar Machwe was born on 26 December 1917 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He graduated from Vikram University, Ujjain and obtained Masters in Philosophy, 1937, and English Literature, 1945, Agra University; Sahitya Ratna and Ph.D, Agra University, 1957. Dr. Machwe started his career as a lecturer in Madhav College, Ujjain, 1938-48. He worked as Literary Producer, All India Radio, Nagpur, Allahabad and New Delhi, 1948-54. He was closely associated with Sahitya Akademi from its inception in 1954 and served as Assistant Secretary, 1954-70, and Secretary, 1970-75. Dr. Machwe was Visiting Professor in Indian Studies Departments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California on a Fulbright and Rockefeller grant (1959-1961); and later Officer on Special Duty (Language) in Union Public Service Commission, 1964-66. After retiring from Sahitya Akademi in 1975, Dr. Machwe was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla, 1976-77, and Director of Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Calcutta, 1979-85. He spent the last years of his life in Indore as Chief Editor of a Hindi daily, Choutha Sansar, 1988-91. Dr. Prabhakar Machwe travelled widely for lecture tours to Germany, Russia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Japan and Thailand. He organised national and international seminars on the occasion of the birth centenaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo between 1961 and 1972. -

FİRDEVS BULUT ÖZET Bu tezde, Bernard de Mandeville’in 1714 yılında kaleme aldığı ve klasik temsili anlatım türünün bir örneği olan Arılar Masalı (The Fable of the Bees) eseri incelenecek, metinde öne çıkan kavramlar ve metnin yazıldığı dönemin özellikleri, temsili anlatım ile bilgi üretimi arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koyması açısından ele alınacaktır. Ortaya koyduğu toplum teorisi ve erken modern Batı toplumu örnekliği ile yazıldığı dönemin ender eserlerinden biri olan Arılar Masalı, bu çalışmada öncelikle döneminin düşünsel birikiminin bir parçası olarak değerlendirilecektir. Daha sonra metnin şu ana kadarki iktisadi ve ahlaki açıklama ve yorumlarının ötesine geçilmeye çalışılarak, edebi bir metin olarak ele alınacaktır. Fabl türü ve temsil getirme metodu ile siyasi ve ahlaki bir toplum teorisi kuran eserin, bir edebiyat ürünü olarak döneminin neresinde bulunduğu açıklanacaktır. -

The upper-caste Christian neophytes, often products of the new western education system, took to Christianity to register socio-political dissent. However, given his/her socio-political location, the Christian convert faced a crisis of entitlement: as a convert they faced immediate ostracising from Hindu conservative society, and even as devout western moderns could not partake in the colonizer’s version of selective Christian brotherhood. I argue that Christian convert literature imaginatively uses Hindu mythology as a master-narrative to partake in both these constituencies. This paper turns to the reception aesthetics of an oft forgotten play by Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the father of modern Bengali poetry, to explore the contentious relationship between Christianity and colonial modernity in nineteenth-century Bengal. In particular, Dutt’s deft use of the semantic excess as a result of the overlapping linguistic constituencies of English and Bengali is examined. Further, the paper argues that Dutt consciously situates his text at the crossroads of different receptive constituencies to create what I call ‘layered homogeneities’. -

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to highlight the origin and growth of Saivism in early Tamil country. Hinduism consists of six systems namely Saivism. Vaishnavism, Ganapathiam , Kaumaram, souram and Saktham1. Saivism refers to the exclusive worship of Siva Saivam means that which has connection with Siva. Saivaites worship Siva as the supreme deity The Hinduism of Tamilagam has incorporate the Pre-Dravidian, Dravidian and Aryan religious beliefs and practices. This process of different racial practices in the sphere of religion had commenced by the Sangam age itself2. Key Words : Saivism, Lord Siva, Bhakti cult, SaivaNayanmars, Linga. Introduction: The Sangam literature contains numerous references to Siva and Thirumal worship3. Siva worship first started into fire worship, and then developed as sound subsequently as idol worship. In Tolkappiam4 in the Sutra beginning with Theivam, unevemamaram, the word Theivam indicates light. The Sangam poet Madurai Kannattanar, indicates that Sivan and Thirumal are the two great gods of ancient time5. Siva is referred as the God seated under the Banyentree6 which implies Siva, as Dakshinamurti seated under the Kallal tree. It has been said that Siva preached the message of the Vedas to the people of the world7. He is believed to have created the Panchabutas. Madurai Kanchi says that Lord with axe is the creator of water earth fire, air and the stars8. -

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1 CHAPTER ONE Introduction 1.0 Background of the study Poor and Hzadeh, (2014) stated that studying the translation of stories and comparing and assessing the similarities and differences of such stories and direct and indirect exchanges of them in earliest age are a part of comparative literature field. Stories in Kalila-wa-Dimna (henceforth KD) are short narrations in which most of the characters are animals and natural agents that are symbols of human and events in them are guides for human being in a way and finally an advice and morals are given directly. Stories in KD express and prove their demands and intentions by using proverbs and myths descended from forefathers orally because they neither can present philosophical reasoning nor understand by hearing. The main source for KD was Bidpay's stories that have been collected after Alexander's attack in 323 BC and certainly it was a representation of viewpoints and the minds of Indian, in its primary form. Then Ibn-e-Moghaffa translated into Arabic and added stories and fables to the original text and called it KD, and it has been presented to Arab world as a unique work.1 Van Ruymbeke, C. (2017), added that the Book of KD holds an iconic place in the history of Arabic translations. Its endurance through many centuries, its adoption in many cultural environments and its complex story of propagation through translations and rewritings receive prominent mentions in works on medieval Arabic and Persian literature. These elements alert us to the book’s importance and point towards the universal pertinence of its contents. -

INDO-ABYAN VERNACULARS (Continued.) By Sir GEORGE GRIERSON, K.C.I.E. CHAPTER II: HISTORICAL 47. We have completed our geographical survey of the Indo- Aryan Vernacular and their dialects. It has been seen that they have been divided into three families, a Midland, an Intermediate, and an Outer. We shall now consider the mutual relationship of these families, and it will be more convenient to consider their growth downwards from the source than to folloAv their course upstream. The treatment must necessarily be historical, but the portion dealing with those stages which preceded that of the Indo-Aryan Vernacular lies outside the frame of the present work, and my account of them will be as brief as is consistent with gaining a clear idea of the whole subject.1 48. The. earliest documents illustrating the language of the Indo-Aryans that we possess are the hj'mns of the Rg Veda. These hymns were composed at widely different times and in widely different localities, some in Arachosia and some in the country near the Jamna, but, owing to their having undergone a process of editing by those that compiled them into their present arrangement, they now show few easily recognizable traces of dialectic differences.2 On the other hand, it is certain that even at that early period " there must have existed a popular language which already differed widely in its phonetic aspect from the literary dialect ",s and that this folk-language varied so 1 It is necessary to explain that this chapter was originally drafted in the year 1898.
