The notes given by Rev. K.C.Narayana on these occasions provide an indepth understanding of the condition on the journey towards infinity. Sri. S.S.Reddy, Sri.V.V.Avadhani along with the staff of Imperience helped us in getting this work done and we thank them for their efforts in making it available at such short notice. We appeal to the abhyasi brethren to make good use of the material by properly understanding the concepts clearly and thus improving the quality of their sadhana. R. Radhakrishnan i ii FOREWORD It was a few months ago, that fortune favoured me with a copy of the second edition of the book ‘Towards Infinity’ published in 1970. It is a small book of about 50 pages. If we look at the book ‘PATH OF GRACE’ that has come out in the year 2006 expounding the various conditions and states, it gives an idea of the amount of research that has been put into it. The title of Bashyakar given to Sri Ramanuja for his expounding of the system of SriVaishnavism, is equally applicable to Sri. Rev. K.C.Narayana who has expounded the system of Rev.SriRamchandraji Maharaj of Shahjahanpur, U.P., India. If the Path of Grace gave us an idea as to the conditions experienced in the path, the satyapada sopanamu is a more detailed insight into these conditions and has a certain amount of granularity giving us more detail so as to understand the conditions better. If the conditions given in the book and in the tables of the appendix are to be understood more thoroughly, these notes have to be read and imbibed. iii The book has notes on 143 cells. Of these, notes till 110 give us insights into the various psychological conditions from the 1st to 5th knots. The notes from 111 to 143 deal with the conditions of Brahmand, Para Brahmand, Prapanna, Prapanna Prabhu and higher. It becomes very clear that there are various progressions and regressions in the path and it is the gurukrupa alone that keeps one steady on the path. It is a ‘Path of Grace’ is what needs to be understood. Even as early as the stage of cell 15, it becomes invariably necessary for the gurukrupa which takes us along afterwards. That is reason why Rev. SriRamchandraji Maharaj tells us that most people have not moved beyond that stage. There is a saying ‘the higher you go, the steeper you fall’. As such, one’s dependence on the gurukrupa to keep steady on the path is of even more importance, since the mistakes done at higher stages are dealt with more severely. In the letter dated 22-10-1979 to Sri. K.C.Narayana, the Master wrote “You know Narayana that I have done whatever the need was for the spiritual life of man and the work is still continued. The system is there, my iv support is there, yet it is for the persons like you to first educate abhyasis and then do further research. I have great hope from you.” Towards this blessing of the Master, Sri. K.C.Narayana has been putting all his efforts relentlessly and the results are very clearly visible to us. During the discussions of the game of life, Sri. K.C.Narayana has expressed that this work is a work in progress and that it should not stop like the traditional paramapada sopana patamu. It is hoped that aspirants take his words seriously and start girding up their loins to assist him towards the goal of the Master. In the service of the Master K.C.Srihari v 1. / (Uragamu) సరప్ము ఉరగము This stage of serpent is universal in the development of Consciousness. Majority of us would like to swallow something and coil into a corner yielding to indolence. From this stage, the wise man moves on, hoping for something better than food and sleep, the basic needs and drives. No wonder, the saints have called this, an age of Kabandas. In KUNDALINI YOGA Mooladhara is the seat where the serpent is coiled. It has to move from this plane to higher levels. Kabanda means whatever we find, put it in the mouth. As a matter of fact that is a trait of every child. For a new born baby, whatever you give will be kept in the mouth by it. Possessiveness is an inherent characteristic of a jeeva. That is the problem here, we need to come out of it. That is why it is very difficult to get out of it. Once possessiveness is developed – it might be money,people, house or anything, we do not leave it. Give a chocolate to children and see what happens when you ask for it back. Even if you say, “I only gave it, give it 1 back” they will not give it. That is what we mean by possessiveness here. Actually the temperament of serpent is, after it acquires a thing even if it is of no use to it, it does not leave it.

I bow to Govinda, whose nature is Bliss Supreme, who is the Sadguru, who can be known only from the import of all Vedanta, and who is beyond the reach of speech and mind. 2. For all beings a human birth is difficult to obtain, more so is a male body; rarer than that is Brahmanahood; rarer still is the attachment to the path of Vedic religion; higher than this is erudition in the scriptures; discrimination between the Self and not-Self, Realisation, and continuing in a state of identity with Brahman – these come next in order. (This kind of) Mukti (Liberation) is not to be attained except through the well- earned merits of a hundred crore of births. 3. These are three things which are rare indeed and are due to the grace of God – namely, a human birth, the longing for Liberation, and the protecting care of a perfected sage. 4. The man who, having by some means obtained a human birth, with a male body and mastery of the Vedas to boot, is foolish enough not to exert himself for self-liberation, verily commits suicide, for he kills himself by clinging to things unreal. 5. What greater fool is there than the man who having obtained a rare human body, and a masculine body too, neglects to achieve the real end of this life ? 6. Let people quote the Scriptures and sacrifice to the gods, let them perform rituals and worship the deities, but there is no Liberation without the realisation of one’s identity with the Atman, no, not even in the lifetime of a hundred Brahmas put together.

    Satsanga with Sri Swami Viditatmananda Saraswati Arsha Vidya Gurukulam UPARATI, THE ABIDANCE OF THE MIND AND SENSE ORGANS, OR TOTAL RENUNCIATION िनविततानामतषार् े े ं तितिरिवषये उपरमणमपरितरथवाु िविहताना ं कमणार् ं िविधना पिरागः॥ nivartitānāmeteṣāṁ tadvyatiriktaviṣayebhya uparamaṇamuparatirathavā vihitānāṁ karmaṇāṁ vidhinā parityāgaḥ [Vedāntasāra, 21]. Uparati is the cessation of these external organs so restrained, from the pursuit of objects other than that, or it may mean the abandonment of the prescribed works according to scriptural injunctions. The mind and sense organs, which have been thus restrained so that they remain focused and do not get distracted, is called uparati. The difference is subtle and should be understood. Śama is the mastery of the mind and bringing it back from its distractions. Dama is the restraint of the sense organs and bringing them back from their distractions and focusing them. Uparama is the faculty by which the mind is focused where it wants to focus, namely, on śravaṇam, mananam, and nidhidhyāsanam, and that by which the sense organs are also disciplined so that they aid, rather than distract from the focus. Therefore, while śama is the discipline by which the mind is brought back from where it strays and dama is the control by which the sense organs that are distracted are brought back, uparati is the faculty that enables the mind and sense organs that are thus restrained to stay focused. As a result of the practice of śama and dama, we find that the mind and the sense organs slowly become abiding.

    JNANA YOGA The yoga of knowledge or wisdom. Jñāna yoga is "knowledge of the absolute" (Brahman). This is the most difficult path, requiring tremendous strength of will and intellect. Taking the philosophy of Vedanta the Jnana Yogi uses his mind to inquire into his own nature. Here aspirant seeks the ultimate truth using keen investigation and fearless inquiries and arrives at doubtless stage of realization. He questions until he sees. Once you conquer the mind, the same pure mind becomes an instrument of realization. The Prakriti or Nature has 8 components: Ether, Air, Fire, Earth, Water (5 elements of Gross Body) and Mind, Intellect, Ego (3 elements of subtle body). Mind feels, Intellect discriminates and Ego identifies. Bhagavad Gītā says: ‘Verily, there is no purifier (pavitra) in this world equal to Divine Wisdom” and faithful (sharaddhavan) becomes knowledgeable. The Jnana Yogi aspirant tries to develop four spiritual capacities or abilities (sādhana catustaya): 1) ability to discriminate (viveka) between the spiritual and material, between the real and the unreal; between transitory and permanent 2) the renunciation (vairāgya) from worldly desires; 3) mind control(śamā), sense-control (dama), cessation of activity of mind (uparati), perseverance (titiksā), mental resolve or intentness of mind (samādhāna), and faith (śraddhā; 4) a positive longing for wisdom and freedom (mumukshutva). Broadly, jñāna-yoga entails the study of Vedāntic texts, sustained reflection upon the philosophical principles of Advaita and ‘constant meditation’ (nididhyāsana). Three things are Durlabha (hard to get). 1. Manushayatva (life as human being), 2. Mumukshutava: burning desire to attain self-realization and 3. Sadhu Purush Samshraya.

    SPIRITUAL THEOLOGY IN INDIAN THOUGHT GREGORY D’SOUZA 1.0 Introduction Indian society is an inter-religious multicultural pluralistic society, where almost all the world religions are lived and pro­ fessed. According to the census of 1991, of the total 812.3 mil­ lions of Indian population about 82.4 % are Hindus, 11.7 % Muslims, 2.3 % Christians, 2% Sikhs, .8% Buddhists, .4% Jains and .4% people of other religions and those who do not profess any religion.1 Today, however, Indian population is about one billion. All these religions have their own Spiritual Theology, which differs from each other, in doctrine, tradition and practice even essentially. When we speak of Indian Spiritual Theology, we have to take into account the Indian reality and specially the diversity of these religions. In this given context however, with the limited time and space allotted to this paper, it is practically impossible to deal with the Spiritual Theologies of all religions and all the aspects of Indian reality. I will be concentrating mainly on Hindu Spiritual Theology as an existential context for our spirituality. Indian civilization is one of the most ancient civilizations in the world, and Hindu Spiritual Theology is essentially based on Hindu scriptures, the Vedas and especially the Upanishads. Besides, there are also other scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita, the Epics and the Puranas, the Scriptures of aivism and Vainavism. Though some of these scriptures, especially the Upanishads are accepted by all, there is a lot of difference in their interpretation. This has given origin to different schools of thought (darsanas).

    Chapter 1: Anubandha Chatushtaya Question 1: What is meant by anubandh-chatushtaya? Answer: The four things, after knowing which, one gets inspired to study a shastra is known as anubandh- chatushtaya. It is mentioned at the start of the shastra. It consists of four things:- Vishaya: It means the subject matter with which the text deals. This work has the vishaya of jiva, jagat and Brahman. Prayojana: The benefit derived from study of a shastra is referred as the prayojana of that shastra. Generally there are four motives of human beings – dharma, artha, kama and moksha. o By kama is meant the desire of attainment of physical or mental pleasure either here or hereafter (=after death) and it includes the desire of removal of all sorrows and sufferings. o By artha is meant the means by which object of kama can be achieved. o By dharma is meant the laws which govern the attainment of pleasure. The mundane pleasure is relative to space, time and person. It is also temporary and impure. Its temporality depends upon the purity of effort and means. Since everyone is after pleasure, they put effort for permanent happiness. Dharma prescribes the rules by which the pleasure can be attained. However, this too does not guarantee everlasting happiness. o By Moksha is meant the bliss which is absolute (not relative), eternal, unblemished and unparalleled. The vidya which is required for Moksha is called para vidya. The vidya which is required for attainment of kama in this world and after death is referred by apara vidya. This apara vidya is mentioned in karma and upasana portions of Vedas.
