Gann, Executive Director Submitted to CarolAnn Sharkey Key West Botanical Garden 5210 College Road Key West, Florida 33040 and Kate Marks Heritage Preservation 1012 14th Street, NW, Suite 1200 Washington DC 20005 Introduction The Key West Botanical Garden (KWBG) is located at 5210 College Road on Stock Island, Monroe County, Florida. It is a 7.5 acre conservation area, owned by the City of Key West. The KWBG requested that The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) conduct a floristic evaluation of its natural areas and grounds and to provide recommendations. Study Design On August 9-10, 2005 an inventory of all vascular plants was conducted at the KWBG. All areas of the KWBG were visited, including the newly acquired property to the south. Special attention was paid toward the remnant natural habitats. A preliminary plant list was established. Plant taxonomy generally follows Wunderlin (1998) and Bailey et al. (1976). Results Five distinct habitats were recorded for the KWBG. Two of which are human altered and are artificial being classified as developed upland and modified wetland. In addition, three natural habitats are found at the KWBG. They are coastal berm (here termed buttonwood hammock), rockland hammock, and tidal swamp habitats. Developed and Modified Habitats Garden and Developed Upland Areas The developed upland portions include the maintained garden areas as well as the cleared parking areas, building edges, and paths. -

Orzell Avon Park Air Force Range, 29 South Blvd., Avon Park Air Force Range, FL 33825-5700 [email protected] Edwin Bridges Botanical and Ecological Consultant, 7752 Holly Tree Place, NW, Bremerton, WA 98312-1063 [email protected] ABSTRACT Fire-maintained, species-rich, seasonally wet subtropical grasslands dominated by muhly grass (Mu- hlenbergia sericea ), here referred to as calcareous wet prairies, occur on mineral soils between pine- lands (or Florida dry prairies) and herbaceous wetlands. Southern Florida calcareous prairies/pinelands are described based upon species composition, species richness, niche or habitat breadth, taxonomic uniqueness, and geographic area. This study differentiated three calcareous prairie/pineland regions, central, south-central, and south Florida. A south-central Florida community type occurs sporadically from Polk County south to Okeechobee, Hendry, and Sarasota counties, in an otherwise acidic prairie/ pineland landscape. Quantitative sampling using nested and non-nested modules in Polk and Okeechobee counties was utilized to determine fine-scale species richness values. Results indicate that these prairies have among the highest fine-scale vascular plant species richness values recorded in North America, up to 27 species in 0.1 m2, 49 species in 1 m2, and 171 species in 1000 m2. Floristic lists compiled from 43 sites in 14 southern Florida counties demonstrate that many sites have biodiversity significance with over 100 species. Several have 140-180 species recorded from single-event visits. The community species pool consists of 412 taxa from south-central Florida calcareous prairies alone with 548 taxa when south Florida calcareous pineland/prairies are included. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT Field studies at the Lawther - Deer Park Prairie Preserve, an area of approximately 21 ha (51 acres) of the Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes vegetation area, have resulted in a description of the vegetation associations and an annotated checklist of the vascular flora. Six plant com- munity associations occur on the property: (1) the Upper Texas Coast Ingleside Sandy Wet Prairie; (2) Eastern Gamagrass - Switchgrass - Yellow Indiangrass Herbaceous Vegetation; (3) Gulf Cordgrass Herbaceous Vegetation; (4) Texas Gulf Coast Live Oak - Sugarberry Forest; (5) Little Bluestem - Slender Bluestem - Big Bluestem Herbaceous Vegetation, and (6) Natural Depressional Ponds. The checklist includes 407 species belonging to 247 genera and 86 families. Forty-six species are non-native. The best-represented families (with species number following) are Poaceae (84), Asteraceae (68), Cyperaceae (33), and Fabaceae (19). West Gulf Coastal Plain (eastern Texas and western Louisiana) endemics include Helenium drummondii, Liatris acidota, Oenothera lindheimeri, and Rudbeckia texana. One Texas endemic, Chloris texensis, a Species of Greater Conservation Need, is present. -

The pathfinders were designed by students in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Texas at Austin in response to specific requests by educators in reservation schools. The pathfinders are bibliographic instructional aids that outline methods to locate information on topics of interest to a particular client. Each pathfinder includes an introduction that describes the nature of the topic, scope of the pathfinder, assessment of client needs, and steps taken in identifying and evaluating relevant resources; an annotated bibliography of 15-25 resources, including print reference works, monographs, indexes, journal titles, electronic resources, and organizations; and the pathfinder proper, a guide to locating resources on the topic. The pathfinders are: (1) "Cahokia Mounds: A Pathfinder for High School Students" (Timothy Bullard); (2) "The Native American Boarding School Experience" (Lisa Bier); (3) "The Native American Boarding School Experience: Resources on the Internet. -

Host Range Testing of Tetramesa Romana and Rhizaspidiotus Donacis
The host ranges of Tetramesa romana and Rhizaspidiotus donacis, potential control agents for giant reed, Arundo donax. Introduction Arundo donax, or giant reed, is a tall, woody grass that has been proposed as a target for biological control in New Zealand. It originates from Eurasia, but has become a serious environmental weed in many southern hemisphere countries and in North America. Although still of limited distribution in New Zealand, it is consider to be a serious future threat to wetlands, riparian areas and other habitats. Two control agents have been selected for introduction to New Zealand 1. Arundo wasp, Tetramesa romana Walker (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) 2. Arundo scale, Rhizaspidiotus donacis (Leonardi) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) Arundo wasp lays its eggs into the shoots of giant reed, inducing a gall. Larvae feed within the shoot gall. Growth can be severely stunted and with sufficient attack stems can die. Like pest scales of pot plants and fruit trees, arundo scale extracts the products of photosynthesis from the phloem of giant reed rhizomes, reducing the productivity and growth rate of plants. The New Zealand initiative can draw heavily on a biological control programme against giant reed that has been underway in USA and Mexico for over ten years. -
