COMPARISON OF SWAMP FOREST AND PHRAGMITES AUSTRALIS COMMUNITIES AT MENTOR MARSH, MENTOR, OHIO A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Master of Science in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Jenica Poznik, B. S. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Master's Examination Committee: Approved by Dr. Craig Davis, Advisor Dr. Peter Curtis Dr. Jeffery Reutter School of Natural Resources ABSTRACT Two intermixed plant communities within a single wetland were studied. The plant community of Mentor Marsh changed over a period of years beginning in the late 1950’s from an ash-elm-maple swamp forest to a wetland dominated by Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel. Causes cited for the dieback of the forest include salt intrusion from a salt fill near the marsh, influence of nutrient runoff from the upland community, and initially higher water levels in the marsh. The area studied contains a mixture of swamp forest and P. australis-dominated communities. Canopy cover was examined as a factor limiting the dominance of P. australis within the marsh. It was found that canopy openness below 7% posed a limitation to the dominance of P. australis where a continuous tree canopy was present. P. australis was also shown to reduce diversity at sites were it dominated, and canopy openness did not fully explain this reduction in diversity. Canopy cover, disturbance history, and other environmental factors play a role in the community composition and diversity. Possible factors to consider in restoring the marsh are discussed. Frank, Botanist, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry INTRODUCTION: The perennial, emergent aquatic plant, Nymphoides cristata (Roxb.) Kuntze (Menyanthaceae), has been added to the Florida Noxious Weed and Invasive Species List. This plant was proposed for listing and evidence was presented to the Noxious Weed Review Committee. Numerous ecological studies and weed assessments by the USDA and the University of Florida provided information. Invasive plant managers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and South Florida Water Management District are currently trying to control the spread of this plant. Crested floating heart is an aggressive pest plant that develops dense mats and quickly covers lakes and ponds.This species is documented as naturalized in eight counties in Florida and is also listed by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council as an invasive species that has altered natural plant communities. The committee found that the species exhibited the following invasive characteristics: • vegetative reproduction from plant fragments, bulbils and tubers • rapid colonization of fresh water bodies • persistent roots, rhizomes and leaf fragments make control extremely difficult • easily spread by boat traffic Mats of N. cristata reduce or eliminate the light required by native plant species below the water surface, and thereby eliminate these plants from the water column. -

Chapter 17: Archeological and Historic Resources Everglades National Park was created primarily because of its unique flora and fauna. In the 1920s and 1930s there was some limited understanding that the park might contain significant prehistoric archeological resources, but the area had not been comprehensively surveyed. After establishment, the park’s first superintendent and the NPS regional archeologist were surprised at the number and potential importance of archeological sites. NPS investigations of the park’s archeological resources began in 1949. They continued off and on until a more comprehensive three-year survey was conducted by the NPS Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC) in the early 1980s. The park had few structures from the historic period in 1947, and none was considered of any historical significance. Although the NPS recognized the importance of the work of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs in establishing and maintaining Royal Palm State Park, it saw no reason to preserve any physical reminders of that work. Archeological Investigations in Everglades National Park The archeological riches of the Ten Thousand Islands area were hinted at by Ber- nard Romans, a British engineer who surveyed the Florida coast in the 1770s. Romans noted: [W]e meet with innumerable small islands and several fresh streams: the land in general is drowned mangrove swamp. On the banks of these streams we meet with some hills of rich soil, and on every one of those the evident marks of their having formerly been cultivated by the savages.812 Little additional information on sites of aboriginal occupation was available until the late nineteenth century when South Florida became more accessible and better known to outsiders. -

A Herpetofaunal Survey of the Santee National Wildlife Refuge Submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service October 5, 2012 Prepared by: Stephen H. Bennett Wade Kalinowsky South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Introduction The lack of baseline inventory data of herpetofauna on the Santee National Wildlife Refuge, in general and the Dingle Pond Unit specifically has proven problematic in trying to assess priority species of concern and direct overall management needs in this system. Dingle Pond is a Carolina Bay which potentially provides unique habitat for many priority reptiles and amphibians including the federally threatened flatwoods salamander, the state endangered gopher frog, state threatened dwarf siren and spotted turtle and several species of conservation concern including the tiger salamander, upland chorus frog (coastal plain populations only), northern cricket frog (coastal plain populations only), many-lined salamander, glossy crayfish snake and black swamp snake. The presence or abundance of these and other priority species in this large Carolina Bay is not known. This project will provide for funds for South Carolina DNR to conduct baseline surveys to census and assess the status of the herpetofauna in and adjacent to the Dingle Pond Carolina Bay. Surveys will involve a variety of sampling techniques including funnel traps, hoop traps, cover boards, netting and call count surveys to identify herpetofauna diversity and abundance. Herpetofauna are particularly vulnerable to habitat changes including climate change and human development activities. Many unique species are endemic to Carolina Bays, a priority habitat that has been greatly diminished across the coastal plain of South Carolina. These species can serve as indicator species of habitat quality and climate changes and baseline data is critical at both the local and regional level. -

United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service Technical Note No: TX-PM-20-02 July 2020 A Guide on Common, Herbaceous, Hydrophytic Vegetation of Southern Texas Plant Materials Technical Note Horsetail Background: Wetlands are those lands that have saturated soils, shallow standing water or flooding during at least a portion of the growing season. These sites have soils that are saturated for at least two consecutive weeks during the growing season and support a distinct vegetation type adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this Technical Note is to provide information on the use of some common wetland plants of southern Texas. The list includes plants found along the Guadalupe River around Tivoli southward to the Rio Grande River floodplain. It is not intended to be a comprehensive treatment of the wetland flora of this region. Rather it is intended to introduce to the reader the many common wetland plant species that occur in south Texas. The guide is broken down into four categories: wildlife habitat, shoreline erosion control, water quality improvement and landscaping. Each species has a brief description of its identifying features, notes on its ecology or habitat, use and its National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) assessment. For more detailed information we suggest referring to our listed references. All pictures came from the USDA Plants Data Base or the E. “Kika” de la Garza Plant Materials Center. Plants for wildlife habitat: The plants listed in this section are primarily for waterbird and waterfowl habitat as well as for fish nursery and spawning areas. -
